I’m not sure what, exactly, I was expecting when I cracked open the PDF for The Up-To-Date Sandwich Book published in 1909 and saw a recipe for the Cherry Salad Sandwich. I mean, sure, there would be cherries. Buuuuut what else? Turns out some savory ingredients. At first blush I wasn’t sure but, well, you’ll see.

I'd maybe swap the mayo out of this 1 for either cream cheese of a nut butter of some sort. That in mind, a 'sandwich', wouldn't be in my top 10 things to do with fresh cherries.

I was thinking cream cheese as well. Or even cottage cheese and a little salt. I don't think the celery adds anything. You get the crunch from the walnuts.

Good call on the cream cheese. Nut butter might overshadow the cherries a bit... but, what the heck? I'd give it a go! 🙂

A couple of notes. First, you can pit cherries using a narrow necked bottle and a chopstick or skewer. Simply place the cherry over the mouth of the vessel and push the chopstick down through the center. That will force the pit out into the vessel without needing to cut the cherry. The next thing I'd suggest is if you make this sandwich again to augment it with some diced up roast turkey breast.

My mom used to make something very similar to this, but with pears instead of cherries. Walnuts and mayo still present.

Yeah...but you started with turkey salad, and ripe cherries are NOT cranberries (thats why we dont have cherry "sauce" on thanksgiving).

I do not consider cherries and cranberries to be that different @@arwiviv and my turkey salad is little more than minced turkey, celery, and mayo {onion is the little more}. To me, not a huge difference. As for Bloat {what my family calls turkey day}, my cranberry sauce has onions and poblano peppers so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Did the recipe specify sweet cherries? If not, it might have been meant for sour cherries. That would make a big difference in the overall flavor, and might be worth revisiting, if you ever decide to do that.

I might toast the walnuts. Possibly a pinch of sugar. Macerate for (TBD) amt of time. Definitely has potential.

I think ricotta or mascarpone instead of mayonnaise would be better here. And some cucumber with that celery might work too.

Cherries can be surprising - I have a couple recipes that call for some variation of beef and cherries. And they're so good. Admittedly, they are probably better than this cherry salad, lol.

Northern Michigan is known for this salad, only better. Traverse City, MI is the cherry capital. Look it up.

I would have plussed it up with some vanilla ice cream! 😁 How much do cherries cost when you go to a farm and pick them yourself? I’m wondering if there’s a savings over buying them in the store or if it’s just something people like to do for entertainment. Cool video!

I didn't do a cost comparison but I'd image the gas and time involved it was probably more expensive to go pick em. Fun thing to do though.

That sandwich, to my weird brain, actually sounds and looks pretty good. I would eat that as a salad by itself maybe with a vinaigrette instead of mayo, but I like mayo.

Ok, this salad is definitely getting tried with every different variety of cherry I can lay my hands on, regardless of whether it ever gets committed to sliced bread! And I can already see that I need to read every comment for all the additional variations to check out as well...

I’d put a variation of the cherry salad on a cheese or poultry sandwich: pecans instead of walnuts and add some celery.
