BUT the DGT Centaur only gets slightly more difficult than your ability. Yet it's capable of hitting 3000 ELO. You need to play something like 10 games to get a percentage for who's the better player. I don't think single game can determine anything. White moves first, and always has the advantage at the start of the the game.

That is a brilliant feature. Pretty much the best in class at this point. There are other boards with similar feature but EVO is ahead in other areas.

The EVO pieces are rather small. Do you find it a hindrance in any way when playing a game?

they are just fine to me. I don't personally like large pieces. They are perfect for me. I prefer them to DGT Centaur's pieces that are larger but it's just a personal preference.

@@Gadgetify I think the Chessnut Air+ pieces being wooden would be better for me. For one thing, I prefer the brown color for black pieces and wood is to me more aesthetically pleasing.

@@ambizytl I am colorblind personally, so I prefer it to be as white or black as possible :) I think Chessnut Air+ is very exciting. It is coming soon. As far as I know it has not shipped yet. I'd love to test that out. I don't know if they will send me one but I hope they do :)

Evo ou Air+ with a tablet? Since I discovered Chessnut, hours ago, I wonder. Chessnut Go for sure, as I travel often.

Centaur The Good: Large Size, Level Scaling, Stockfish, Sleek. The Bad: Old Stockfish, Not Upgradable, Pieces are Cheap, Display from 1985 (didn't supply magnifying glass to see it), Buttons from 1984, No wireless/wired connectivity, does not have piece recognition. Thats not very important. Out of the two which looks like the premium board?

I think Centaur was a very good start. The pieces are not wood but they don't feel like super cheap plastic. I think despite all its shortcomings, if it allowed uploading UCI engines, it'd be 9/10 for me. I don't need app connectivity but having a way to upload games or engines without jailbreak would be nice

...and how many times did you win this "old stockfish" on a full strenght...? Piece recognition is good just like it is because specific piece recognition couses problems some times. I rather dont wanna see "one bishop" not recognized... You are keyboard ninja I guess

Also Evo's LC0 and Maia are not that strong. DGT Centaur beats most of my chess computers but loses to the latest version of Stockfish

@@jonathanbrewer7072 I think Centaur is close to 3000. I think EVO's Stockfish is about 2850. LC0 weaker. EVo has 3 engines: Maia, LC0 and Stockfish. This is the untrained version of LC0, so it's not as strong as Centaur. We will see. I am testing also gathering games to train it.

Is the Centaur still (03/2024) an attractive choice, if the main use case is playing offline games? It costs around 290 vs Evo 570. Can you actually improve your chess with the Centaur? Since it is adaptive...

The Centaur is a very good choice but it does have some shortcomings. It is just not online. If you can get it on eBay for a bit less, even better. I got my Centaur new for $230. It was heavily discounted when it was launched. Very early days. For chess improvement, I honestly would recommend Chessnut Air. I have it for a year now and its fantastic standalone board. I paid 300 eur and no regret. No problem with pieces recognition.
