Video tutorial and patterns for the 2 Chenille scarfs featured in video using Bernat Velvet yarn. Patterns copyrighted to Knittycat's Knits.
Abbreviations: K=knit; P=purl; SKP=slip 1 stitch, knit next stitch, pass the slipped stitch over; YF=bring yarn to front
Red Rib Stitch Scarf
Materials: 1 skein (10.5 oz, 300 g) of Bernat Velvet 100% polyester yarn (Cabernet shade), US needles size 8 knitting needles, scissors, tape measure or ruler.
Cast on 28 stitches. Then do K1, P1 rib in each row until work measures 5 ft (60 inches) or desired length. Then do regular bind off (or can bind off in pattern). Finished scarf measurements for red scarf in video: 7 inches width x 60 inches length.
Gray Turkish Stitch Scarf
Materials: 1 skein (10.5 oz, 300 g) of Bernat Velvet 100% polyester yarn (Vapor gray shade), US needles size 10 knitting needles, scissors, tape measure or ruler.
Cast on 26 stitches. Then do Turkish stitch as follows:
Row: K1, *YF, SKP. Repeat from * until last stitch, then K1.
Repeat this row until work measures 5 ft (60 inches) or desired length. Then do regular bind off. Finished scarf measurements for red scarf in video: 8 inches width x 60 inches length.
Optional for noth scarfs: add tassles (at least 3 inches long) on each end of scarf (using a crochet hook, US size G or larger)

I love this pattern. I’m no expert on knitting just picked it back up after a few years but I have done a few difficult stitches in the past. This one is a challenge but I believe I can figure it out if I keep trying. My issue is I end up with one extra stitch. I can’t figure out how. I started with 30 and now I have 31, for example. Thanks so much!

Thanks, @kayyama5602. Glad you are trying this and are reaching out. I am not sure if you are experiencing this extra-stitch when doing the plain rib pattern (K1, P1) or the Turkish stitch pattern. With the plain rib, pay close attention at the start of each row. Sometimes, the way that first stitch sits on the needle, it can appear to be 2 stitches and if you knit them as 2 stitches, then that is one way you could end up with an extra stitch. With the Turkish st, the extra-stitch may occur if you do an extra yarn over somewhere in the row; although it is just a one-row repeat, this stitch can be a bit challenging bec of the yarn over and SKP. Thanks so much! The only special thing that I did was to use a crochet hook to weave in the yarn tails (since yarn was too big for my tapestry needle).😊

I would really have liked to do it but unfortunately I have never knit in the Continental style except for when I knit fair isle style. But I have been getting several requests to show it in that style and so plan to practice it over the next couple weeks and hope I can demo my videos in both styles in the near future. Hi Knittycat, so I started this (and emailed you) almost a year ago! Lol. I just picked it up again, am loving it, but am nearing the end and realized I don't know how to bind off in pattern...Can you please tell me how to do this? Thanks!

So sorry that I missed your email about this back then. Glad you picked it up back up though. If you are doing the Turkish stitch, then you can just do a regular bind off. If you are doing the K1, P1 rib and wish to bind off in pattern, then it is quite easy. On the bind off row, you would knit the first st. Then since the next stitch is a purl, you purl that stitch, then pass the knit st over the purl stitch (similar motion to a regular bind off). Then, since the next stitch is a knit, you would knit it and then pass the purled stitch over it. And so on...Hope this helps. I don't think I have a video demo of binding off in pattern but think I will make one in the upcoming weeks (as I am sure there may be other knitters who have this same question). Hi Sonia, glad you tried this. If you use sharp scissors, the ends should cut cleanly when attaching the tassels. But over time, they can fray/splay out a little and get fuzzy. It will still look good though. I feel like the older Bernat Chenille yarn used to a bit thicker & than the currently available yarn. But I still love the luxurious feel of this yarn and the scarf is so plush and comforting. I hope you enjoy it for years to come 😊

Superb video. I have bought the same from Amazon. But I m confused about the needle size. I want to make a sweater for my 6 year old son. Would you please help me in choosing the right needle size and number of stitches as well. Waiting for your help.

Thanks, Mehnaz! Happy you liked it and are going to try the pattern for a sweater for your son. This Bernat Chenille yarn is quite thick and I would recommend using a US size 9 or 10 needle (5.5 or 6.0 mm) for it. To determine the number of stitches you need to cast on for a sweater, you would need to figure out the gauge. So would suggest, knitting a small swatch: for this, cast on a few stitches with the yarn and using the size 9 or 10 needle (knit it in the pattern that you want to use for the sweater and so cast on the number of stitches for swatch accordingly). Knit for a few rows (say to about 1 in in height). Then measure the width of the piece. For example, if you cast on 10 stitches and your piece measures 2 inches in width, then if you need to knit say about 16 inches for the back of the sweater, then you would cast on (10 x 16) divided by 2 = 80 sts. Totally a hypothetical example but hoping you get the idea. I don't have a sweater pattern with this yarn (or these stitches) but I am sure you will be able to knit one quite easily and it will be a very thick, plush sweater. Hope this helps. Hi Hasan, for the red scarf (rib stitch), I cast on 28 stitches with US size 8 needles (5 mm). For the gray scarf (Turkish stitch), I cast on 26 stitches with US size 10 needles (6 mm). Great video! I was wondering if your velvet yarns are size 6 super bulky? And is it okay to use 10mm needles for this?

Thanks, Del! And great question. Actually, I do think the Bernat velvet yarns I used are super bulky and actually the recommended needle size is US 10.5 (6.5 mm). I guess you could use a 10 mm needle for this, which would be a US size 15 needle. But the knit will be quite looser and may have a more airy feeling (if that is what you were going for). Yes, size 15 needles will give too lose a knit. I think size 10 or 10.5 needles would be ideal for these patterns.

Can you please post a video showing how to undo a knit for the Turkish pattern??? every time I make a mistake I wind up having to undo ALL of my knitting and start all the way from making the slip knots!!

Thanks for the suggestion! Will make a video and hope to post it by next week. In the meantime, suggest adding a proactive lifeline after you have knit up some rows. That way, if you need to unravel it, you only need to do it up to the lifeline. I'm having a problem with what looks like snagged stitches and extra yarn after working a few rows. No matter how taut I keep my yarn, this keeps occurring.

Hi Mary Ann, sorry to hear this is happening. I would try holding the yarn a little looser rather than taut. Also, the extra stitches could be happening if you don't take the yarn to the back after doing a purl stitch (there may be other reasons too though). Not sure if you are experiencing these issues with this same bulky yarn or if using a skinnier yarn. If it is the latter, then would suggest trying a thicker/bulkier yarn. Hope that helps 😊

I am having the same problem also. I even tried just using garter stitch only, keeping the tension taut and needles close together. It still looks snagged in a few places. I’m very disappointed with the yarn because I love the feel of it and wanted it to work.

I received my yarn and am having a problem. I want to do the turkish stitch but keep making mistakes. I want to add a lifeline but what is a tapestry and what one would you .recommend. Thank you

Hi Rosa, sorry to hear about the issues but if you keep at it, I am sure it will work. About your question, a tapestry needle is just a thick, blunt needle with a wide eye, through which you can pass a thicker thread, like knitting yarn. They come in different sizes, in steel or in plastic, and can be straight or bent at an angle at the sowing tip. Typically a 2-2.5 inch long needle will work (the ones I have/show in my videos are steel and straight). It helps to have a tapestry needle to insert lifelines or to weave in yarn tails (at cast on/bind off or whenever you join yarn). They should be available in any shops that settle knitting supplies (or online; link to one such example in Amazon: www.amazon.com/Hekisn-Large-Eye-Stainless-Stringing-Finishing/dp/B07SSQX7VH). To insert lifelines, check out my video at ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hLdNBLuC1sY.html. Hope this helps. Even if there may be a few mistakes in knitting, the chunkiness of this yarn will hide them 😊

I have decided it is working on my nerves too much with that stitch so I am going with the tweed stitch and it is doing much better for me. I am going to order those tapestry needles from Amazon because I want to do a lifeline on this pattern so I don't have to rip it all out if i make a mistake. Why is it that these people keep saying so simple so simple. In every project. Making it clear they that while they my be experts they have no teaching skills. If it's as simple as they say, u don't need a tutorial with the example goes at the speed of light which makes the hole video useless. Why use tools u don't intend your audience to use, just for the sake of speed. It's annoying when hobbyist try to turn themselves into teachers and are only hobbyist.

Velvet yarns are known to be difficult to work with and most people who try knitting with velvet yarn tend to be advanced knitters. I am new to knitting and I knew that it would be a challenge to work with velvet when I picked mine up, but I desperately wanted to make something soft for my boyfriend. Her demo is sufficient since they're all repeats and she's just demonstrating knit patterns for velvet yarns which are rare. If u need to start from scratch, there are other videos showing cast-on/cast-off, knit, purl, and other stitches. They're very basic stuff, you can learn it in like an hour.
