Earlier this year, Mark took to eBay with the challenge of buying himself a 2nd hand cheap triathlon bike & then testing it against a Super Bike - of course, it lost! Well now after a few upgrades we're back to see if our Boardman TT can cause an upset!

Come Mark, hang in there. The Boardman is now a good representation of a beginner taking on their first triathlon. Next episode could reflect that most triathletes in this budget area would then dial the position further (episode - advice and test), spend money upgrading the wheels (episode), add nutrition storage (episode), etc. Keep this series going!
@kajet666
@kajet666 2 года назад
Very good idea! Not sure if the wheel upgrade would be a priority though. Much as people like to buy new wheels, they provide one of the most expensive watt savings.
@ManyThingsYT
@ManyThingsYT 2 года назад
@@kajet666 a good pair of aluminum wheels will really make the ride quality feel better, aero wheel covers that you can put on your rear wheel are around $150 compared to spending like $900 for a real disc wheel, but still, there are other areas to upgrade first 😅

Given that rider position matters much more than the bike itself, I think it is very important to optimize rider position on both bikes before testing. And if the answer is "the cockpit is garbage and I cannot adjust it how I want", then so be it. But it's unfair and therefore not very interesting to be dialed in on one and botching the fit on the other
@veganpotterthevegan
@veganpotterthevegan Год назад
Totally agree but at the same time, the less familiar position on the Boardman could hypotheticallly be faster at the same time. Also, the fastest position on one bike may not be the fastest on the other due to body interaction with the bikes

Great video guys. But you should also do it at a lower power, to be more representative of a typical AG triathlete on a long course tri. Maybe 200w-220w. It would be intertesting to see the diference.
@Tibovl

I've always been against the aerobar shifters: the problem is well illustratedin this video. If you're shifting, it's because things are increasing in technical difficulty, and if that's the case you're rarely on the aeros: if it's not technical and you need to shift, it's not a problem to reach across from the aeros and shift a gear. Visa versa is FAR more difficult.
@MaartenAnna
@MaartenAnna 2 года назад
Yeah, you really need to shift before you run into trouble, i.e. shift down 2 gears before making a turn. Look at when it gets steeper and shift 50-20m before that point (I never get out of the saddle anyway), just keep that 88-92 cadence going.
@philpaterson5936
@philpaterson5936 2 года назад
I think the key thing to remember here, is that many of the upgrades you made weren't to the "aero" of the bike, just a wheel cover. The upgrades to gears, cockpit and brakes are more for safety and comfort. Over a longer race, you might see better times from improved drivetrain efficiency and braking on hilly courses. But given that 80% of the drag is the rider, i wonder why when replacing the cockpit you didn't opt for something that allowed you to go narrower at the front end and then tilt the bars up. I bet with the GP5000 tyres though it certainly felt nicer to ride too.

For performance I'd try some alloy aero wheels on the basis that's the kind of real world upgrade that people who buy a bike like this would make. e.g. I bought an old Giant TCR TT bike (it has the same profile design cockpit). I replaced the old 10 spd dura ace with modern 11 spd Ultegra (+ the same dura ace shifters that you used) and replaced the cheap training wheels with Kinetic KS1 alloy aero wheels. I left the old dura ace breaks as they were fine. For a 60 year old never going to win anything triathlete it's a perfectly adequate bike for a total outlay of around £1,000.

Can you imagine one second GTN making a video with as an end result that on an iroman course, there is a 1' difference between a cheapo alloy bike and a top notch Canyon....? - aero position is narrower on the canyon -concerning the aero advantage, the canyon has a deeper rim in front, so the aero lost at the rear is offset by the gain in front. -I guess that bearings on the boardman haven't been cleaned and regreased... -Tires are better on the Canyon And.... they're telling me that putting a disc wheel on the rear doesn't improve a bike performance on a flat course....I don't believe it one second....every test I've done with a disc wheel, whatever the bike, improved the performance of the bike....or else they've installed the crappiest rustiest most defective disc wheel at the back of this Boardman bike.

Why not throw the road bike with aero bars into the competition? This is the exact conundrum I am in right now: 1998 Cervelo TT or 2019 Tarmac with clip on aero bars which will be faster over 40k?
@gudrune
@gudrune 2 года назад
Will depend on your position on the bike, I'm pretty sure. For example, the tarmac probably doesn't allow you a seat angle steep enough (probably 75 degrees rather than 80). The front end of the tarmac may not allow you to go low enough either. That could result in a crappy Frankenstein position on the tarmac, and make you slow. I have a giant propel and getting in a TT position on it is quite an adventure. As a rule of thumb, I think a real TT bike will be faster than a road bike that you pimp.

On the rolling downhill, need to measure the time, not the distance, otherwise you are mostly measung the rolling drag, not the aero drag.
@yrjopekkajr
@yrjopekkajr 2 года назад
Less aero and rolling drag = quicker speed = more distance. So no.
@kajet666
@kajet666 2 года назад
@@yrjopekkajr actually Matteo may have a point. They don't take the same time to stop, so a higher average speed doesn't necessarily mean longer distance. At the end of the roll, aero plays a relatively small role, so when you stop depends on whether gravity is stronger than rolling resistance. On the other hand, the bike that is more aero will enter that section at a higher speed and have more momentum to lose before it stops.

I am confused, I watch the olympics and everybody is riding a Tarmac middle of the road bike... The bike doesn't even matter, the gains were in the swimming and running... Is the bike the money maker of the industry?
@IanLoughead
@IanLoughead 2 года назад
Olympics uses road bikes and the riders sit in a pelton together, so aerodynamics is considerably a different thing. Also, those athletes are using top of the line road bikes. They were S-Works, and Canyon Aeroroad, and Trek Modone. While the bike may not make as big a difference, a lightweight bike in the Olympics is essential so you push less weight around to have fresher legs for the run.
