One cheap bike, and one super bike, both designed with aerodynamics in mind, and for triathlon and time trials. But does the cost difference really translate to performance? Mark & Sam do some experimenting!

Same experiment with deeper wheels on the cheap bike would be interesting. As most people would buy a cheaper bike and upgrade the wheels.
@itarry4
@itarry4 3 года назад
Yhea wheels and tires, which they probably did but still, are usually the first if not only true upgrade many will make and are supposed to be the biggest difference you can make. Seems odd to put TT Bars on and not do the wheel set. Even if it was a slightly cheaper deep wheel, say alloy not carbon it'd still have felt more true. Maybe 105 as well but that isn't as important.
@log_it8282
@log_it8282 3 года назад
The time difference equals to ~15W savings assuming a completely flat course. Slightly over the expected savings between a 30mm standard wheelset and a very good aeroset like the 1100 ARCs (about 10W at 40km/h).
@itarry4
@itarry4 3 года назад
@@log_it8282 which is why it'd make it a good comparison especially as a average decent deep wheelset is probably the first thing most would do these days.

@itarry4

@@uaproman oh I know I watch all the Global bike/Triathlon channels but I've noticed that GTN seems to have a fair number of watchers who don't watch GCN so it'd be good if they did it on here for them. I'm not overly bothered about the results as I know them roughly anyway I just believe it would have been a goid idea to add to this video or for making another. I always think these types of video should be as real world as possible and as I said I honestly think that a new deeper wheelset would be the first upgrade anyone who knows their cycling would do, even before the TT Bars in many cases even with long distance Triathletes.

GCN have done a few videos along these lines - with old aluminium bikes and with Chinese 'no brand' bikes comparing them to the top of the range. In both, I got the impression that for the average age-grouper you aren't really gaining that much by spending an extra 3 or 4 grand on a top of the range bike.

I bought an old Giant TCR TT bike, the type Jan Ullrich rode. In spite of being alloy, it's really light and has been upgraded with a carbon cockpit. I changed the old 9 speed Dura-ace to modern ultegra. The main problem is it won't take modern wheels so I haven't managed to find decent aero race wheels yet.

Fair play, gents, and thanks for not trashing the used bike. And I actually prefer the look of the Boardman and that bike would've won something if you tested the two in a sideways hurricane. You'd fly back to Kansas on that Canyon. And maybe price-wise, the comparison is more new 911 v. unrestored rally car.

I liked this one, thought it really funny. Some take aways: add some deep section wheels to the Boardman bike & you’re in business. Personally, I’d change the aerobars as well, so I could get into a more praying mantis position, saving another 10-20 watts, rather than “scooping up air” with the aerobars in this flat position. Also, I’d look to see if I could rearrange the cables on the boardman, that might save a few watts. Finally, a bikefit & more comertable saddle would save the most watts I think. But all in all, for another 500-700GBP you’d have yourself a smashing “cheap” TT bike. Obviously, you’d then need to add hydration in the front, on the frame & behind the saddle, as well as a bento box for nutrition/spares, etc just to do a 70.3, or full Ironman distance. This would make your bike slower again. But, be honest, out of roughly 5M people worldwide doing triathlon, how many of us are in with a chance of qualifying for the 70.3 worlds, or Kona..? If I were Canyon, I would not like this comparison much...
@damu6678

A more accurate TT measurement would be to start the time when you hit 300 watts. It removes the starting problems with wrong gearing, not clipping in, etc

@lfoster7601
@lfoster7601 3 года назад
As others have mentioned, I suspect the cheap bike would significantly close the gap with a 2nd pair of good quality deep rim wheels. You'd still be paying a fraction of the cost of the "Super bike", but be well within striking range - 3min on an IM70.3 is about 1.5 on a traditional 25mTT course, and good wheels would absolutely close that. So basically, most of the money spent on the Canyon is wasted...

I like that constant Power output test as it shows the aero differences but one major advantage of Dura Ace and the stiffer frame etc is allowing you to deliver more power more easily etc, I feel like a flat out effort over 2 or 5 km would be another excellent test and then you could possibly do some sort of Power for time equation and see what you get there but without that part watching you max out over a short distance on both bikes would really show how much more performance the Canyon can help get out of your body!! What do you think?

Having an equivalent wheel set on the boardman would slash the time difference over a 70.3 to about no more than a minute. If are not racing for podiums that would be more than enough kit. In other words the Boardman plus race wheels is good enough for 99% of all triathletes in all races outside a World Championship.

My s works venge is just quicker, I got told off by the bike shop for using it all year round and by my wallet with the repair bill. Switched out to a 700 pound Allez and ironically ended up doing crazy amounts of miles on it in winter. The super bikes are quicker and it’s so nice in summer getting back on it but it’s a lot of money to only pull out on race day if you want to keep it at that quick speed unless you got the money for replacing duraace group sets all the time, if you are truely smashing the miles. Easier to accelerate and maintain a higher average. As simple as that, which clocks up the longer you ride. Especially if you are someone that can average above 20 mph consistently. Everything gets fast and smooth.

Nice comparison, but with a difference of just 4 or 5 seconds in the first test, you just can't extrapolate it as you did. Firstly, the results are only accurate to the nearest second anyway. Secondly, when you take into account the natural fluctuations in power output, a few seconds difference isn't significant at all. Allowing for the errors in the test, there is no evidence that the bikes performed any differently to each other.
