i am growing Cherimoya in The Netherlands. It has been -4C or 25Flast winter and its doing very well. Its loosing all leafes but it doesnt seems to be an issue since they will all come back in the sprng. I have grown about 300 trees from seed and 2 of them are doing well through the winters. discrded the rest :P
I’ve read that cherimoya don’t really have issues growing in the heat. The real issue is losing the fruit on the tree because temps over 80°f cause fruit drop. Probably the reason there are no cherimoya orchards in Florida like there is near Santa Barbara, California, Chile, and spain. Would be awesome to see a video disproving that the high temperature theory!
Mate, that's only 37.7 C! We had 48.6 and my seedling Cherimoya in pots were fine! I'm still interested in what you have to say, but 100f is extreme heat? C'mon. It's hot, but not that hot!
Very interesting! My cherimoya lost all but one leaf in its first winter season here in zone 10. What I’m surprised at is that it has one flower and a few leaf buds but has not leafed out despite the fact we are in mid May. I only planted it about a year ago so I hope it will adjust more and be more aggressive at leafing like yours is
Did you tree adjust? I'm having the same problem now. No leaves. Have had the tree for over a year. Also Zone 10. Don't know If i need more water or fertilizer?
@@jxhide sort of. It did leaf out ok later that year. This winter it didn’t loose all its leaves but it doesn’t have the vigor I would like. I’m not sure if it’s the soil, the lighting or the watering. I’m going to try to improve all. Hope yours kicks in sooner than later.
Looks super healthy Jeff, but then all your plants look great so your feeding regime must be spot on. Doesn't even look as if your cherimoya defoliated at the end of winter as they often do prior to the new growth appearing
Interesting. Good info. I'm in further Norcali, Chico 9a, avos doing great going on 3 yrs but failed at mangos and pineapple. Trying my hand with several diff types of jaboticabas
Both pineapple and mango will probably grow for you in Chico but due to out chilly wet winters they tend to rot out. Easy to correct by using garden phos several times a year. Mangos need to be planted very nearby a south wall and protect it the first couple years. Those huge Mango trees in Fresno are a great example.
@@TropicalGardenGuy You and I went over the Garden phos thing around a yr ago, appreciate that but I can't order it (at least Amazon won't ship it to me, they have it) nor find it locally, maybe Nevada. Also they only list half the ingredients so maybe there's a good reason it's not 'legal' in Cali?
Im in California and I got it from Amazon. With all the goofy laws here who knows. Ive heard that if sold as a fertilizer its legal, but as a systemic fungicide its not.
I planted from seeds a what I thought was Sugar Apple, but I actually think that it is Cherimoya due to rounded leaves. It is now maybe 5 years old. It is in the container and have not fruited. I hope soon!
Nice looking tree. I'm growing paw paw tree in zone 7 east coast. They are related. I really like the large droopy leaves. Are you growing pineapples too? What is the palm with the pinnate leaves in the background that seem like they are about 10 feet tall? And is that you beccariophoenix alfredii to your right in the last shot? It looks like it's gotten huge.
Hmm, Let’s see, In the back ground I have BECCARIOPHOENIX ALFREDII, Chamadorea Elegens, Dyspsis Psmamiphilia , Chytophoenix something or another… Sorry Id have to look at the name tags, but you get the idea
I use organic compost + 15/15/15 npk for my fruits I also. Use what we call minor nutrients(copper iron...) for my trees But for my new cherimoya I'm lost What to use and how to use and when?! Please help me I don't want to waste this legendary tree it's my most precious one in my garden
Great video, Jeff. I live in the Eastbay tri-valley zone 9b. Your videos inspired me to dare growing tropical trees. This time I got a cherimoya from Hime Depot. I wanted to keep it in a container. Would you recommend a type of potting mix that is the most beneficial to it? Thank you and keep it up!
For long term potting I use a mixture of 1/3 peat, 1/3 sand and 1/3 fine perlite or pumice. For a year or less i use Miracle grow moisture control potting mix.
Just pick one up myself. Im in Fresno so just a few hours from you. Im debating on planting it or leaving it in its pot and planting in the spring. What is your thought?
@@TropicalGardenGuy incomplete fertilization means, I need to put more pollen? And thank you so much for taking your time to respond. Very kind of you.
The tree is still young. I’ll be doing an update when it flowers and fruit. I did have a cherimoya many years ago, I had to hand pollinate , but the fruit was quite good!
Just a heads up I doubt it's Vietnamese. Live in Vietnam for a while now and no one sells the fruit or the trees. Untill the last 6 month I hadn't found a tree seller with cerimoya trees for sale, bought two, and not sure I didn't just get hustled or it's a real cerimoya tree.
