Even commercials were full productions with singing and even sometimes dancing (the cashier might start singing and the butcher, customers, and stock person would start singing backup or dance ballet style)
Is the ol’ nostalgia feeling. We’re getting older & remember an era were good TV shows made us feel good. We’re now living is dark times were TV shows suck, living in an era were politically speaking, is getting worse which effects society. In those times some of us were kids less responsibilities living the child life. Now we’re living in harsh times were the country is trillions in debt, lack of good paying jobs while prices increase & again, affecting society.
I grew up during the 90s and remember falling asleep on the couch next to my dad as he sat and watched late night reruns of this show. Sometimes I miss those times so badly it hurts.
I love Seinfeld Frasier and friends but Cheers hits different to me it’s so funny I never get tired of watching it tbh it’s just so classic I always watch the classics they’re so much better
I used to hear this song when I was around 7 (back in 1988) from my parents' tv in their room and I never realized how comforting it was until now at 39.. it made me feel safe.
Just binge watched Friends on Netflix and seeing the episode when Joey was watching the Cheers intro in London and he got homesick brought back some good ‘ol memories
It’s crazy to think that Frasier (the spinoff of this show) crossed over with Caroline in the City which crossed over with Friends and yet there’s that episode of Friends you mentioned of Joey watching the Cheers intro.
The villain pub theme on hishe is such a great tribute to this. Give it a watch if you’ve never heard it. That’s how I re-discovered this theme. I was born in 81 so I never watched this show when it was on tv!
Christopher Valdes Thats what growing up is all about. To every young man or old man they all find out about this at some point and when it hits them. It gets em good.
I'm 12, my dad and I used to watch this when I was little. I was watching TV then heard the ice king singing it. I remember complaining when my dad watched this but now the show is great.
This brings me back to a much simpler time... I remember waiting for my dad to come home from work and I would sit on his lap and watch shows like cheers, taxi, night court.. I didn't care what it was as long as I got to spend time with him.. RIP daddy I miss you tons
buddyknavery it's because you miss your childhood. Sitting on the rug watching TV. The beginning of our youth. We all want to go back to that warmth and wonder and fun. It's not gay at all. It's called being human. Fucking a right. Who knows.....maybe we'll do it all over again. I miss being 18 in 1993 and watching the Sci fi channel on rainy nights. You ever miss being 10 in 1985 watching amazing stories on TV? Or night court? We were kids in some of the best decades with the best shit. I hear you buddy. Loud and clear.
Renji Abarai Maybe, but I always feel that "real bars" don't need TV adverts. Corporate/Commercial Franchise bars do but not special places where everybody knows your name, not your credit score.
Its actually a really sad song, its talking about men who hate their life and want to just go somewhere where they won't feel hurting, and that friend is alcohol.
if you think of it as a way to get away from the everyday struggles of life and relax with your friends, then it is a happy song. it all depends on if you are optimistic about it, cause I am
"Cheers" seems so quaint by 2021 standards. But it was downright revolutionary for 1982. There had never been anything quite like it on TV before. And so, if you look at older, classic television and movies and wonder what all the fuss was about, you should always ask yourself if anyone had ever done that before. Even this intro right here is quite extraordinary. It doesn't show the actors. It depicts the IDEA of the show, which was bigger than anyone on it. Yes, it's about Sam and Diane's Will They / Won't They dilemma, but it's also about why we need bars. They're not just places to consume alcohol. The patrons and employees at a bar can be a sort of second family for regulars like Cliff and Norm. The intro also gave the show a sense of timelessness, and so it still holds up today.
This reminds me of the times as a kid growing up at my grandma’s house...she used to watch this all the time! It makes me so sad! 😢😢 R.I.P. Granny!!! ❤️❤️
I'm 39 and I don't believe any other song that exists gives me nostalgia as much as this one

i am 34 i am 80's kid my self i was born in 81 i was 3 years old when this show came on.i would love to be around in the 80's just to see what was life back then.
This intro and song could most likely be the greatest opening/ theme song to a sitcom ever. A few days ago I got finished watching every episode of this show on netflix for the first time and after watching it for a year I got to the final episode and then I came very close to crying because first of all the finale was spectacular and second I felt very sad to see sam and the gang go. This show was just incredible and I am watching friends right now and that is also a fantastic/ funny show but for me cheers will always be my favorite show of all time and it will also always be better than the bad sitcoms we have on tv today like family guy and nicky, ricky, dicky, and dawn in my opinion. By the way in my opinion family guy is a kids show just with a bunch of inappropriate jokes thrown in. You will always be my favorite show cheers:-)
+Samuel Black@ fair play to you!! For me personally, Cheers will always be the greatest sitcom of all time; the way the characters ebbed & flowed.... the production values... you just don't get to see that now -- as good as 'Friends' was, & 'Big Bang' is currently, neither can match the majesty of Cheers. I've always maintained that the greatest comedic moments in 'Cheers' were ad-libbed -- the actors were simply SO comfortable in their respective roles that most of the comedy unfolded naturally.
Nah man, imo Seinfeld is the greatest. Cheers was great, as was Friends, but the writers on Seinfeld were at a level far beyond anything before or since - at least until Larry David left the show (at the end of season 7).
I didn’t even watch this show and this theme song has been in my head non stop for a week. I finally had to google what show it came from and listen to it lol. Someone must have watched it when I was young. It’s definitely catchy
Theme's been stuck in my head all day today! I never watched the show either (though I caught bits and pieces), but I loved that intro. Reminds me of my childhood during the 80s
The problem is that nowadays, so many shows are filmed after the style of reality TV, and have "cold" openings. As a result, they can't have theme songs of any kind, much less good ones.
Tv really wasn't better "back then". You're just nostalgic. The walking dead, game of thrones, breaking bad, etc are all obviously superior to anyone that isn't biased and looking through rose colored glasses so dark it looks like someone lit a road flare.
callowaymotorcompany Okay...the cinematography may not have been great back then, but the writing and the ability to entertain was still there. It was a different era and you cannot say that one was better than the other, it's just different. Obviously, you are the one being biased, since you are applying a value judgement to television by saying one is superior to the other.
***** Um, I don't exactly have a dog in this fight as it relates to television in general, even though my status as a 90's kid is quickly placing me into a position of being able to use a word like "nowadays." Just don't get me started on the CARTOONS of today; I wouldn't be surprised if there was a relationship between the amount of hours children spend watching Adventure Time and the development of childhood autism.
My mom and I use to go to my grandparents house every sunday , I knew it was time to go home when this show would come on . Even though I was sad I always loved watching the intro. Whenever I’m down or need a pick me up I come here . We’re Always Glad You Came ♥️
Love this song. Brings back good memories of my childhood.....But now as an adult, most of the time I just wanna get away somewhere that nobody knows my name
Something about this song just hit you right in the gut. Everytime I hear this, it reminds me of me grown up watching this with my dad. One of the greatest sitcoms and one of the best opening songs for a sitcom. Iconic and nostalgic.
An absolutely great sitcom. S1-3 are the best, with Sam & Diane, Coach, Carla, Norm and Cliff. S4-5 were great as well, between Ted Danson & Shelley Long, they really held the show together after Nick's passing. We miss you, Coach!!
Always thought that last guy in the song with his drunk face was Stan Laurel 😁. I was 4 years when this show came up. My parents watched it in the 80's. Every time when I hear this intro, it reminds of the time without internet and smartphone. Greetings from Holland.
Its sad but the real Cheers bar is closing its door on August 30th, 2020 due to Covid19 and not being able to rework his lease with the owners. At least we have the show to remind us.

Freshman in High School when this debuted. I was a fan immediately. After Shelley Long left I was blown away by Kirstie Ally with that long and thick brown hair. Beautiful.
The 80s almost seems like a different world. I feel like I can go back there for a moment when I hear stuff like this. I can see my dad cracking a beer in his recliner with the itchy fabric and gaudy pattern. Cheers beaming from a giant wooden box TV that had terrible reception when the weather was bad. I'd fall asleep on the couch and wake up to hear him laughing at David Letterman's show. He'd always yell at me to go to bed when he realized I was still up LOL. I'm glad I have those memories.
I came across the Cheers marathon on CMT a channel that I don’t get on a usual basis. But I was checking out what would be something I’d really like to watch & suddenly I see Cheers > the program that I used to watch with my mother & siblings & we got enjoyment out of it. Yay! Cheers is running for quite awhile. Awesome! Thank you to whoever decided to put this program on & that I really could watch again & throughly enjoy 😊! Right on 👍Really enjoy the cast/characters playing on it. But thinking too, about Kirstie Alley(aka) Rebecca Howe, who also was on the program. So sad that she’s gone so soon > thus can’t re-watch these episodes herself & reflect back. To all who used to watch this program > ENJOY IT! 😑👍
Rember used to watch this show with my dad, he died in 86' when i was 5. Shedding a tear listening to this theme song but at same time gives me some solace.
Thank You, Applebees, For Introducing The Cheers Sitcom, And It's Theme Song, To A Whole New Generation. I'm Sure That The Sales Of The Cheers Complete Series DVD Sets Are Going To Surge, For A While.
I remember when I was about 6 and I would sneak out of my bed room and into the living room when my dad was asleep on the couch and see this intro on the television. When I tried asking my dad what the t.v show was where everyone was at the bar he had no idea and just said..WHAT? in an almost angry tone which silenced me because I felt stupid for asking him. Great show.
Hey I rember wondering what a show was that was on and I asked my dad what it was and he told me it was called junk and I responded what is junk about lol.
I remember this theme song very well and I've seen this show but it's quite a long time. My babysitter used to watch this show and I love this theme song and i understood the lyrics, I was just in pre-school when i saw this show. I love a lot of the 80's TV show theme intro as well as the show i used to watch on TVO in the evening I love the older stuff a lot more then the up to date shows, i had the full version of this song before my computer crashed a long time ago.
Making your way in the world today Takes everything you got Taking a break from all your worries It sure would help a lot Wouldn't you like to get away? Sometimes you want to go Where everybody knows your name And they're always glad you came You want to be where you can see The troubles are all the same You want to be where everybody knows your name You want to go where people know The people are all the same You want to go where everybody knows your name
Here in Portugal, Cheers and Seinfeld were the best sitcoms i`ve watch. Alongside two from BBC. Allo Allo and Blackadder. I could watch then over and over again.
