Check out our winter freeze proof livestock water system. With a 50-gallon portable tank, Jobe Megaflow valve and a syphon hose, this system is watering 338 head of cows. It was 15 below zero wind chill last night and the water never froze. We absolutely love this winter water method that works no matter how cold it gets. For more grazing info check out my new book " How To Think Like A Grazier" on our website: greenpasturesfa...

Howdy Greg. Tried the siphon on a tire water tank last night. Had it tied about 1/2 way up an O'Brien. It built a stalagmite and froze over. I had a water control on the outlet end. It may have got plugged up with some water bugs. The flexzilla hose froze solid but looks to be ok. Gonna try it again this afternoon and night with some changes to see if it might keep running. Might be just too cold for the siphon to work.

The whole siphon hose needs to be smooth, no valves of any kind. Tie up the end that is running onto the ground so that you have at least 50-60% of the hose running water out. We hit -25 below last night with wind chill, hose was running great this morning from the siphon. In cases where the ice sickle wants to form, tie a piece of tarp over the end to keep the air and wind off the end of the hose.

Hi Greg thanks for the video however you mention the -25 (with windchill) The only effect wind chill has on inanimate objects, such as car radiators and water pipes, is to more quickly cool the object to the current air temperature

Your mild winters are helping make cattle profitable. In Alberta we had a real tough stretch of winter lately. 30 days of minus 40. 250 dollars for a round bale. Makes it expensive when it gets this cold. Feedlots are running out of grain. Keep the train loads of corn heading north America.

Wow did you say $250 per round bale? How do you stay in business with that price?

Only FISH and frogs in the ponds, not livestock is key. I learned of this decades ago. Greg is the first person I've seen actually using tanks rather than free access to ponds. No one around here farms like Greg, and it's painful to look at. I'm starting up.

@@pixiesplantation So long as your cattle don't destroy the banks by having limited access, and don't become mud wallows, they work, but also are difficult areas to fence because of flooding.

I don't know if anyone else has experienced this but here in upstate NY, running water does freeze. It is a cool system though. If it works for you, that is great.

My tank heater got unplugged for a couple hours yesterday, had a half inch of ice on it when I checked. If one of those hydrants freezes up here, you have to get a someone with a portable welder to come thaw it out, or wait til spring and dig it up. Looking good down there. Have a great weekend.

Ingenious - I love watching your videos! We have to run hose full out when it's really cold here ( otherwise our tank freezes solid as well as 1 inch irrigation line(, and we've had frost free drinkers freeze Wide open and make overnight skating rinks ( cold enough to freeze it open when cows drank and then went and laid down and didn't drink for 8 hours) My grandpa used to water cows and horses 2x a day up in Alberta and when it's really cold that's all cows get when we break ice 2x a day. But many up here stockpile and as soon as snow comes, they stop watering and cows just eat snow, so I guess mine are spoiled by many peoples standards Stay warm and keep recording!

Thanks again for all your videos! Today we should be getting 1-3 acres inches of snow. I rather have some snow instead of freezing rain. It looks like a lot of your snow melted from the other day. I’m so ready for spring so I can start building my fence.

One thing folks should know regarding unrolling bales: hay is like wine, ever year is different. We bought some hay last year and it was baled during that heat dome we had in Western Canada. The hay was incredible quality because it was harvested so early and baled so quick sheet cutting but it's is so dry that the fiber of the hay breaks so easily that even if it is unrolled backwards, it falls apart in only a few feet. You go 40 feet and the bale is turned into a lang mattress about 2ft thick! Oh well, just more exercise with the old fork!

When a bale does that I raise it up and down. I will touch ground then go 100' and touch ground again.

When the power goes out in a cold snap I let the taps run so that I don't have frozen pipes That's what I learned to do when I was living with my Grammy.. I am lucky the infrastructure was upgraded a few years ago and the lines that feeds the port runs down my street so our area doesn't have extended outages I can't remember when the last one happened! Sometimes It goes off just enough to turn the computers and clocks off and parts of the city are a day or two before the powers back the other lucky thing is my water bill is not not connected to consumption. I can remember the time my son fell asleep in the shower he woke up when all the hot water turned cold I have wondered how long that nap lasted. We had installed two large tanks when we had the B&B so it must have been a long nap. Thanks for taking me down memory lane . 🤗🙄🤔🤷🏼‍♀️😘💞💕💞🌟🍀🌟👍👍👍🌟🍀🌟🖖🖖🖖🌟🍀🌟🙋🏼‍♀️

Can also be done with a tank connector in the side wall, potentially with a sturdy elbow to adjust the outflow.

@neilmicke1622
@neilmicke1622 2 года назад
I agree, here are some facts. A 5/8 inch (standard) garden hose will put out 8-10 gallon per minute depending on hose length and water pressure of 40-60 PSI. A faucet that drips 120 drops/ minute will leak about 11.4 gallons per day , finally a hose that leaks 1 cup per minute will waste 48 gallons in 12 hours. I believe that you are running closer to 50 gallons per hour or even more.

nice fat cows, have been tempted to try one of the constant flow water troughs but then I have seen 3" water line freeze while flowing, the water was being pulled from a pond with a 4cylinder diesel running a twin piston water pump, the water was being pumped about 1/4 mile, we had to cut the line in several places to remove the ice, in several places the water line would be frozen solid with the exception of about a 1" circle in the center, now I suspect the temperature of below ground water source might make the difference?
@rosskellymcgarva3130

What is the use of the tire pieces around the trough? I’m assuming they’re to protect the ground from being pounded out around the trough

We don’t have any bales over 1500 lbs. If you found a 2500 lb bale, the 700 lb atv would not pull it on any type of grade. I know those wet haylage bales can go over 3000 lbs, need a tractor for those.

You still want to turn off the water once temperatures get colder because the hose does freeze in negative temperatures. A plate with a drinking hole will help protect from surface ice in sub-zero Temps as well
