My trees are young and the Citrus/Avocado fertilizer at HomeDepot 6-4-6 with micronutrients has worked well, even on vegetables. I spike the tree fertilizer with lawn fertilizer to push new growth on some things like grapes. I use low application rates, the bag rate is often excessive.

@TheBusyGardener
@TheBusyGardener 3 года назад
Thank you! I may do an apple harvest vid, but honestly, it's done by cutting off a fruit, tasting it and seeing if you like it. If it needs more time, give the tree more time. Another easy way to tell is if the seeds are brown (if they are, it's generally ripe)

@Julio's DIY You are way over fertilizing them. You only fertilize fruit trees twice per year with one that has a slow release. Easiest indicator of overfertilizing is if the tree is absolutely infested with aphids.

It looks like your USDA hardiness zone is 9b, similar to us. You can likely grow everything from citrus to stone fruit and apples. It's a good zone to be in! With the apples and stone fruit, you'll want to stick with those cultivars that have a lower chill hour requirement. Plant what you like to eat!

@TheBusyGardener
@TheBusyGardener 4 года назад
Thanks Yin! Some mulch is better than none. In most places the mulch is probably 4-6 inches. Sparse areas, probably 2, and in heavier areas probably 8 inches. Mulch breaking down definitely provides nutrients. Consider creating a compost pile for feeding your trees. It'll be a little high in Nitrogen, but it'll be something.

If you're wanting to encourage lots of vegetative growth and larger size, then give it more Nitrogen. I want to keep my trees at a manageable size, and accomplish this mainly through pruning, but also by limiting the nitrogen. Depends on what you plan with your tree!

Phosphorus and zinc will be where it is placed for years. It will take many years to get into the roots when put on the surface. If you are using bark mulch you will get more than enough K over time from decayed bark, straw, or wood. It is better to dig a 3 to 6" trench several feet around the tree for the Phosphorus then it will feed the tree for years. If it is in a narrow zone it will not be tied up with the calcium in the soil or washed a way. Only nitrogen should be limited to specific times of the year. That is what I learned from getting a soil science degree.

Hi James! When do you notice your trees breaking dormancy? I fertilize in late January because that's usually a couple weeks before my trees start waking up. In your colder climate, that might be a later fertilize date. Still don't fertilize later than the end of June - I imagine you go dormant earlier than we do here in SoCal, so you want your trees winding down as fall approaches.

In March or April
@TheBusyGardener
@TheBusyGardener 5 лет назад
I'd say fertilize early march, late April, late June. From what I see, your 6a USDA hardiness zone's last frost ends in Late march, and returns in late Sept. You want granular/solid fertilizer broken down and available to the trees when they break dormancy, and early enough before they go back to sleep. A shorter window than we have (by 4 months!), but should work well. What are you growing?

So just to confirm, small trees that need to be established- transplanting from pot to ground need high. Nitrogen. When you spoke 6:44 about this in the video I think you accidentally said low nitrogen for non establishment trees. .
@TheBusyGardener
@TheBusyGardener 4 года назад
You're exactly right! Higher Nitrogen for younger trees, then cut the nitrogen back once your trees are at the desired eventual height/structure. Good catch.

You have the thickest mulch in the world ... do you still need fertilizers😲
@TheBusyGardener
@TheBusyGardener 5 лет назад
I take that as a compliment, lol. Yeah, fertilizing with a low N, high PK fertilizer as well as it being rich in humic acid, gives nutrients the mulch may not have in quantity. The mulch breaking down is excellent at supporting the microbial and macrobial activity in the soil.

Explain that wen you first plant your transplant from seed you need a high first number like a 30 10 10, cause you are showing us plant that already fruiting, need to change from nitro to phosphorus in your case, i use a 30 10 10, in the beginning, then after weeks go by I notice the change the the growing stage its starting to flower, now its time to change the numbers from a 30 10 10 To a 10 30 10, growing time ends and the new flowering starts, I've grown 12' marijuana plants by using 30 10 10 while growing switch to a 10 30 10 wen start to flower I have picture if you no believe me I will send you proof, since 1966 I experience growing marijuana still growing now I'm 68 and I'm legal medical marijuana card holders, except for slipping no need 30 10 10 cause the plants a clone by making slipping or buying store bought potted veggies or plants, use more like a 10 30 10 needs more phosphorus than nitrogen, wen I fertilize 2 times a week I grew 8 10 and 12 footers that year, so I know it works beginning 30 10 10 flowering stage 10 30 10, wen time to harvest stop fertilizing one month prior and don't water plant let it suck up everything surrounding it, no matter if its marijuana, fruit, veggies, flower plants all the same n k p

Hey I was wondering why your entire backyard is covered in mulch if it's because you are running a nursery and you sell the fruit trees that you grow or you just have your whole entire yard mulched because you don't like grass?
@TheBusyGardener
@TheBusyGardener 5 лет назад
Hey Matthew! We don't sell any of our trees (or fruit, yet). Our orchard was planted in a spot of our property that was just dirt and rocks. We didn't like the look of it, and since most of the orchard is covered with planted trees, we elected to mulch the whole thing. I'm also counting on the mulch breaking down and fixing the soil with the added organic material. Check out my mulch vid: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-e5tbBTahgho.html

Chemical fertilizer makes your tree/plants dependent on it like a heroine addict , but hey to each their own 🤷‍♂️
@TheBusyGardener
@TheBusyGardener 5 лет назад
Hi Finca, The GroPower fertilizer is largely composed of organic ingredients and other microbial goodies. (gropower.com/product_pages/flower_bloom.htm). In addition, the mulch layer and leaf litter provide tons of natural microbial activity. Lots of worm activity too. What about manufactured fertilizer makes you believe it causes some sort of dependency?

Just planted a backyard orchard (3rd one) I use wood ash and kelp meal with worm castings on a schedule similar to what you recommend. First year Im using composted horse manure when I plant and Neem seed meal for light nitrogen. I don’t know the NPK numbers on them? but this year everything is coming alive 100% success coming out of the winter slumber out of 25 trees. Also I’ll use comfrey and borage as a chop and drop.

I try to keep up with the feeding, not to go to long without feeding them. I really just gave them some watered down miracle grow fertilizer so it wouldn't be to strong for them to handle. Ok I'll check it out (the website). Just plain tap water feedings. Nothing but.

Hmmm. What is the advantage of a fully organic feed? I get why to avoid non-organic pesticides, but fertilizer (especially in slow release form) is taken up in its basic elements with the tree being indifferent about its form.
