I do a quick equipment review on a aeration nozzle to eliminate the sulfur dioxide (rotten egg) smell out of well water. This is a cheap, low cost, easy installation to install on your well that eliminates sulfur most of the time. Obviously before all of this was done, we performed a water test on this customer's water and no other issues were found (no iron, manganese, or iron bacteria) with the water besides sulfur. It is always key to perform a water test before spending any money on any kind of treatment devices.

I wanted to report that I have since installed Wendell Lee Well Services' hardware and it is amazing! Worth every cent and super simple to install. Water pump does not over activate which was a concern, but to make matters even better is it not only got rid of the smell, but my family and I have been noticing an improvement in the water quality (texture and taste). I am not saying that everyone will have my results but it's amazing how something so simple can make such a HUGE difference. Thank you!

Hey Grant, do you have a bag or diaphragm tank installed on the well? If you know the water has H2s in a particular area, you could just install a 80 gallon standard tank. Put a 1/16 weep hole at 15-20' down with a snifter valve on your check valve at the tank and air release. This would aerate the water in well and charge the tank with fresh air to expel the H2s out the release regularly. Worst case if it won't go away and they want to filter it, a cheap in/out filter with centaur carbon will last a long time. Being the water quality Is good there the weep hole won't cause any problems with clogging the pump with iron. Down here some guys do it on every well, but do it on one with enough iron and in a few years you could ruin a pump. Just throwing out some ideas if you have not tried them before. Take it easy man, Casey

My well is about 350 feet deep. The iron content is very high. The well has hydrogen sulfide from the iron, I was told. I tried to chlorinate the well. I started with one gallon of bleach and I could not smell any chlorine at the tap. I got up to 10 gallons of bleach, no chlorine smell. I must have a large reservoir of iron water feeding my pump. Will that aerator work on such a large water reservoir?

With all due respect, I realize that you are the professional and not me. Wouldn't that constant water flow drain the holding tank and cause the pump to kick on way too often? Also, with that well head exposed, what are the chances of that freezing?
@WendellLeeWellServices
@WendellLeeWellServices 4 года назад
This nozzle lets out maybe 3 gallons per hour. Most bladder tanks are at least a 20 to 40 gallon for most households, which have around either 6 or 12 gallons of drawdown. This means with no water running your pump would cut on once every two hours. If you have a 40 gallon tank, this would increase to once every 4 hours. A pump kicking on every 2 to 4 hours isn't considered way to much in my book, but you can make your own judgement call on that. With respect to the well head being exposed, we put a cover over the well to prevent it from freezing, or most customers have their own cover with their own freeze protection at their wellhead. We don't have issues with this freezing down here. We aren't located in Pennsylvania, so it is a different animal up there than it is here. I have sold these kits to several people in Pennsylvania and told them freezing would be an issue and they didn't care and made it work. Typically most pumps up there don't come out of the top, so this kit wasn't really intended for wells where the frost line is deep.

This past summer we had a new well pump and 180' of drop pipe installed along with a new pressure tank. Water was good. Then, a new Culligan salt system. Water still good. Two weeks ago, our water began to smell (more prevalent on the hot side). Couldn't replace the anode in water heater because it was rusted/crusted on. Replaced the water heater and when we cut it open, the sludge was pretty gross. Thought we had the problem solved as the water was good for 2 days, and then the egg smell came back. I bought one of the aerator kits exactly like yours, and put it on 3 days ago - no impact. 2 quick questions: 1. Do I need to have the water spigot at the well head wide open? 2. Does it usually take a few days to aerate the well water? Thanks.
@WendellLeeWellServices
@WendellLeeWellServices 5 лет назад
To answer your questions: 1. Yes the spigot at the well head needs to be wide open. 2. Yes it normally takes a little time for it to aerate all the water in your well. Is the smell still on the hot side since you changed your water heater out?
@ack1961
@ack1961 5 лет назад
@@WendellLeeWellServices Thanks for the real quick reply. The smell is more prevalent with hot water, but you can smell it with cold - even after the water heater swap. As I suspected, I didn't have the well head spigot more than 1/3 open. Originally, I just checked for water spray out of the nozzle before I put it in the well head. I went outside this afternoon and now have the spigot wide open. We'll see how it smells in a few days. THANKS! I am not sure if this will help us with the smell or not but we have alot of ferrous iron in our well water as does everyone in our area, we also have rotten egg smell which is very hard to tolerate! We can not afford any of the expensive softeners and filter systems to be put in to filter the iron and soften the water but desperately need something as the iron is ruining everything we have including our skin and hair and I have searched everywhere on the internet for cheaper ways to filter or soften the water but can't find anything except companies selling their systems and criticizing the others :( Do you know of any cheaper ways to get rid of this clear water iron or soften the water ? Even if it is something homemade LOL ! It has ruined our new washer, dishwasher , tubs ,showers, and the ONLY thing that we can get it to come off with in the toilets and showers is the Liquid Iron out in the spray bottle. It has ruined all our white clothes and sheets. We are a family of 8 and we have 3 daughters with really long hair that has always been really healthy and shiny until we moved here about 4 yrs ago ! It began getting really dry and breaking off now all our hair is thinning very badly. All our shampoo and soaps do not lather well at all . I never would believe iron could do this much damage to everything in a home and all of our hair is breaking off and dried out. I can not find a shower filter or water filter that works for the clear water iron :( We would be so grateful for anything you might know of that would help that isn't thousands of dollars . We had the water tested when we first moved here and all it showed was iron but the well was brand new and had not been used much (Not sure if that matters ) We have never had to take care of a well before so we are clueless LOL

Privette Family No I don't know of any for iron unfortunately. It is a tough animal to deal with without a good treatment system addressing it

There is two types of Iron.. ferric and ferrous. Ferric doesn't dissolve it must be removed by filter and there is many types. The problem you have is with ferrous. Ferrous or clear iron is measured in ppm. Water softeners are rated to remove ferrous iron. Some softeners will remove up to 10 ppm or they claim they do. The aosmith/ Hague line at Lowe's makes this claim. The real way to know if your softener will remove all the iron is to get your total hardness measured in grains per gallon. You can do this by getting a simple TDS meter for 10 bucks of Amazon. The number it yields is going to be in the hundreds. Use your raw untreated well water and measure the number. Once you have this number divide it by 17.3 or 17.6 and that will give you your total grains per gallon of hardness. Once you have this number you will need to get your ferrous iron measured in ppm. I'm sure you could use an iron strip of Amazon. Your ferrous iron cannot be higher than 8 to 1 over your hardness. So if your water has a total hardness of 42 grains and you have 5 parts per million of ferrous iron than 8 Times 5 is 40.. so you are ok barely but ok. This means a water softener rated for iron removal will work. If your total hardness number is 26 and you have 5 ppm iron than you are screwed and need some type of iron remover filter or aerator tank either will work with ferrous iron. The 8/1 ratio is everything with clear iron. Smell in water and ferric (oxydated) (iron) aka rust and other thing need filtration or aeration. You can put up a big blue filter and use the kdf filters they sell. The value here is that you can remove the kdf filter and wash is out like 8 times before you have to buy a new one. Kdf85 uses redox for smell removal and ferric iron and other oxidated things. It would be install AFTER your softener. Hope this helps...

first things first, why the hell would it smell ?
@WendellLeeWellServices
@WendellLeeWellServices 5 лет назад
It's mother nature. Some places the water running under the ground stinks, some places it has iron in it, some places it doesn't. It isn't anyone's fault, it's just there and its the only option most people have other than not having any water at all.
@peter_kelly
@peter_kelly 5 лет назад
The smell is from Hydrogen Sulfide gas produced by bacteria feeding off small amounts of sulfur in well water and is pretty common. The aeration treatment method shown in this video is effective when concentrations of hydrogen sulfide less than 2 mg/L., oxygen is added to water and a reaction between oxygen and hydrogen sulfide react to produce odorless sulfate. With anything above 2 mg/L you'd either want to shock the well once a year or install a greensand iron filter.

My well has the pressure canister sitting on top of were the water comes out so how would i use this set up
@WendellLeeWellServices
@WendellLeeWellServices 5 лет назад
I'm assuming by pressure canister you are referring to the bladder tank. The only issue I see is getting the nozzle by the tank to install it. If there isn't enough clearance, you would have to remove the tank to install the nozzle. But it can be done regardless of where the bladder tank is located. Thanks for watching.

Have you tested your water to see if anything else is wrong with it? Water can smell and it not be sulfur.

its probably your hot water heater, you need a plug in anode that helps get rid of the smell ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-l6U8fu0oidQ.html

If it's sulphur, or iron bacteria aeration will help, but not fix the problem. Chlorine or peroxide injection. If it only smells on hot water try replacing anode rod in your water heater.

No iron or manganese in well water? What are the odds ? This is a scam
@WendellLeeWellServices
@WendellLeeWellServices Год назад
What are the odds you have no clue what you are talking about? What are the odds you haven't gone to our website where it specifically says, "Test your well water before putting any device on it to treat water"? What are the odds many areas of the country are different and some have iron in their water and some don't? I'm glad I have people like you to educate me since you have more experience than our company that's been around for over 100 years
