I was at this show. It was in 1980 at the Opry House, & it was called "A Tribute to Chet Atkins". It was a gig thrown by his friends, & the tickets cost $50.00 each, a fortune back then. I was the biggest Chet fan ever, & a lady where i worked gave me 2 tickets 4 free. I thought I'd died & gone 2 heaven that night. almost everybody was there but Jerry, & he sent a video (or audio, I don't recall) of himself that they played for Chet to hear.
I've been to a lot of shows and one of the finest was seeing Chet Atkins solo in a little tiny venue called the Warner in Fresno California . He sat on a stool with a guitar and played for almost 2 hours straight , talking to the crowd smiling and laughing and just having a good time. What a sweet memory.
I remember seeing this as a kid. Those pauses. Comments notwithstanding, the conductor understood and rehearsed his band well. So great to see this again - it was a vivid memory. Thanks.
This thing here is called music and will remain this good as long there are ears on planet earth that can tell between music and what is thought to be music.
When this aired I was in front of the tv with a tape recorder and at 2:20 it was hard to keep quiet , but I'm glad I did ,'cause this was the best duet that will ever be.
You Tube is an amazing thing, Long may it live. Performances like this are forever and Guitar does not get better than this. Like Kayem11 says. This is music. It will stir the souls of people a hundred years from now,.
Saw Earl Klugh give a free concert at the DAR Constitution Hall in Washington DC around 1995. It was just before the release of his aptly named "Sudden Burst of Energy" album. A night to remember.
Earl and the Godfather of the guitar. Never was anyone before him and never will be anyone like him. Chet was Mr. Guitar. Been listening to him ever since I came to this country in '58 and he makes the music float like a big beautiful bird. As long as we have his music we will have Chet.
OMG. First time I heard them I was 17 with my guitar teacher sitting on the end of his chair...riveted! I'll always love this type of music he introduced me too! It's just the pure subtlety, it's so underrated yet every great duo or group or even just an individual knows when to play and when not, maybe even more important on this type of setting!
So beautiful ....passin da baton from one GOAT to another GOAT. Funny how Music allows us to look pass our differences, jus play somethin that opens your heart!
Thanks you for posting this again. Hope they don't keep deleting this awesome classic. A longer version of this song by Earl Klugh, not the video, is available on Earl Klugh cd Best of Earl Klugh Vol 2. Once you listen to it, you're going to fall in love all over again.
thanks for the repost i have loved this since the first time i saw it. i have learned so much from it. 2 truly gifted musicians. hard work and countless hours of dedication and practice. maybe i can one day be of a similar quality
At exactly 3:00 Chet misses one and drops his left hand, shakes his head just a little and keeps right on playing. What a great talent he was. And what a treat to hear he and Klugh together. I'm going on vacation today. Someone please call me when rap is over or if music ever comes back to being this good.
So very, very sorry to say that I will not be calling you because rap ain't over. Dang! By the way, when country has rap added to it, it becomes "crap."
love chet dueting with mark knopfler here is one of my favs earl klugh i used to play the classical style guitar starting out and do some charlie byrd etc and earl klugh covers then went to electric did some stevie ray etc but went back to acoustic when i realized the muic i could sing was for the acoustic
And to think Earl klugh used to be a kid who would fake sick and stay home from school if he knew Chet Atkins was going to be on a daytime talk show, and here he was on TV playing with Chet Atkins. Luckily it was in Primetime this aired I believe, plus Earl was no longer in school so he didn't have to fake sick to see it 🤣
Earl Klugh has got to be one of the most lyrical players I've ever heard ... his style transcends boundaries ... but hearing him in this duet with Chet kind of brings it home for me. Now of course Chet is no longer with us, but Earl carries on quite well. This was a vintage performance.
When I stopped watching top ten lists on RU-vid. Had one for greatest innovators on the guitars Had all the usual. Ritchie Blackmore,Eddie VanHalen Even Roy Clark all three tremendous players came to the end and didn’t have Chet or Les Paul.I was done no more top tens.
Hey dad, I remember in the middle seventies when you told me about 2 guys. Chett Atkins and another young man that was so fantastic Earl Klug. Hey dad you've been gone a while now but it just confirms this warm Spring evening... that you had one of the greatest tastes in music I ever heard and it brought me to the side of the road because you're not supposed to cry and try to drive too. I miss you tonight dad.. I remember when I 1st realized that you were not Superman, you were just a really good man and you were so far ahead of your time when he came to music . I thank you for that. I'll see you soon dad ,give mom a kiss.I love you and I still love hearing good time Charlie's got the blues acoustically.with 2 of the greatest.Chett Adkins and Earl Klugh. In a word, wow!!!💖
Thanks for posting this again, this version beats the other one hands down, what about that run of old Chet at 2:25! Both of them are playing like it's effort less. It gets no better than these two.
At 2:59 Chet misses the last note of his run. A right hand finger misses it. Its vibrato watch his finger but theres no sound). He drops his hand and shakes his head but the pro that he is he just goes on. At 3:11 they look at each other and seem to laugh about it. All Class. God- Let us have Chet back and we will give you Justin Beiber and Lady Gaga.
Earl Klugh хорошо играет на 6-сти струнке. Чет Аткенс тоже круто, но Klugh всетаки мне больше нравится. И вообще уважаю его искусство. Клуг в совершенстве владеет акустической шестиструнной гитарой.
The original recording of Chet and Earl doing this song was on Earl Klughs' fourth studio album released in 1978 entitled "Magic In Your Eyes". Chet is featured on this song and in the liner notes Earl tells of Chet being one of his main influences. This was one of the first albums I ever bought when I was 17 years old and is still one of my all-time favorite albums, period.
I totally agree, the horn arrangement is goofy and totally unnecessary. The price of dealing with producers and contract arrangers who are looking to make a splash on TV. Let a great song and great musicians tell their own story. Dang...
