Checking Front End Toe In 

Beautiful car. I get asked about doing a video on this all the time but couldn't think of a way of doing it without an alignment machine that would be accurate. Thanks for posting.

the title is 'front end toe adjustment'. this video only shows you taking measurements. how does this help show how to adjust the toe?

@gst69man I do have a video on it here somewhere.Yes i did paint it myself i used Dupont single stage centari wish i could have done a base coat clear coat but at the time i could not afford the extra cost.

@EricTheCarGuy beilive it or not there is a video where a guy does an alignment or measurements rather using sand, 1/8 tile, tube, bucket of water string, tapemeasure, and a lil trigomatry. he doesnt show making ajustments however. I think you might enjoy richpins video of making a leak down tester. i made it and have yet to try it out.

Nice oval. I have a '55 I've been meaning to restore for a while but it's nowhere near as clean as yours.

Seems pretty hard to get this within 1/16", when using a simple tape measure with two people.

2 Questions: 1. What size are your front tires? I like that width. 2. Please make a rear toe checking AND adjusting video? Please?

How can measuring center to center of fronts of tires (Front & Rear) give you any kind of baseline? That would only work if your tires were the same width F&R, your tires in front rear were perfectly (no imperfections in RUBBER MOLDS), the camber front and rear was identical (which it isn't), and IF all the above were possible, the width of rear (drum to drum) was the same as the front with the wheel PERFECTLY STRAIGHT, no spacers, no narrowed beam, and all 4-tires have the EXACT same amount of air pressure. This post is an absolute waste of time (as is my reply), and likely caused many inexperienced DIYers, hours of frustration. To REALLY do this correctly, with basic household items, you DO NOT need rear wheel measurements at all, and it doesn't matter what size tires (or any of the above measurements are besides tire pressure are)! So, to do it RIGHT, using an assistant (unless you have toe plates, or really straight piece of this sheet metal about 2-feet long and tall enough to reach near center of EACH front wheel, measure distance from front of front wheels and write it down, than while leaving your sheet metal in same place, measure distance between REAR of FRONT wheels and write it down. If the first number is higher than the second, you have tow-OUT (=BAD), if second number is higher, you have toe-IN (=BETTER). The goal is to have between 1/16" & 1/8" toe-IN, so assuming steering wheel is already straight, you'll count turns tightening or loosening the tie rod end on each side (equal turns), until you reach the goal. REMEMBER that the left side is reverse threads, so to create toe-in (if out), you'll want to tighten tie-rod ends, if you need toe-OUT, you unscrew tie-rod ends and EQUAL amount on each side. Depending on how far your initial setting is, be careful on number of turns, it won't take much to change a whole inch with a couple turns on each side. Do 1/4-1/2 turns to fine tune adjustments. NOTE: it's a good idea to bounce the front end between adjustments, to get tires to settle. Also make sure the steering wheel stays straight (some people use a locking mechanism to prevent steering wheel from turning, or tying a rope to it, and rolling the other end up in the drivers side window so you can see if the wheel is moving easier (don't think it won't break your window if you're not paying attention though, use it as a visual guide, NOT A LOCK)... For those without flat sheet metal or toe plates, you'll need a second person to hold a stiff yard stick or equivalent, horizontally across the center of one of the front wheels, you'll hold the other one while also taking the measurements. Don't move suspension, until both sides have been measured and adjusted, THAN bounce between both side adjustments to settle tires, as they'll twist a bit due to friction on the floor and your measurements won't change enough between adjustments. Hopefully you get the idea. It's really the same for doing any vehicle, but probably easiest (or more easy to understand) looking at udjusting tow on a GO-Kart or dune buggy, etc. It really is simple on an older bug.

Good procedure but never take measurements off the tires. Too many inconsistencies. Only take measurements off the rims and only after you have checked them for runout. If you want to see why, just jack your front end off the ground, spin a tire and watch one of the grooves go back and forth.

Mock or mark the tires? Pot or part? Senna or center? Lol
