Tyron bands for caravan tyres offer run flat protection for standard caravan tyres. In this video I show what Tyron bands are, how they work and how they are fitted to standard steel or alloy caravan wheels.
Tyron bands offer tyre safety when towing on any journey and can help protect your caravan in the event of a flat tyre

Hi TravelingK and The Trudgians, both great video’s and watch all your content, (I’m in NZ living in my Luna lexon full time) but I just wanted to say maybe a pressure monitor would be better as TravelingK’s tyre didn’t come off the rim!

Hi Dan, I am a recent subscriber to your excellent channel. We have recently purchased our first ever caravan. I am an RAC Patrol in my 30th year. I thought I would just share my experience of caravan punctures, I have changed a few on the side of the M5 over the years. For me the biggest issue far more important than the Tyron band issue is the stupid stowage system for the spare. It's an absolute killer to get off the cage as can seen on the video from New Zealand. The wheel is open to the elements and corrodes and rusts. My advice put the wheel inside the van, forget the cage system under the van. Also all the damage caused in the video was a direct result of running the tyre flat and "shredding" it Tyron bands would have made no difference. I love your blogs and your family can't wait for our first trip in our brand new Swift! Stew and Deb.
@TheTrudgians
@TheTrudgians 6 лет назад
Hi Stew, Thanks for your comment, i agree that outside wheel carrier is terrible, Tom & I struggled so much to get it out & off. It was a real pain. The damage on K's video was terrible and I suppose what would have helped her more would have been a TPMS system, where as the Tyron band would just allow her to maintain some control whilst it was flat. Enjoy your trip in your new caravan, and I hope you have many more adventures - not on the hard shoulder of the M5. (We spent our honeymoon on the M5 hard shoulder...) Dan

In over 20 years of caravanning iv'e had two blow outs. One was on a busy stretch of the A1 and the tyre completely disintegrated and smashed a small hole into the underside of the van. The last blowout was a few years ago with Tyron bands fitted. Not only did the tyre blow / go down gracefully, there was no damage to either the van or the tyre AND it allowed me to drive to a safer place on a very busy road. Hopefully, they will never be used by the majority of folk but if an incident occurs I guarantee that when an issue arises it does so with minimum of fuss. Just had a pair fitted to my new van we picked up late last year. Worth the money and great peace of mind imo. Thanks for the video.

Hi Dan We have recently returned to caravanning after quite a few years and this was one of the first things I specified when picking up my new van. Always used them on previous vans. Although never been unfortunate enough to have a blow out I know people who have and there caravan end up on its side and caused significant damage to the car too. God informative video.

Hi Dan new Sub here. I have had Tyron bands now for about 5 years fitted on the same van, I had new tyres fitted at home at the start of the season (2019) & when I told the fitter that I had Bands he told me that he couldn't replace as he didn't have the kit to take the off so that he could fit new tyres. But I had the foresight of this incase of this ever happening & had purchased a Portable Removal Kit not long after I had first had them fitted & I was amazed at how easy the fitter handle fitted my replacements using the instruction provided in the Kit, So with that in Mind any tyre fitter can do the Job as you know that we do get to some remote areas :) Thank Ray.

Dan, I had a tyre failure with the Coachman last year. I was on my way home on the M62 westbound and I'd just passed junction 27 (a stone's throw from the IKEA store) so I wasn't too far form home. The tyre stayed on the rim but it had disintegrated so a Tyron band wouldn't have made any difference. I was lucky in that there was no other damage. Once I fitted the spare (with the help of the RAC - I didn't have a suitable wheel wrench at the time), I had the tyres replaced at the soonest opportunity and I have a wheel wrench in the caravan. The Lunar is going in for a service and will have both tyres replaced at the same time.

Hi Dan, Our previous caravan was a single axle Lunar Delta & we had it fitted with puncture seal which is well known among motorcyclists, it will not stop ypu getting a puncture but it will stop it totally deflating and only costs around £10.00p per wheel. Another option though good video. Craig

We had dealer fitted Tyron bands on our last two caravans. The only real problem was finding an approved fitter to replace the tyres as more were closing than opening at that time. I'd still recommend them.

They are an excellent safety for a blowout, you do need to check if you are going abroad if they are legal, I had a blow out in Italy just outside of Latina and the garage refused to fit the tyers to the wheels with the band fitted as it is classed as an illegal modification, the Italian Carabinieri state police said they had to be removed from both wheels if i want to carry on, they were removed but useless afterwards. You do not argue with the State Police local police yes but not the State Police. Many thanks for all the tips you give, as it has saved me some grief on a few things from she who must be obeyed.
@dukenukem5768
@dukenukem5768 6 лет назад
They sound like jobsworths. Hard to imagine they are illegal anywhere - why? True that Tyron bands are a pain in the what-not for tyre fitters and I expect he did not want the job, and his friend the policeman played along. Just my theory.

Hi Dan I have had these fitted to my previous caravan, a Compass Magnum, and new ones fitted to my Lunar Clubman SI. I really recommend Tyronbands as they are a great safety feature and can be swapped caravan to caravan if the wheel sections are the same. One further benefit of fitting the bands is that if you do suffer a blow out or bad puncture you can continue your journey, albeit at a very slow speed to a safer location where you can change the wheel and tyre in safety, because the tyre remains on the wheel. With regards to tyre changes, Tyronbands come with a kit that includes an extra extra long hex key and instructions for tyre fitters for emergencies. For normal tyre replacement I use the company that fitted them originally. You mentioned a discount on insurance; this has proved not to be the case with The Caravan & Motorhome Club insurance. I find this strange as having seen a caravan at my dealer after suffering a blow out, the cost to repair the caravan would have been huge.

I had Tyron bands fitted to my new motorhome only a month ago.I think it is well worth the £300 for peace of mind after viewing a motorhoe on RU-vid having a blow out at speed. Apart from the potential damage, it is likely to lose control of the vehicle which doesn't bare thinking about the consequences of that. When ordering Tyron bands you must mention if PTMS valves are fitted. I have 15in. wheels with Peugeot factory fitted PTMS valves and to allow for the valves inside the wheel rim 14in. bands have to be fitted, and extended fastening bolts, to allow space for the Tyron bands to fit allowing sufficient gap when fastenings are connected.

OK, thnkas for the informative videos, they're getting more and more professional. I have a challenge for you. Some time ago I had a caravan with an extractor fan in it. It got dirty so I thought take out the fan and clean it? Yess not ssoo ssimple. It was an Omnivent. I removed the grill from inside and found a centre bolt which I undid and removed the fan,. Then when trying to refit it found that it wouldnt screw up. Anyway How do you clean and omnivent. ( I now have a more modern one ) so its probably easier. ;-)

Another great informative video Dan Had them fitted just last weekend by Hometyres - they care to storage park and fitted new tyres and Tyron bands and balanced etc. About £69 a wheel plus cost of tyres After a service I needed new tyres so thought may as well take the opportunity and have them fitted Extra cost but well worth it when you think of the alternative consequences Maybe need to mention that you get a “kit” with them ( basically a special Allen key)to take with you so that if you go to a non Tyron dealer ( say abroad ) they can remove them. That way you can get a repair and have them refitted once back home Regards Howard

Watched the Travelling K video and that should be enough to persuade anyone to get Tyron - although I suspect her tyres were well past useful life. A little concerned how he jacked the van tho - maybe he caused some pipe damage jacking in the wrong place?

I recently watched a very old episode of Top Gear from the 80’s (back when TG was good and not just 3 plonkers messing around!) and they went on about this problem then. Caravan wheel rims don’t have the little indent near the edge that the tyre beads sit in as they have on car wheel rims. This is why you don’t need tyre bands on cars or motor homes. I can’t believe that the caravan industry hasn’t come up with a proper solution in 30 years!! They just need to make the rims like car ones and the problem would be solved. I guess if they did, they would no longer be able to sell yet another expensive bit of kit. Lol I’m getting to be a right old cynic in my old age!

I understand that modern alloy wheels used on caravans do have this feature and hence tyron bands not needed on modern alloy van wheels.
@jayhorri1584

I understand they will prevent the tyre coming off the wheel but not that they stop the tyre from coming apart and damaging the caravan. I thiink a TPMS system is essential but these less so.

@thedicksons1284

Thanks again Dan for another great video. I personally, would not invest in these bands because they will do nothing to prevent a blow out or reduce the risk of having a blow out. A blow out is likely to be a sudden catastrophic loss of air which is likely to shred the tyre but these might be useful if you had a slow loss of pressure to prevent the tyre running off the rim. To be honest, I think any good driver would recognise a tyre issue whilst driving with either increased road noise or handling changes but i guess everything helps. Its beyond me why it takes a specialist to screw on the bands and undo the bands so i think they have set themselves up with a nice little earner. I check my pressures regularly, including the spare, and at every stop on a trip. I also feel the wheels with the back of my hand to check for any increased heat which could signal a seized brake or bearing issue and I examine the tyres inner and outer surfaces to look for cracks or bubbling which could lead to tyre failure although most punctures or blowouts are probably caused by hitting debris on the road. I guess it doesn't help that my kids think I'm a "final destination" guy where i see potential problems around every corner lol Modern alloys are also prone to cracking although that's not such a problem with our great, pothole free, roads but I also take my wheels off regularly and check them inside and out for any damage . Been caravanning now for a couple of years and I've picked up so many great hints and tips from you over those 2 years although the freeze dried helium tablets didn't quite work as well as I expected but they did improve my singing voice. Awra best from sunny Isle of Bute and keep up the good work.
@dukenukem5768
@dukenukem5768 6 лет назад
I don't believe it is necessarily the blow-out that shreds the tyre, but the subsequent running until you stop. A blow out can be a relatively small patch opening up. It is minimising the damage during that bit of subsequent running that the Tyron is meant for. As for recognising a tyre issue while driving, it is not so obvious when it is on the caravan, especially on roads which are rough anyway (plenty of those these days - try in Monmouthshire). I first noticed a tyre deflation when the car was needing more pulling effort (and I have a powerful car); I thought maybe the caravan brakes had seized on. The tyre was completely flat but the Tyron band had kept it on the wheel, no other damage.

Hi Dan. We have them fitted to our van. How good they are I don't know but hopefully they would help in the event of a puncture. My main concern with them has always been what to do if you have a puncture abroad where it may be more difficult to have a tyre replaced in the event of a failure. Also, I read somewhere years ago that the wheels should be balanced if you have Tyron bands. What are your thoughts? Good video, though, as I have never really understood how they worked.

Some valid points there Steve, from what i was shown it certify didn't look like the wheel needs balancing, but I could be wrong. The issue with getting a tyre off and replaced while abroad im sure will be covered by someone soon - but a great point. Thanks Dan

Hi Dan. I'm considering these, but have heard that fitters in Europe won't touch them. We're planning a tour there. I tried contacting the Tyron manufacturer to ask about it but no reply. Did you get any info on this? Also, we've got a microtourer that weighs 750 kg max, so not sure how useful the bands would be. Any thoughts? All the best. I'm brand new to all this and your videos are great.

Hi Pete, i understand that when your purchase the Tyron bands, you get a kit that allows you to remove them if you cannot find a Tyron band specialist. ive seen on other comments on this video, that others were in exactly the same situation. Hope that helps Dan
@dukenukem5768
@dukenukem5768 6 лет назад
I would have thought that a kit to allow you to remove the band would also allow you to refit the band. I expect those European fitters refuse to touch them as they are such a struggle to work with - which would even apply to their removal in order to replace a tyre. The video did not really make the point that to change a tyre which already has bands, you must first remove the bands to remove the old tyre, and then re-fit the bands after fitting the new tyre.
@simonbaxter8001
@simonbaxter8001 4 года назад
Not personally convinced. If they are that good and aid safety, why are they not fitted as standard? and why don't we have them fitted to the car (which has a much higher speed rating)? Plus I've seen a few tyres that have blown and in all cases, the tyre bead was still tightly attached to the rim! It doesn't stop the tread and sidewall portion of the type from departing the bead!

Is there a way caravan wheels can be made so you don't need Tyron bands? I wonder....
@TimsPracticalPrepping
@TimsPracticalPrepping 6 лет назад
Please see my other post here. The caravan manufacturers could very easily make their wheel rims in the same way as car wheel ones. This would make this 'elastoplast' or 'bandaid' type fix unnecessary. I remember having a similar rant following one of Dan's other videos about accidents caused by caravans unhitching themselves from towbars when driving. Why hasn't the industry found a failsafe mechanism for that? And why don't they use car type rims?...it does make you wonder!
@dukenukem5768
@dukenukem5768 6 лет назад
@1:10, why not show the "tyre" coming right off the wheel? The "gap" is called the "well" BTW. I don't think it would be worth retro-fitting to an existing tyre, only if you are having a new tyres. Re specialist/approved fitters, the special tools required are only the compressor to pull whole tyre down to expose the whole well, seen at @3:27, and the long Torx or Allen extension seen @3:46. I had new tyres fitted unaware I had Tyron bands; the fitter took ages to do the job, he struggled. I don't think he had the compressor - maybe he wasn't approved but it isn't rocket science.

Got them fitted to my van and tyre pal had a friend who had blown out in the middle of the m5 the damage was catastrophic the tyre burst through the caravan floor ejected the fridge that was over the wheel arch and completely removed all the van electrics that where also over the wheel arch I have now rerouted my wiring !!! On most caravans it's over the wheel arch I actually commented on travelling ks blog about age related damage to caravan tyres my van tyres are 5 years old and going in the bin at the end of this year its also a good idea to move a van when it's in storage so the down force weight of the caravan is not being transferred through the same part of the tyre i remove my tyres in winter time and put the van on axel stands
