Great video as ever very informative. I had my caravan for 2 years before I thought to check and to my surprise the tyres were 16 years old but you would not tell looking at them as no cracks or anything. Got them changed straight away and got the same mark due to how well they held up. 👍

Another excellent and informative vlog Dan. My spare was unusable and illegal when it was removed from the underslung carrier. It was installed at manufacture, went in the bin. The spare wheel now lives under the bed.

More great information Dan. Just replaced all 3 of my tyres after recent service. The spare was on from manufacture and the other 2 were 6/7 years old. Like others have said I am thinking of putting the spare under the bed rather than in the carrier under the van.

Dan most useful blog. We purchased a van second hand and didnt know of the 7 year recomendation, Drove from the midlandsto Minehead and when goingto fit the wheel clamp noticed a wire sticking out of the sidewall. I then realised there wre a lot of wires sticking out. The tyre was 6 years old and had structurely failed. I hate to think what might have hapened if we had travelled for a significant furthur distance

Hi Dan. Thanks for making this video. I got a bit of a back lash for the video I made but I have now re edited it. Its not as indepth as yours and I will never be in the same league as you but I do watch your videos with paper and pen at the ready for notes.. thanks again for all you do for the caravaning community. Morning Paul & Sarah - i trust you are well. I didnt see your video, so please dont think this was in response to your upload. I saw quite a heated thread on facebook and out of the 58 comments, all but 2 were wholly inaccurate and misleading, so I thought i should address the issue. Its easy for others to criticise, but to create, share and upload takes alot of effort and please dont let any negativity stop or reshape what you do. Your channel is brilliant, and really deserves a lot more of a following. Take care, hopefully catch up in real life in the near future. Dan

Excellent information there Dan. UV light doesn’t do the tyres any good. Our caravan is kept under cover away from UV and the tyres were still like new when I had them changed at service time. I requested the dealer order the original tyre brand Trailer Maxx but Bailey had changed their OEM tyre to Security so they ordered them from Bailey, Prima Leisure. Cheers, Rob

Hi Dan, it’s not just the van tyres we should check as we’ve had our Lexus RX now for 2 yrs and it had 4 brand new quality branded tyres when we collected it, last week I was fitting new front anti roll bar links and I noticed the tyres cracking all around the rim area I was genuinely surprised to find all 4 tyres the same and after only doing 13k miles so it was a trip to our local fitters for 4 new ones at £145each. I can tell you as a Yorkshireman with short arms and deep pockets it almost brought a tear to my eyes, but you can’t compromise on safety.

Hi there...303 aerospace have a rubber conditioner that extendes the life of the tyres and you can use it on all the window rubber seals. It's really really good.just read the reviews on it.....cya.

Bought my van at three years old, Third service had been carried out couple of months before. I've never liked the arco carrier, in fact hate them, so after about six months of ownership, decided to remove it and put wheel inside van, extra payload with it removed. All three were Hankook tyres the same age the two on axle perfect, although older than the van. When I came to check the spare I was surprised to see the carrier had worn four grooves in the tyre making it dangerous to use, replaced with a budget tyre straight away. Replace axle tyres with Hankooks at van 5th service as the tyres were over six years old.

Thanks Dan, great information, well presented! At the risk of demonstrating a huge amount of ignorance, rather than move the caravan to check around the whole wheel, can you jack the caravan up and spin the wheel to do this? The background to this question is that I have a KoJack levelling system fitted and went to do just this the other day. However, just as the wheel was about to leave the surface the chassis and or body was making such an awful noise I immediately stopped fearing that I was twisting the chassis etc. Should I have expected the noise to be that bad, was there something amiss or should this just not be done? Thanks Dan.

Just watched your video, good clear information. I checked the tyres on my 4 yr. old Bailey, found the word dot code followed by a number of letters but no date code. I found it ok on may car so I'm looking in the right place. Are you aware of any changes to the dating system?

Good Video. My Van is just 3 years old but I should really check the tyre dates, as you said. I don't think they will be much older than the caravan, surely?

Good info Dan, will you change your spare tyre if it's the same age as the road tyres and in good condition?

Thanks Dan, the pressure increases quite quickly when in motion so would you inflate to 60psi or say 55 psi allowing for 5 psi increase when in motion meaning that when travelling they are at the stated pressure?

Hi I'm new to caravaning and I've just checked my tyres, both tyres on the caravan are in date, but I've taken the spare off to check and it's out of date, the digits are 5107 so as your video that's 51st week in 2007, but it's in perfect condition and not been used as it has the red band in the tread . So as a spare would you use it or get it renewed. My caravan is a 2009 bailey pageant provence series 7.
@TheTrudgians
@TheTrudgians 3 месяца назад
Hi, well I would highly recommend you change it. As of today, that tyre is nearly 17 years of age. Sure, it may never have been used, it wouldnt have been in direct sunlight but it would have had road muck, salt, water, hot and cold changes in temperature. As mentioned in this video, tyres usually do not wear out on a caravan, their condition rapidly deteriorates. I simply wouldn't put my trust in a tyre of that age, after all its the ONLY part of your caravan that touches the floor.

@@TheTrudgians ok thank you for your advice, I've taken the spare off as I've decided to put it in my car boot for future trips as getting it off from underneath the van wasn't great and that was in the storage yard so I dread to think whats it like on a road.
@rhinogooner
@rhinogooner 2 года назад
The only thing you didn’t mention was put wheel covers when parked up. I was told to do this because my van is on the end of the line in the storage yard so when the sun is rising the off side tyre get the full blast of the sun till it goes over the top of the van at midday. Do you have any thoughts on this?

Good advice as ever - as a single-axle bloke there is no margin for shortcuts. BUT, I've followed you since I bought my first 'van in 2014 when you were setting off yourself, and forgave you when you ventured into commission sales and told Me to buy caravan pads for £50, presumably on commission. Health drinks at £30 a pop - do you not feel you're selling your soul - just a bit?
@TheTrudgians
@TheTrudgians 2 года назад
Hi Steve, Sponsors to our channel allow me to carry on and create more content, its simple economics. Having had zero income for 9 months due to ill health, you will be seeing alot more sponsored videos on this channel in the near future. Just to clarify, the caravan pads, were not a commission based sale, i simply received a set for free and I completed a review. As I have always said, if the product / service work for me, i will share it - the pads did solve a problem for me, and therefore I shared it. Sponsors are also in that same vein. Yfood is a great example. For my 16 tables i take in the morning, I need a meal and a side effect of this medication is my appetite is not 1/5th of what it was. this product has been a godsend, and as i stated, solved a problem for me. I hope that clarifies my position. Take care Dan

Have a look at Black circles - they seem to be fairly priced right now, so make sure you check the “reinforced” icon or go for commercial tyres. Hope that helps. 👍
