Chessnut's latest iteration of their travel sized electronic chessboard is available for pre-order, but the big question is: Is the Air+ worth almost double the cost of the Air? In this video I compare the two products and give my thoughts on whether or not Chessnut's improvements to the Air are worth the "plus" in cost.
Soon I’ll post more footage of the Air+ including gameplay, let me know in the comments what else you want to see!
Use coupon code "CAMERON" or the link below for 15% off your Chessnut order, whichever board YOU decide is better!

My guess is, because the LED has to illuminate from under the wood, the dark squares have to be a lighter shade. But if the dark squares are richly dark on the Pro, then it’s marketing - they need reasons for the Pro price. Too bad you can’t pick your board and pieces separately. The only functionality I’d use is being able to have a record of practice game moves without having to keep score. Can’t justify the cost for just that. But I could if the pieces were well weighted and high quality.

It should be pointed out that the Air+ brings the aesthetics of the Pro Board over to the smaller Air form factor. If you like the looks and feel of the Chessnut Pro, you will love the Air+ simply because, for all intents and purposes, it is the same board shrunk down. BTW, I love mine.
@cameronginochiochess
@cameronginochiochess 6 месяцев назад
Totally agree. I think the greater offense is how much more expensive the Pro is over the Air+. I agree it’s a beautiful and fun board to play on, but it comes at a pretty prohibitive cost for most.

Oh that's a nice product. I have the Chess Nut Pro, but it's certainly not a travel sized board. I would never use a physical board with plastic pieces and board, so this is a welcome upgrade. But I agree with you that the wooden pieces could have more detail and weight. Maybe the next revision will have those features.

I guess I might be in the minority but even though the pieces do have some very obvious imperfections I still think the plus looks far and away better than the original with the all wood features. I’m still annoyed the Air+ pieces are lighter, though.

hey… i found you off chess reddit and I really enjoy your content with this. I would really appreciate it if you could make a comparison between the pro and the air plus… what are the key differences? is it worth paying almost double the price for better quality pieces? etc… I was going to get the air plus but seeing how much better the pro looks had me thinking
@cameronginochiochess
@cameronginochiochess 4 месяца назад
Hey thanks for the comment! I'll try to make a video soon comparing the Pro and the Air Plus. If you have the space for a tournament sized board, it would be my recommendation. I've played probably 90% of my rapid games in the last few months on my Pro. The Air Plus is a beautiful board in its own right, but when it comes to playing experience it's hard to beat a tournament sized board. Functionality is essentially identical, so I understand why the decision is hard to spend double the price for the Pro. And to be even more transparent, all of my Chessnut boards with the exception of the original Air were sent to me by Chessnut for review, so I personally didn't have to make that decision. All that said, I still recommend the Pro as it's the best playing experience for sure. If you don't have the space for a big ass board like the Pro, the Air Plus is fantastic, too.

@@cameronginochiochess I think what'd I'd really like is for someone to make some 3D printer pieces that fit the sensors. Which they sell at Chessnut for about US$30 dollars, or about $20 less than a full replacement set of pieces. Which, BTW @peter1970uk, you can purchase the Air pieces if you'd like those instead of the wonky wooden ones. I have the original Air and really like it. You could keep the wooden ones as backup.

After watching Aart Bik's Chess for Android video comparing a lot of eboards, I like Chessnut eboards the best. I love that Chessnut sells the sensors for the figures so I could easily make my own. Hey there! In terms of robustness of features you’d be hard pressed to find a device that can do as much as the EVO. It really depends on what you want out of an electronic chessboard. That said, the EVO certainly has its software quirks that can be frustrating when it costs as much as it does

why not get an indian manufacture to sell you the pieces without weights or felt added? Most will do so. The hard part is finding pieces that will fit 35mm squares. No problem with the pro as 2.25" is the USCF standard. You can even buy tungsten putty (used by boy scouts and fishermen to weight down wood block cars and lines respectively) to maybe even weight down the pieces if there is any room in there before you stuff in the sensors (which can be shipped a bit).

Would take the Air instead the Air+, I prefer good plastic pieces with correct weight to bad wood pieces. Weight being essential for my enjoyment. I think the Air gives more for the dollar, while Air+ is still great. Notice that I am accustomed to tournament plastic board and pieces, and would love a product that look exactly the same on the correct sizes (and weight), because it's the real thing in clubs, associations, local tournaments, etc.

@pawnslinger1
@pawnslinger1 6 месяцев назад
@@cameronginochiochess I like the contrast of the squares on the original. I also own the Pro, and it is very nice, but again the contrast of square colors is too washed-out for my taste. But then my normal Chess board is an ebony/cream colored squares board. House of Staunton has a real nice Maple/Palisander board for around $150 that I purchased a few years ago. Nice. I paired it with a nice Staunton set from Chess Bazaar (that only cost around $100).... its funny how I end up spending more on the board than the pieces. But the look of the board is VERY important to me... I think my taste is not shared by everyone, but most people I run into value the board look over the piece look. In pieces, I like the Dubrovnik look or the Zagreb style best, because I need help distinguishing between Bishops, Pawns and Queens. But the finer details on the carving go unnoticed, except when the board is setup as a show piece. For play purposes, my favorite set is actually plastic!! I like weighted pieces that have clear distinction between pawns, bishops and queens.
@cameronginochiochess
@cameronginochiochess 6 месяцев назад
@@pawnslinger1 great insight! I think I definitely lean more toward piece quality, but more in the sense of weight. Idk why I’m so obsessed with heavier pieces, I just think they play so much better. My House of Staunton pieces/board feel really good and the contrast is great, it’s a blue set lol. But I hear you, it’s surprising to me that Chessnut didn’t go for a deeper color for the dark squares on either the Pro or the Air+
@pawnslinger1
@pawnslinger1 6 месяцев назад
@@cameronginochiochess I totally agree with you about weight. I like the quad weighted pieces from the House of Staunton... my everyday regular set is their plastic Marshall set.... I love it, I wish I could afford the wooden version. And my best set, for special occasions and for display purposes is the House of Staunton Morphy set.... I picked it up on special approximately 5 years ago. My only problem with it is that it was pretty expensive (by my standards) and so I don't play with it often. When I really need/want to play with a wood set, I picked up a cheap Staunton style set (boxwood ebonized) from Chess Bazaar.... it looks okay and is weighted.... but only double (I wish it was quad weighted like the Marshall set). So yeah, I like the weight too.... so those 2 things are the most important factors for me, weight and piece recognition.
