In this episode, we saved over $900 USD by configuring a CHAINSAW SHARPENER to sharpen our WOODLAND MILLS saw blades. (We also used a hand tooth setter, which worked perfectly well.)
The sharpeners Woodland Mills sells are $749 (as of March 2023), plus shipping (& the tooth setter is an additional $299). Our set up cost $120. Easy math on that one…😳
Tune in to see how we set this up & how well this works to set & sharpen sawmill blades.

Best video on using one of these chainsaw sharpeners. Two questions: How long has the grinding wheel lasted? and did you do a video on the setter? I keep breaking teeth with my hand setter, which is similar or the same as yours. Thanks!

Thanks! The wheel lasted quite a while (didn’t count the number of blades done)…& it is the cheap wheel that came with the cheapo sharpener. We were pleasantly surprised with it. We did not do a separate video on the hand setter (it’s basically just doing what was shown at the end of this vid…but doing that like 1000x). Hmm…do you have blades from a different manufacturer? (Perhaps a different metal composition??)

Blades from Woodland mills. I'll try it again. What wheel setting do you use? @@PopplePeople

@lukefisher7618 ~86 degrees…we took a new blade & lined up the grinding stone to match the angle of a new blade (kind of eyeballed it) & that’s about where it landed, so we went with that.

How did that blade cut compared to the new ones? When my uncle was staying with us, he sharpened my blades for me and it seemed to work well, but I haven't done it myself yet. Now I have several to do, and I don't want to pay for the WM sharpener and setter either. I enjoyed the video.

Good! We’d say this setup is definitely comparable (though it isn’t “automatic” like the WM one).

What setting on the hand held setter did you find worked best for setting the band? Looking for a setting around .021. Good video.

On the first blade we did, the teeth didn’t move much (factory set was still basically intact). This is the setting on the handheld tooth setter that matched that initial “set” (if that makes sense): If the setter is placed with the orange handles to the right/knob to the left, the number “5” is lined up with the longer tong under the caliper-looking raised part on the side. Hope that helps & makes sense! (If you want to see a pic of the setting we used, feel free to email us & I can send you that photo.)

@@PopplePeople Thanks I think I will get one and give it a try.

I ended up buying Woodmizer's sharpening wheel, and using that. It did require setup work, though, as the alignment hole is of a different size. To fix this, I made adapter discs

@@PopplePeopleI should mention, blades come with a geometry: The 2 angles of the tooth. (10,30 is typical). The wheel must match not only the tooth spacing, but also the 2 angles. In your sharpening method, your stone is "universal" and will match all

How do you know when you can no longer sharpen? Is the band becoming dangerous to use after it gets too thin due to removal?
@PopplePeople

Great questions…3-4 resharpenings is about average. 5 max.

Actually, better than we thought! Haven’t gotten that video pulled together yet…we were pleasantly surprised. Comparable to sending out to get resharpened on a WM “fancy” sharpener.

@@PopplePeople OK, good to hear. Thing is, is it repeatable? how many times can you sharpen? I ask, because I plan on using a special, extra wide grinding stone specifically for that. That stone matches the profile shape and touches up everything - the tip, the back, and the gullet
@PopplePeople
@PopplePeople 4 месяца назад
Well blades can only be sharpened so many times (they won’t last forever). We haven’t hit the limit yet…we have done I think 3 resharpenings so far & still getting solid results. Eventually they’ll need to be tossed though. Don’t have a number for you on that though. It also depends on how much you take off each time; the more vigorous you are, the sooner it’ll need to be replaced vs resharpened.
@eitantal726

@@PopplePeople I heard reports for getting at least 5 uses out of a band. If you get 5 uses, Congrats you're on-par. Impressive that you can achieve that without the special stone. I don't think I have that finesse

How do you index the teeth?
@PopplePeople
@PopplePeople 2 месяца назад
Great question! Do you mean adjust the angle of the stone wheel to match the tooth face & gullet? (For that, we took a brand new blade & used it as a “guide” & matched the wheel angle to that tooth angle on a new blade. It seems to be working well.) Thanks for watching!
