The content that a cheapo like me needs!! I definitely have all my paintings stacked up on the floor and it stagnates creativity at times. I love the frame idea! I’ve used stretcher bars from canvases I’ve torn but I like this mounding idea much more and the sanding the staple idea is genius! Lots of positivity for you❤️ Edit: I just remembered in an art class one of my classmates got a dupe for that expensive glass masterson palette at Home Depot for super cheap and had it coated so it was a bit shatterproof. She just bought some glass and had the employees at Home Depot cut it to size.
These are amazing as an art teacher!!!!! The MDF hack is genius! I already have a jigsaw could do this for my art club at school and do a super cheap display or sell pieces for a fundraiser!!! Thank you for sharing!
I love home depot and Lowes! I thought about the mdf idea but I don't have the proper equipment to cut them up. My art hack: Sometimes I use their clearance house paint that has primer and a color they messed up for a gesso substitute. I'm using a pretty light beigy color at the moment and the small can I bought has lasted me forever. :)
Razpop OH MY GOSH I LOVE THAT IDEA!!! I’m definitely going to have to try that bargain bin paint idea! Also I think if you ask an employee at Home Depot (if you can find one since it’s notoriously hard to get help and Home Depot) I think they will cut mdf board into small chunks for you. Obviously you won’t be able to pick the sizes specifically and they might not be super straight, but I’ve known people who have done that before!
I would love to see you do a painting with the inspiration of the northern lights I love watching you paint and your tips and tricks much love to your art work it’s beautiful
@@EmilyMackeyArt I would love to see some frames, too. Maybe soon you 2 will get some time to make a vid for us! I'm totally going to get some of that molding! I'm so glad I found your channel. I'm learning so much from you. Who knew I could learn so much from a young lady who's the same age as my youngest son? Lord I'm old. But I feel like the same person I was when I was your age...well...mentally anyway lol😁🎨
Girl, you are so adorable! I love your energy and playfulness. I'm just throwing myself into the art world, too, but you are light years ahead of me! I'm 57 years old, and completely in my own head about showing the world my "private" art. I'll be posting things on IG as soon as I can get it looking professional. You are a breath of fresh air! Keep doing what you are doing!
I just came across your channel I felt in love with you at the first sight, haha. Thanks for you tips. Hoping you share more tips to clear space and earn back some money from the paintings on your next videos which would help the poor painting artists so so much.
OMG YOUR ARE MY SAVIOR!!!! I'm just starting out and trying to sell my artwork. This is going to save me so much money. Plus the ones I do want to keep will be nicely displayed in my home. Thanks so much for sharing this with us!
“I give it to my Fiancée and she cuts it up!” I died when you said this. It’s so nice to hear that 😊 I uwu’d. I love hearing girls say “My girlfriend” and I love hearing guys say “My boyfriend” it’s so cute I love it
Although I am not a painter, I absolutely love your videos! You are so real. I am going to use the picture shelf thingy and your framing idea. Love the picture! Again, thank you!
If you wanted darker wood shelves you could also just get wood staining stuff. And if you wanted a different color all together, paint them 👀 I’m definitely going to look into the board though. I live in an apartment so I can’t cut it but I can get my dad to cut it when I come to visit. I’ve been wanting to try board and seeing that it’s cheaper is making me want to go to Home Depot rn 👀👀
That painting is awesome! I've seen a couple of your beginner tutorials & of course I could see you were quite talented. But was really stunned at just how talented. Beautiful! I thought it was a photo until you mentioned you painted it!
On framing I thought the same. I go for more decorative moulding option and then tend to paint the frame as well to get it looking as regal as possible.
Emily you have such a beautiful personality. Keep up the great work you all are doing, you make an awesome team. All the way from Trinidad and Tobago. 🥰
Love the tips 🙏 Having made a few frames myself, I'd like to let others know that it can be a little finicky. For the whole frame to actually line up and look good, there's quite some precision to it, meaning that the length of the sides and the accuracy of the 45 angles totally determines whether the finished frame looks straight or not or if gaps will exist. So if you don't get it exactly as you want it to begin with, have that in mind and see if this is the case 😊
So so true! When my fiancee made these for me she definitely had her fair share of frames giving her a hard time because the angles were just a little bit off. Precision is key!
This is only the second video of yours I've seen and I already very much enjoy you and your content! Thanks for your informative and genuinely helpful content!
You,re home depo art hacks realy work. I don,t live in the Amerika. I live in the netherlands and we have a big hardware store in another city its called hoornbach. I belive its a a norway company. Its a asome hardware store. OMG they have everything what i need for painting its amazing. Thank you so so mutch for you,re home depo art hacks its saves me so mutch money 😄👩🎨🎨👍🏽👋🏾
These tips were super helpful! I have trouble buying frames because they do cost a lot and I feel like that money can go to more art supplies that I need, so thank you ☺️
I totally agree! I also find a lot of frames super ornate and bulky when what I’m really looking for is something simple and minimalist so the molding frames work perfect for me.
Wow! Love all your tips! Thank you! I have to say this is my first time on your channel and when you held up the little picture in the frame you made out of wood molding and said it was a painting you did...... I swear to God I thought it was a photograph! Wow! You are super duper talented! I don't paint I actually landed on your RU-vid channel because I was searching for cool DIY hacks for craft room organization...lol So you seriously blew my mind with that little painting! And all the ocean waves behind you too that you painted is just so pretty! How cool that you and your wife are both creative ppl! How fun! Thanks again for sharing your tips! They were really useful! *Of course I subscribed and liked.... Because you are A-Mazing!
Wow you thats amazing. Wow i am gonna run to my local hard were store. I don,t live in Amerika so i can,t say i,ll go to home depo? Did i wrote it correctly? But these art hacks are amazing. You are saving me so mutch euro,s. I can,t say dollars cause i am not living in Amerika. Keep on making these video,s i love them and you save me money😁👍🏼 i hope you and you,re fiance have a great day greetings from the Netherlands
Paint or stain the hacked moulding shelves to your liking (or to match the in-store $30 shelf you love) - then you have a $3.50 (+ minimal paint/stain $) that ISN’T “minimalist” or “cheap” looking! Simple. GREAT VID - I have a LOWE’s gift card burning a hole in my wallet... Heading there today to get the MDF BOARD to shock my daughter with 37 panels to paint on for only $7!! THANKS!!!
Again U r awesome! Thank you so much. When my brother comes home(hes a long haul trucker)..i am sending him to home depot for me! Iwill b posting on IG the things i do from that and will tag u 💜😊
Howdy, have you thought about painting the whole board with gesso before your fiancé cuts it? I was thinking if you got the first layer or two of gesso it would be much faster to paint the whole thing. Then if there are any gesso imperfections or corrections needed, you could add one or two more gesso coats on the individual pieces. Maybe you could talk her into doing the first coat or two with a small paint roller. :) Just a thought. (I'm also curious if you think it's a bad idea and why.)
Hello Emily Macky Art. I think i am gonna turn my parents attic into my own painting studio. Its big enough and they don,t do anything whit it ecept hanging up the laundry. I realy can use the space. I wanna be better at painting. I,ve tryed every single painting medium out there and every time i come back to acrylic paint from liquitex basics. I love you,re home depo hacks and all you,re paintings👋🏾👍🏽🎨👩🎨🥰
Hi. Love your tips and voice! I plan to paint my board with chalk paint. Do you suggest gesso to prep it or traditional primer? Also, I saw a video about miter shears (clippers) that cut on an angle to make frames. I think this would be an option to test for followers that don’t know how to use power tools.
When I was in college we used masonite board to paint it was cheap but everyone was sanding them down because they put a smooth finish on it before they would paint it (because the paint would slip on the surface) I would do none of that. I would just use the board on the unfinished saide because it had a texture that looked a LOT like canvas and I would do a base of white or black material then do my painting on it and I would still retain that texture. I have tried to find those boards again but I have a hard time finding them. A quick research and it seems they call them Fibrex now it comes in 1/4 inch 48-inch X96-inch Standard Hardboard I will have to check at home depot to see if the back is still textured but that was a fave of mine and cheap yeah so a panel of 4 by 8 feet think about it! I know Home depot will cut stuff up for free. Some ask for a fee but even then it's WAAAAAY cheaper than buying it. It's 16$ Canadian so US money should be a lot cheaper...
You're not going to believe this but I showed the wood panel to my husband and he works at a company that uses wood all day long. He said he can get this from the scrap pile ALL DAY LONG!!! Hopefully since I am a beginner I will be able to paint on this smooth texture. I've only painted about a handful of times but now I'm used to the texture of a gessoed canvas. Plus I usually do the wet on wet technique but who cares! I will make myself get used to it!
@@EmilyMackeyArt yes I am and that is so unlike the norm for me lol. He asked me what sizes I wanted. So I told him 11 by 14, eight-by-ten, 5 by 7, 4 by 6 and maybe some random sizes thrown in there. So he told second shift to cut 10 pieces each!!!! 😲 I can't believe it! I hope I enjoy painting on them. How do you like painting on them in comparison to stretched canvases? If both were free which one would you choose?
Hey just a question about Gesso, have you found a cheaper product that can work as good for the panels that you paint on? In a different video, I saw that wood or white craft glue can be used when mixed with a bit of water, but I’ve not tried it yet & I think they we’re using it for a different reason and on a different material, so I thought I’d just ask? Also have you used poster paints for your panel boards?
HI I would like to ask and clarify that you just sand paper the side of the board? or also the painted once as well? and what kind/quality of sand paper you use? I believe their is number on it. Shout out and I am your new subscriber here in the Philippines :)
My favorite thing is how you say. "It goes on floors and things to cover things". You don't even have to know the specifics of all this to enjoy and utilize this supplies. Don't be offended please lol it's what makes you creative. Not every artist had a hobby lobby or art store to utilize in order to be called a real artist.
Totally trying the MDM board when I run out of canvases that I just stocked up on! Fabulous idea, thank you! Mama of three young littlss here so I am always looking to save! Have you come across any other Home Depot hacks or savings hacks that you could share please? ☺️
I am about to try a triptych acrilyc pour with three of those home depot boards (2x4 feet)i cant say i don't know what im doing but its also probably a little early for me to attempt something like this.either way its go time in twenty four hours, just waiting on the iridescant gold to show up.any tips?
this is a old video and probably no one will see this. but a art tip/art hack i saw from art prof, was to do the art in common classic sizes and then a custom frame isnt needed. like 9 by 15. instead like something random like 7 by 13 1/2. if anyone likes that size sorry. D:
I haven't worked with water color much but I want to get more into it! BUT you might want to check out my friend Noelle Curtis' youtube channel! she does incredible water color walk throughs that are just mind blowing. look her up!
What are the instructions for putting the canvas in the frame? And, would these be for a canvas panel or a regular pre-primed canvas (not a panel)? Thank you.
Hi! Most of my paintings will friction fit into my frames put if your panel or canvas is a little loose, you can use a dab of wood glue to keep it in place.
Can you and your fiancé come up with a shelf like this one that has a lip or edge on the front so things don’t slide off? Ps love this video and thank you for your time 💕
Not sure if this would be useful or not - but could you just run a bead of clear silicone a cm from the outside edge to create the lip and prevent the paintings from sliding off?
