We put different LED lights to the test to find out if you get what you pay for. We also talk about CRI ratings, and tell you what they can and can't tell you about the quality of an LED light. by the end of this video you will know what is CRI.

It's amazing how much the prices have changed over the years
@digitalghosts4599

These prices are downright insane. I was so mad with them that I built my own photo lights with Meanwell power supplies, Bridgelux COB modules which are 10 000 lm and 90CRI each and aftermarket AMD radiators. The results are very comparable with the CRI 97 light and the price is $80 per light, not $2,630 - what the hell?! for 30 times cheaper, it is really worth doing it myself.

No mention here of what white balance technique was used, and neither the white nor grey subjects in the clips have been matched together in post, so the whole test is not particularly useful. I don't understand why the actual lights aren't shown either.

Since colors register as normal under tungsten light it is obvious that the camera is set to tungsten. AWB would completely negate the purpose of the test; as would rebalancing in post.

At 1:18 I think there was some issue filtering the light source on the CRI 98 which totally mess the accuracy of a 98 CRI.

How times have changed... 90+ CRI LEDs (5-6k temp up to 750 lumens) are $20 for 4-6 lights. This is why early adopters pay so much more.

@Effeegee
@Effeegee 8 лет назад
CRI cannot be used in isolation as demonstrated by having a CRI of 98 with a colour temperature of 3200K. To be useful colour rendering measurement needs illumination in daylight temperature range. A warm tungsten is not good enough to render all the sample colours used to measure CRI but because it 'appears' to render them well with a low colour temperature. It's an illusion. CRI is interdependent with the colour temperature of the light source and even LED lights which (can) have a high CRI (>90) and a CCT of >5000K do not render the definitive sample colours well. The holy grail high CRI and good CCT without serious troughs in the power spectrum remains the holy grail.
@lordofthebeltsthereturnoft1127
Very good video but just remember the "true colors" don't really exist. It's all relative to the light source. The CRI rather is comparing the lights to the colors reproduced by daylight. I am sure you knew this though but just made the video more straight forward.

Lord of the belts: The return of the KING Well our eyes are adjusted to recognize things in daylight every day so I’d say true color is what it looks like in daylight for the purposes of artificial light. Personally I find blue and green lights very annoying and notice them easily, I’ve always disliked leds cause of it but just recently found out about cri and it’s definitely measuring what I like in a flashlight or a bulb. Lately the market seems to be super lumens and lots of blue to get the most light, results in a harsh straining light that hides details and it’s annoying. I still prefer my Mini Maglite although it’s a little too red and a the beam is scattered or blotchy I don’t think I can replace it for less than $30 and be satisfied with the beam. I’m going to try though, I’m looking out for a Nichia 219 flashlight that’s cheap and well made, so far that’s what I’ve found to most likely produce sunlight like light from led. Anyways enough rambling, I think true color is sunlight because that’s what we’ve evolved with, that’s what we see every day and that’s the main light source of our lives, everything’s relative and this is no different but it would be hard to try and claim another light would be the source of true color rather than the sun.

CRI tries to quantify how correct colors look to Human eyes. Video cameras have different red green and blue responses, and do a little hocus-pocus color matrix math to make things closer to matching human expectations. CRI doesn't mean much to a camera. But I suppose there are specialized alternative measures. As a color expert, I suppose I should go find out... nah, too lazy.

You literally called a $1,000 light cheap...you clearly don't understand how simple and inexpensive lights are to manufacture. Yes, even high quality lights are not really that expensive to make on a large scale. You can easily get a light setup for $400 or less with a CRI over 95. There are 1,000 lumen bulbs for $20 each that have a 95+ CRI rating. Get 7 of those, for $140 plus a 7 socket soft box and you're far under $400 with a very high CRI. It wouldn't be very bright by itself and you'd need more lights but still, you're talking about one light here. Oh and I almost forgot; those bulbs that are $20 each, and SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper than the $1,000 LED light that you used with an unknown CRI, EVEN THEY are severely overpriced. They shouldn't cost more than $10 each. So again, lights are not expensive to make. I don't understand why people think these crazy prices are justifiable...
@videomaker

historically lighting for film and video has been expensive. Shoot an Arri with a high TLCI rating next to the DIY set up you are describing and the difference will be very apparent. It's much more nuanced than you would hope for the price difference, however, if you capture an image with poor quality lights, there is nothing to be done to make it look better in post. in the world of video lights, $1,000 light is cheap, considering the range for a 1x1 LED panel is $30 to $6k on B & H right now. typically the difference is in the quality control of each LED in the light and how many bells and whistles it has. LED's from China are typically not as high quality as those built elsewhere, but if the quality control of each LED is high, then it can be overcome, but likely will still not have as nice of light as a LED from the USA with the same quality control. If the light is bi-color, you are talking about more LED's with less output and RGBWW, you are paying for a light that is as flexible as it gets. a color spectrum of 2200k to 10000k, a gel feature, a special effects mode to emulate a fireplace, a police bar, or even the flashes of paparazzi cameras. we would not recommend if you want the best-looking image to go cheap on your lighting.

@@videomaker Yeah, I'm just saying. I had actually bought both my pc and camera 7-8 years ago. I'm just saying that there are pros that did spend that kind of money back then. And that they will be spending that kind of money, if not on LED lights, then something else. Like $10000+ on anamorphic lenses.
