Cherry Bomb® Glasspack vs. Straight Exhaust Pipe - Sound Comparison - 5.3L Chevy

This video compares the sound of the Cherry Bomb® Glasspack and straight exhaust pipe muffler delete. How will the sound compare? Will they sound the same? Will one sound louder than the other. The Glasspack is virtually a straight pipe, so will it sound any different than straight pipes? I do a series of accelerations and one long uphill acceleration to record the "drone" sound inside of the cab of the truck and come to a conclusion.
Let me know in the comment section below which you think sounds the best on my 1999 Chevrolet Silverado Z71 with the 5.3L LM7 V8.

Back in the day we got 12 inch glasspacks that were bigger diameter than exhaust. We would heat them up with a torch then drop them in water. That breaks the fibers and pretty much makes it straight pipe. We did this because you had to had to have a muffler for inspection. The shorter the glasspack the better.

@JoeIsCrazyWillman
@JoeIsCrazyWillman 5 лет назад
Also, a larger length and overall case size (especially compared to the in/out diameters), the more sound control the mufflers have. While that may reduce overall exhaust sound volume, it also controls the sound better, so if you're driving a very stock vehicle (stock cam, intake, manifolds, etc) it helps it sound much better. Save the straightpipe for race vehicles that actually sound good untamed like that. If you want more sound volume but still want that smooth, powerful sound control, use a smaller version of the same muffler. Instead of a 30", use an 18" glasspack. Instead of a 4x9x14 Magnaflow, use a 4x9x11. Simple as that.

@JoeIsCrazyWillman
@JoeIsCrazyWillman 5 лет назад
Lastly, tricks to reduce interior volume and drone: position X, H, or Y pipe either closer or further downstream (need to play with it for your particular vehicle & engine), position muffler as far back as possible (if you place muffler AFTER the rear axle, that results in a SIGNIFICANT drop in cabin volume (I have a video I did that personally on)), add a secondary X pipe or use a muffler like a Cherry Bomb Vortex which acts like an X pipe due to internal design, and is great for a true dual setup with a dual in/out configuration on a single muffler (my current daily has this setup and it's hardly louder than stock when idling and cruising. Moderately loud when you mash on it tho. I am using an X pipe and that CB Vortex dual in/out muffler for my setup, and it's perfect for your daily driver to keep exhaust levels conversation and music friendly while idling and cruising, and still within reason while accelerating).

AWESOME comparison video!! **two thumbs up** (saves the trouble of ever having to do it myself) IMO, that straight pipe takes it to a lvl where looks need to go with with.... I think vehicles that don't look the part of muscle/street/racing aren't capable of pulling off that 100% open throat sound...I did a similar type comparison with my Harley years ago and decided even V-twins can be too loud for their briches... Although I'm sure while driving/from the cab the straight pipes are a lot more enjoyable. Where I live, loud exhaust is common place, and I honestly hate attention demanding exhausts that don't back up their "annoyance" with visual aesthetics..... (Not hating on your truck.... I'm sure you feel what I'm sayin')... i.e.- a 5/7 drop on a truck like yours and straight pipe would almost be a mandatory part of the package ;-P Hope your having a blessed 2020 brother

Unpopular opinion - I actually preferred the sharp, crisp sound of the straight pipe over the mumble off the glasspack. I feel it suits the application better on an old beat truck... On a clean daily or a family wagon the glasspack would probably sound less hick though.

That's because most engines run a lot worse with straight pipes due to lack of proper back pressure, also straight pipes are a real caveman thing to do to a vehicle with all the exhaust technology we have available.
@BradChadley
@BradChadley 5 лет назад
@@getskared "Proper backpressure." Proper backpressure is as little backpressure as possible.
@getskared
@getskared 5 лет назад
@@BradChadley thats actually very untrue in fact some engines will stall out if they don't have enough and if you are getting into performance engines you will lose stats if you don't have proper backpressure it's important to help an engine run smoothly
@BradChadley
@BradChadley 5 лет назад
@@getskared Please watch Engineering Explained's video on exhaust backpressure. It's an informative and simple summation of why that is inaccurate. The goal of a combustion engine is to remove used combustion gases as quickly as possible. If you have backpressure, it will do work against the motion of pistons, and will increase emissions, reduce performance, and fuel consumption, which is pretty self explanatory since your engine will have to work harder. This is why race cars have exhaust systems that are very loud and efficient as possible, because mufflers and catalytic convertors in a typical vehicle increase backpressure. I recommend doing some more research on how exhaust works and the effects of backpressure. Cars needing backpressure is one of the most common misconceptions about combustion engines, and is simply false. I used to think the same thing, and thought about how an exhaust system works and it didn't make sense. I did more research, and sure enough, it doesn't make sense. Remember, back pressure will fight back against the engine. A small amount of back pressure is helpful, because it creates a negative flow that will help to completely empty the combustion chamber, but it minimally affects performance and modern cars still have more backpressure than necessary (due to noise and emissions restrictions). My 2005 Toyota tundra for example, has very restrictive exhaust headers that create more backpressure than is necessary, and a set of proper long tube headers can add 20-40 hp and a slight bump in fuel economy on that particular motor (2UZFE).

Cherry Bomb for the win. Straight pipe has too many high notes that make it sound like, well, like you're missing a muffler. Those high notes are the ones that pierce the ears and they're not pleasant at all. I straight piped a '67 Chrysler Valiant Regal (an Australian-made Chrysler) and at idle it sounded great, but on acceleration the high notes came through and made it sound like a junker. The glass pack sounds better for sure, it's still loud but resonated. Less vibration sound and less popping on the decelerations.

I definitely like the even roar of the glasspack and remidms me of my classic 70`s muscle car i used to have ; the straight pipe sounds to me like you got a leak or a hole somewhere in the exhaust system ,too much rattle and high pitch pops !...good comparison video, thanks !

Haven't heard that sound in years! Back in the late 1960s My first car was a *1963 Ford Fairlane*, red & white loved that car! My dad's auto parts shop was sponsoring a race car and for some reason he decided to "soup up" my car's engine maybe because he was always working on that race car but in any case he decided to also add cherry-bomb mufflers. Every time I stopped at a light and a teenage boy came by, they'd rev their engine because those mufflers my dad added would go VROOM VROOM! When the light turned green I'd "pop the clutch" and zoooom I won! Ha-ha silly boys! Whatever my dad did to the engine it was super fast. Luckily I never got a ticket maybe rural living helped, not many police on those old country roads, awwww great memories! Making the biggest "dusty rooster tails" was fun! (not sure if anyone says that anymore but it's the dust from driving fast down a dirt road)

Also, using a high quality straight-thru muffler like Magnaflow, Corla, Corsa, etc, the packing type and quality is better and will never blow out, keeping that new sound virtually forever, or at least the life of the vehicle.

Depends ones preference..i like the Glasspack cause inside was dampening enough that one can hear the morn news and keeps the sound of Glasspack outside of truck..cause after awhile of driving str8 pipes and headers gets kinda loud and there are times one just wants to cruise easy .

I’ve been running my first 23” in length, 2.5” inlets with 3” bulb of that center of the cherrybomb glasspack, down to the trd sport muffler on my 2015 lifted Scion xB. For 4-5 years and it’s a perfect sounds for daily. And it sounds like what a TRD should sound like as a catback version exhaust that should came out from Toyota dealer. I love these cherrybombs mufflers/glasspack. Now I have a small exhaust leak on the welding so it hold up very well. But now I will get a full new carback exhaust by 2.5”. From Vibrant performance- ultra quiet resonator, down to the 12” length with a 3” bulb center of the glasspack, to the side exhaust. Something different and this will sound much deeper and more aggressive for daily. I don’t want an obnoxious loud exhaust. Just a perfect volume for my vehicles needs.🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

@@timmaynard. there won't be any difference even with the stock muffler on. The only way a loud exhaust is gonna help is with a modified engine pushing out lots of power and even then at max it's gonna be like 6 hp.

Straight pipe sounds terrible. My V8 Colorado has headers and a 3" single exhaust with a high-flow catalytic converter and Flowmaster Super 44 on it, it's PLENTY loud and sounds very, very good. Not terribly disturbing at idle/low rpm cruise, but really bellows on hard acceleration. Straight pipe's illegal and too loud even at idle to not be obnoxious, I do a lot of camping in the bed with a topper and it's nice to be able to fire the truck up and get warm for a few without pissing everyone around me off. The only thing open exhaust sounds good on is race engines through open headers. I have headers and collector mufflers with short dumps on my woods rig, a 5.2 Grand Cherokee, and even it's too loud.

I'd cut the 90 degree bend off the end of the tailpipe, get a 45 degree bend and a long 4" tip. It'll give it a deeper, louder rumble, and I'd combine that with the glasspack. I've got Dynomax Bullets, the long ones on my Suburban, and I think those are the best sounding glasspacks, and they haven't gotten any louder since the day I had them welded on.

The straight pipe sounds very different in person. I heard it in many videos and did not like like. So when i cut off my stock muffler i went straight to a flowmaster super 10. When i got tired of that muffler i went muffler delete and man it sounds good. I now have a 3 inch cat back pipe i got from an 07 n up silverado at a junkyard (bolts right up and 99 to 06s have 2.5 piping) with and autozone 5 inch resonated exhaust tip in front of my rear passenger side wheel (side exit) and its the best exhaust soung iv had.

I'm trying to decide what I want to do with my 07 P71. Straight pipe, glass pack, or chamber muffler. I don't have cats, so it is already a lot louder than stock. I'm afraid straight pipe without cats would be way too loud, but the cheapest option.

If you want to be loud and growly, then straight pipe exhaust tubing is for you. But if you want to sound nice and clean and still have some noise then glass packs are for you. I personally like the glass packs better because they sound much cleaner than straight tubing

Growly, no. Poppy and blatt-blatty, yes. The glasspack growled. The straightpipe basically did V8 flatulating..... Equivalent as a V8 form of all the fart can Hondas out there. Farting loudly, but with 8 cylinders instead of 4. 😒
