I think a more fair comparison vs a ram air 400 gto would be a L78 Chevelle. The 325 hp 396 is no slouch but the L78 was a monster killer on the street in the day. I know for a fact that guys would shy away from lining up against a 396 SS that had the tell tale ticking under the hood. My brother owns a 69 with an L78 that was a local legend in Brattleboro Vt in the early 70's when he first got the car and we were talking to the guy who owned the machine shop we used he knew the car immediately and told us many stories of the cars reputation. Ive driven it and i can attest that its surprisingly quick for a 396!
I agree I have to do my comparisons on cars that I own . I try to match. Next week I have a good one 1987 Buick GN vs a 1989 trans am Pace car with a Buick GNX engine
