CHERRY AUDIO GX-80 (walkthrough & review)
Composer Daniel Willett demonstrates Cherry Audio's new flagship synth the GX-80! The GX-80 combines the Yamaha GX-1 & the Yamaha CS-80 into one very powerful synth!
USE DANIEL'S MUSIC FOR YOUR VIDEOS: www.storyblock...
From Cherry Audio:The Yamaha CS-80 is one of the most coveted polyphonic analog synthesizers ever created. When it was originally released in 1976, there was nothing like it on the market - with features like eight-voice voice assign polyphony, velocity and aftertouch sensitivity, and a massive sound, it truly was a flagship in sound quality, feature set, and build quality. The CS-80 became a legend for its use by Vangelis in the classic sci-fi flick Blade Runner, creating immense and dreamy warbling soundscapes that liberally made use of its very musical and controllable ring modulator. The CS-80 set a new standard in real-time control, and Vangelis took great advantage of the CS-80's bank of arced paddle-style performance controls, as well as the aforementioned keyboard velocity and aftertouch sensitivity.With DSP code programmed by DSP master and frequent collaborator Mark Barton, Cherry Audio's GX-80 emulates all of the sonic and control characteristics of the CS-80 with outstanding accuracy.
Mark's extensive Cherry Audio GX-80 User Guide - 1research of the original CS-80 schematics and design led him back to the CS- 80's predecessor, the mighty GX-1, aka "The Dream Machine" - truly one of the most impressive synthesizers ever conceived.In the 70s and 80s, Yamaha often tested out new technology by creating a large and expensive flagship instrument. Released in 1974, the GX-1 represented the absolute cutting edge of organ and analog synthesizer technology. It was produced in extremely limited numbers (estimated around 20), and cost $50,000 (that's a comfortable house in the early 70s). This put it far out of reach for most musicians, but it was famously used by Stevie Wonder, Keith Emerson, Benny Andersson of ABBA, and a little later, by John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin.As its name implies, the Cherry Audio GX-80 is not purely a CS-80 emulation. Though the Yamaha GX-1 and CS-80 are similar under the hood, the GX-1 is roughly equivalent to two complete CS-80's in one (real big) box.-

Dude, that piece is awesome. That second section! I'm listening to this on a modest set of JBL 3 MKII monitors, and those C / A-flat / B-flat / F bass notes .... I could feel them at 7 feet away, at a volume that wouldn't wake the lady of the house. WELL DONE!

I have to say, listening to this I think Cherry are upping their game. Sounds bigger and fuller than their older stuff. I still think Cherry makes their stuff sound more "mixed" than just raw analog, kind of like Arturia does. Hope they keep upping the game. One thing, their SEM is a wet, unlit, soggy candle compared to GForce OB-E. Very worth trying out.

Hi, This is a very helpful video, What Mac computer are you using you have so many instances of the GX-80 in this track, and no issue ? I'm guessing it's one of the newer Apple Silicon chip based Macs. , I can barely run two instances of the GX-80 on my 20 core, Intel PC, before the CPU goes into overload, I need to move to a new Mac Apple Silicon machine next year 😀 Thanks

I’m glad that it was helpful! I just upgraded from a 2013 I7 iMac to a new Mac Studio M1 Max. Even still I ended up freezing a few tracks in the demo but most of the tracks were being played without freezing while I was also recording my screen and camera.

I am being honest here which is not always a good thing but I am not keen on plug ins (I only use actual synths). I have plugged into pc from mixer as audio interface and record uncomressed direct to PC. I feel this gives a mch better sound and clearer and sounds with more strengh. I did like yor composition though but genuinely belive it would have sounded even better with actual synths

How are 25 tracks possible, with this VST? Do you record one track at a time and convert it to audio afterward? With certain presets such as pad-sounds, I cannot even lay down a single track without a sunami of stuttering, cracks, pops & other horrendous noise & I have an HP gaming computer(an AMD Ryzen 5, 3.60 Ghz with 16GB of RAM.) I also have it on the high-performance power setting. VST3 runs a bit better, but not by much. It's such an enormous issue with Cherry Audio VST's...that I can't see adding the GX-80 to my PC and making matters exponentially worse and I am considering going with Arturia's CS-80 V4(even though it costs nearly 3 times as much and doesn't measure up to the GX-80.)
@ComposerDanielWillett
@ComposerDanielWillett Год назад
Oh man, I’m sorry that your having issues. I just upgraded to a Mac Studio M1 Max with 64gb ram. The session ran super smoothly with the new machine. If I were using my old 2013 iMac I would have had to freeze or render the majority of the tracks to get it to play.
@HighlandStudio91

@@ComposerDanielWillett Wow....imagine having to spend $2,000 on a computer...just to be able to run a $59 VST. Well...thanks for the info....excuse me while I go rob a bank to finance a suitable PC. 😁
@packetsnorter
@packetsnorter Год назад
@@HighlandStudio91 well really it's $2000 + DAW $ + $59 VST to replicate a $50000 keyboard ... Times 25, so $1.25M (not to mention studio cost in the 70s to record that). That's a bargin! 😀
@HighlandStudio91
@HighlandStudio91 Год назад
@@packetsnorter You are missing my point entirely....Cherry Audio's CPU usage is worse than any other VST out there. With most other VST's, I can use many instances of said VST's with no overload....whereas with Cherry Audio, I cannot even use one instance(with certain presets)...without running into an overload. I'm 53 years old, so I understand the value of software over hardware(but I'd rather pay Cherry Audio more money for them to create better quality VST's(in terms of CPU efficiency)...rather than having to bare the expense of a massive computer(just because one goddamn company makes sloppy, CPU-decimating plugins.) There is a REASON why Cherry Audio VST's are so dirt cheap....get it?
@caruby6969
@caruby6969 Год назад
For context... I'm on Windows 10 and currently successfully running four instances of Cherry Audio's GX-80 one and instance of their Dreamsynth, alongside 3 instances of Reaktor and 2 of Kontakt 7 ... on the same speed processor and only 8GB of RAM. So either Cherry Audio have improved memory usage dramatically, or there was a problem with your specific system. I say this because, otherwise, those reading these comments might get a false impression. Hopefully the original commenter's problems have since rectified with updates or an investigation into what else is gobbling the system's RAM.

Thanks Derek! I lot of the tracks are just more layers of the same part, to make things pop more. Some layers are just sound effects or subtle transitional layers from one section to another.

The composition is excellent, the sound of this plugin is mediocre and far from the quality of the real synthesizer, the mastering/mix is disastrous, it distorts everything. Logically if you listen to it on quality studio monitors. The track is musically excellent.
