This is pretty cool. I seen the tire tanks before but I never saw anybody cut the top out. The cows just had to lean in to get the water, this looks much better. Plus now it’s big enough so if you’re out there covered in dirt and sweat you got a quick little Jacuzzi to jump in. ;)

Great ideas but i recon the integrity of the seal between the tyre and the small amount of concrete in the bottom will fail due to cattle pushing against the flexible tyre and eventually you will get water seeping out from the bottom and causing a problem with poaching. i know a farmer who did this once, it did work but he filled the bottom up about 6" above the rim of the tyre in the bottom which had the effect of encapsulating and sealing the whole bottom. Hope it works for you Josh.

Nice job as usual. However the NIH says as others commented below - Are tires toxic? The short answer is that yes, they are. Tires contain a host of chemicals and metals that should not be in the human body. They do gradually erode and break down, leaching those chemicals into the water and the environment. Sep 2, 2021.

WOW great thinking 🤔... with your drain...???... there will be water left over in the pipeline after you drain the tank, won't that crack/split when it freezes, then you won't have a sealed 🤐 drain pipeline. That said the bowling ball 🎳 won't work because you have capped off the other end of the drain.... pressure....A simple drain plug on the lower side of the tank would be the easiest.... with your safety bowling ball drain

The only concern I would have with that system is that tires have dozens of toxic chemicals in them, and the toxins will leach out into the water. The toxins could show up in the animal meat.
@StoneyRidgeFarmer
@StoneyRidgeFarmer 2 года назад
why would a tire have any toxins different from a Rubbermaid water tank? If tires were loaded with toxins...we'd be constantly exposed to them driving...we'll test the toxin theory at some point...maybe send off a water sample for a test....great idea!
@sunshine3914
@sunshine3914 2 года назад
I had looked into this because I can’t even be outside a new tire store without the vapor making my eyes, nose, lips, & lungs burn ( same with gasoline & diesel fuel ), but then I have hypersensitive receptors that seem to be getting more sensitive with age. Anyways, my findings... Q: Is it safe to grow vegetables in old tires? A: “Short-term, yes, tire planters are OK, although the soil in black tire planters will probably get hotter than most plants would prefer. Long-term, no, because the tire rubber will slowly biodegrade and release zinc, carcinogenic PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) and other toxic compounds into your garden soil. Q: Are tires toxic? A: The short answer is that yes, they are. Tires contain a host of chemicals and metals that should not be in the human body. And they do gradually erode and break down, leaching those chemicals into the environment. Also, Rubbermaid makes plastic food containers, & plastic uses less harmful compounds.

...but the life of beef cattle is rather short nowadays. So, less exposure.
@otov100

@@StoneyRidgeFarmer We are constantly exposed when driving. They're not as bad as lots of other stuff but not as safe as food grade plastic. Awareness of particulate emissions from tires is just coming to light. That being said I woudn't really worry about it much for this application.

The cement will seal better if you put water in the tank right away and let it set up under water. A stop and drain valve instead of a ball valve will allow your line to drain back like a hydrant so you don’t freeze your line into the tank if it is empty

Pipe is a 'bit' oversized - if the solar flow rate is only 12-14 gals a min?
@StoneyRidgeFarmer
@StoneyRidgeFarmer 2 года назад
when you are running 1 mile of pipe for cattle waterers....the pipe needs to be larger to reduce friction resistance in the pipe. Sure I could have used 1 inch or even 3/4 inch pipe all over the farm....however this has the potential to be used as irrigation at some point...and friction loss is real...especially when running this amount of footage...1 1/4 inch is the minimum suggested to use for this project by folks with much more experience than you and I
@davidlloyd-jones8519
@davidlloyd-jones8519 2 года назад
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer The calculations are much the same as for electric (pipe/cable) ..ie friction - aka resistance x pressure/voltage x flow/current - ie amps or galls'min.. Yes the distance is long - so then you have the question bigger pipe less resistance but more expense - or bigger pump (pressure) and PV then smaller pipe.. then of course your water tank is essentially a battery . anyway, is true i dont have enough info - like grade/ how many cows/ are you, suppling more than one trough and plumbed radial? (like a tree) .. Anyway - good luck

Please reconsider using this due to the possibility of chemicals from the tire leaching into the water, especially when exposed to heat and sunlight 😬 Exposed steel wire used in the tires construction if ingested, can lead to the potentially fatal hardware disease. The wire can also cut or poke the cattle.
@StoneyRidgeFarmer
@StoneyRidgeFarmer 2 месяца назад
you do understand that there are tens of thousands of these tire water tanks all over the world...that a rubber/plastic water tank is industry standard. That I keep goldfish in these tanks 365 days a year and they keep the tanks clean, if the tank was leaching dangerous chemicals.....a goldfish would not survive. The tank is rubber, the pipe is plastic, the valve is plastic, the drain is plastic.....it's not harming any animals....and there's no metal wire to cut the cattle or give them any hardware disease. These tanks stay a constant 45-75 degrees all year long, with the acceptation of winter when they freeze on top. There's nothing wrong with a tire water tank, I'd be more concerned about drinking from a red solo cup than this tank

That's not ''Giant''! Thats puny. Only about 200 litres. I have an ''average tank'' behind my barn, 1000 litres. As for the ball safety device, bars are a lot simpler, and foolproof. However, some farmers have a water on demand here, where the cows push a lever, with their head, that fills a bowl with water, (a bit like a urinal) and the cow can drink. When it stops drinking, the lever is released, and the water stops. Minimal wasted water, and nothing can drown in it. Also, minimal spillage means the tha drinking area doesnt turn into a bog. .
@StoneyRidgeFarmer
@StoneyRidgeFarmer 2 года назад
you think a 2.5 foot deep X 7 feet across tire tank only holds 60 gallons of water? Sorry but picking this concept apart is just making you look silly. Sit back and enjoy learning the way another farmer does it...you don't need to fix a non-existant problem like water dribbling from a cows mouth "wasting water"....what is wasted water in a cow pasture? How is a water tank gonna turn into a bog by 3 oz of water dripping off a cows lips? I'm not so sure you've got all your facts quite figured out my friend. I'm installing some different waterers in a future video...maybe you'll like them...not sure...none of this needs "fixing" ...it's just my way of doing it.

@@StoneyRidgeFarmer Ah! Thanks, I had to guess the size, it doesn't look that big, but that's probably due to the camera. Apologies for my mistakes! However, I can assure you that locally, the cows turn the area around their water tank into a bog. So, some of the farmers have installed a water feeder with the mechanism I mentioned. Because the rotate, and the bog causes problems when they plant crops afterwards. I guess it's not just water dripping off their mouths, but them splashing it all over. Good luck with your experiments. I'm sure every farm has its own specific problems, and solutions. .

even water is a toxic chemical if you drink too much of it my friend. This tire has fish in it....the canary in the mine here is the fish. Maybe we send off the water for a test at some point to see what it's potential toxicity might be

I enjoy some of your videos but the content is becoming a constant advertisement for your sponsoring products.
@StoneyRidgeFarmer
@StoneyRidgeFarmer 2 года назад
Audrey....I want you to think about this from a different perspective my friend. First....there have been sponsored videos on the channel since its early beginings...so things have not changed at all. Sponsorship dollars are what pays for a lot of what I do here. It costs me over $6k per month and sometimes over $20k per month to produce this content for you.....SAY WHAT??? Yep....crazy huh....so without the sponsorship and ad revenue this farm would not be anywhere near where it's at. The water system alone is nearly $50,000!! The Mega shop.....$300k...fencing $250k....farmland, trucks, cars, tractors, fuel, soil, manure, sawmill, gravel, cattle, hay....and the list goes on and on...so as you see me give a shoutout to a company...which may or may not be a sponsor....understand that I have interpersonal relationships with a lot of folks, companies and viewers. These are all spokes on a wheel that keep the machine (farm channel) turning. Not sure if you understand all this.....but I've spend over $1 Million $$$$ in the past 7 years building this farm on social media!! Yep....money is necessary. I keep it fun and light hearted but at the end of the day you are watching a BIG BUDGET CHANNEL! BIG BUDGET MY FRIEND! Tens of thousands spent every month for all of us to learn and enjoy. That's the rub...do ya understand a little bit better now? FYI this is not a sponsored video

Love the tire setup josh also id put something over the valve just incase the cows or calf nock off the bowling ball plus if a calfs in there the cover would protect that valve from getting g kicked or smashed.

@otov100
@otov100 2 года назад
@@kdegraa yeah but, tires are onky partially rubber. I would not drink water stored in a tire unless there was no other option. Not ideal. That being said, I don't think cows live long enough to get cancer. As long as the water is flowing and not just sitting there it shoudn't be a problem.
@otov100
@otov100 2 года назад
They have a point but probably not a real concern. It would be interesting to do a lab test on the meat or milk to see how much toxin accumulated and if it was of any real concern for human consumption but I doubt it. I wouldn't want to drink tire water directly if there were other options. Having the cows drink it and then eating the cows would dilute any toxins.
