Jerry Wolfe, an elder in the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, describes what it was like to grow up in a Cherokee household in the mountains of North Carolina.
This short video segment is part of an episode of the PBS series Exploring North Carolina titled "10,000 Years Before Contact," an original production by UNC-TV, the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, and DTS Software, Inc. It was distributed on DVD in 2010. Funding for this video was provided by the William R. Kenan Jr. Charitable Trust.

I picked wild strawberries when I was young. And huckleberries too,, And picked black berries and sold them to make money in the summers,,,used to get water from the stream. Down the way and drink it right from the stream itself. Thimble berries. And gooseberies. Grew there too, cressy greens. And. Poke salad. Was something we ate. Allot of. And walnuts. Those were good days. Gone by,,,
