Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 2018 TestDrivenow Video Review By Auto Critic Steve Hammes.
In case you haven’t noticed, off-road trucks are a thing and they’re gaining in popularity. No longer do you need to up-fit a garden variety pickup with aftermarket parts to accomplish the task. Companies like GM are providing the opportunity to buy these serious off-road trucks straight from the factory. Case in point: the new Colorado ZR2.
MSRP as-tested: $47,970

Traded my tundra for one of these about a year ago. Couple issues but GM took care of them and it's been flawless ever since.

Toyota going to loose alot of sales over this truck.front and rear lockers theres nothing better to a true off roader.the gm v6 is also a very reliable engine. I have the jeep Rubicon and have drove the zr2 its outstanding on handling and performance and also comes with the front and rear lockers. The only thing gm could of done better is a lift and 35 tires on it to improve its ground clearance.

You can actually get those parts through chevy performance and because they're GM parts you keep you're warranty!

The Colorado ZR2 is the best off road truck from the factory, it's smaller and more agile than the raptor and power wagon and more capable and luxurious than a Tacoma The diesel gets great mpg, a ZR2 gets around 32mpg highway and a regular Colorado gets 35 highway with the diesel. THAT'S REAL WORLD MPG. Plenty of videos proving that on here.
@Jimmyxsx
@Jimmyxsx 6 лет назад
Kevin Bowman The Raptor has more ground clearance, more suspension travel, more powerful not even comparable lol

guy proulx how are those front and rear lockers in the Toyota? Oh wait they don't have them. If you have driven off road which you haven't, you would know . 5 in right height doesn't make up for not locking front and rear diff.
@UvidCo
@UvidCo 6 лет назад
guy proulx I have son. You mean that locking rear deff that still puts more power to the wheel that is free and not stuck? I do off-road bud. You take a truck with front and rear and tell me it won't make a difference. Might as well say a 4×2 can compete with a 4×4. Btw there are a couple more Chevy Ford and ram posts on RU-vid so you can post about how great Toyota trucks are. Go to tfl trucks page while your at it and see the new 18 tundra and the excuses they (Toyota rep) makes having a fake hood scoop and crap tires lol. Toyota trucks are a joke now a days especially the tundra. Same gas mileage as 89 Ford. One of the reasons I didn't buy one.
@UvidCo
@UvidCo 6 лет назад
guy proulx a locking rear diff locks both wheels. You put strain on Toyota locking rear diff and it will STILL spin the wheel with less grip over the one without. That isn't a true locking differential. I have seen both a Tacoma and tundra do it while off roading. Both with "locking differentials". Sure you have to let me figure it out. Because you know it's true and are scared to admit that these trucks are dated. But I bet if Toyota did put the front locker in you would be the first to say "the tacoma has front locking so it's better off road than....." The tundras gas mileage sucks because it uses tech from 2001. But even other brands from 2001 has better gas mileage. The tundra is to Toyota what Trump is to the rest of the world. A nothing. It could never and will never be a true competitor to the other truck brand. That also for for Nissan.
@UvidCo
@UvidCo 6 лет назад
guy proulx hahahahaha yes that's right 2007 that's the year the tundra is stuck in. Same hp and tq and same gas mileage as 2007 It is 2017 bud wakeup. Stop living in the past. Gm's 6.2 has more HP and tq and better gas mileage and could pull the tundra in half that goes from this generation and the last. But hey the tundra is a better truck right. They haven't put front lockers in because they don't have a true off road truck. Again the lockers in the Toyotas are garbage. I said already they still spin the free wheel over the stuck one or both. If you did off road as you said, you would know that. But you probably already know it but are such a fanboy for Toyota you can't bring it to yourself to admit it.As for gas mileage you already answered why it sucks. It sucked in 2007 and it hasn't changed since then. It has some of the worst specs of all the trucks and in 2027 they might have caught up to 2017. Just like the fanboys of the brand, Toyota is still in the past. Face it no matter how many other brand posts you troll. TOYOTA IS STILL THE BOTTOM OF THE PACK. Toyota doesn't give a crap about it. If they cared about their trucks they would be in 2017 not 2007. I'll catch ya later Mr troll. I'm sure I'll see you posting about Toyota on another brands video sometime. By then you might bring the year up to 2008 or even the big 2009. Lol man you are good for a laugh.

I have had mine 3 weeks now - same color Cajun red - but I purchased the 3.6 V6 so the monies I saved on it verses the the diesel I loaded it up with every option that I wanted which aren't really many with this model. I wanted the more power the V6 offered for highway use and the V6 is still rated to tow if I recall 6,000 lbs compared to 6,500 lbs for the diesel plus I like the the 8 speed auto trans. It really is a very nice truck the ride is smooth and not choppy like some full size pickups. I just was tired of the full size trucks and also didn't need one any longer regardless of brand. The 300 plus HP V6 really gets up and moves it's quick for a truck and it tows my 4 snowmobiles and trailer great. So far the 2,400 miles that I have driven it have been really nice and enjoyable plus I have had it off roading a bit but it's been in ten plus inches of powdery snow that didn't really test it.

mikey fiftythree Honestly you can't go wrong with either one(Tacoma or Colorado). I highly recommend taking a good long look at both trucks and test drive it. Looking at it is not enough or does the trucks any justice. I know it's wierd but only when you drive it you'll be able to in a way feel the trucks and see which one really communes with you.

As soon as I decided to test drive the Chevy I knew my Tacoma was in trouble from the moment I sat inside the cab, to hitting the gas the first time!. This is a nice truck, but as you clearly see the big 3 has been taking the tacoma and tundra style for a while now. This chevy looks like an 06 tundra and tacoma. Everyone can see that, this is not a new truck, its just a barrowed idea toyota gave to chevy to remain relevant. Thats why your new Silverados look like tundras. So all you chevy fan boys keep your excitement to a minimum, and, remember who bail you out, they should be called obama cars

The price tag on these trucks as nice as they are (Both the ZR2 & the TrdPro) are gimmicky at best. Most of these trucks are expensive driveway ornaments that will never really see what they are built for. But each there own. I'd rather take a nicely trimmed Z71 or the lower down priced Taco, tho the seating the Taco is abysmal. Great review. Nice truck.

The Raptor is a solid vehicle lacking in usefulness. Its payload and towing is severely hampered by its suspension. It's wide as hell (wider than most 3/4 ton's), and ultimately provides little value for offroading, unless your version of offroading is running Baja desert roads like a Ken Block wannabe. The Power Wagon is a very utilitarian vehicle, both in terms of working abilities and offroad abilities. It is, however, big and thirsty. The ZR2 (and the Colorado platform its based on) is very much the truck that many offroad/overland enthusiasts have been asking for. Toyota puts a car engine into its new "Tacoma" and calls it good. GM puts a v6 gasoline and a 2.8l diesel, front/rear lockers, boxed frame, offroad suspension...this ticks all the boxes for 4x4 enthusiasts, and the size is much more practical than you get with a Power Wagon or Raptor. I applaud GM and I don't even consider myself a GM fan. If you dislike what GM did, go back to drinking your brand's kool-aid and let us true enthusiasts enjoy the competitive market options.

All the goodies active suspension etc.. aside .. it’s the electric seat , upright heating position , and more headroom that sells it to me over the Tacoma .. and I’m disappointed ..on the outside I had my heart set on a trd pro Tacoma .. smaller , thinner .. more truckie .. looked cooler .. then I sat in one .. and sat in a zr2 .. sorry the zr2 wins ! ..wake up Toyota !! Need 4 more inches of headroom and an electric seat .. if it had those things I’d buy one .... just for clarity I have a f150 xlt supercab fx4 .. I have a need for it .. but it’s big .. the zr2 will replace my Subaru Forester limited .. want my ass up higher of the ground ..the seat on the zr2 feels like my 2018 f 150 .. and when you got a bad back .. seat feel is everything .. seat heaters and the lumbar support help .. getting old is a bitch.. so in a week or so I wave goodbye to Subaru and hello to zr2 .. a ford and a Chevy in the driveway .. now only decision is whether to spring for the diesel .. bottom end grunt be great , but all the bad info on reliability of the exhaust system sensors scares me

My daughter was about go go buy a new ZR2 and then we found out about the colorado frames braking in half and gm is telling people that's tough. It is all over the internet it can't be denied and gm is not recalling them. We are a truck family I own repair shop and she had a 2003 ZR2 that worked better in the snow then anything I have ever seen, But I want her to be safe. Besides not many people can just scrap a $40k truck after 5-8 years. Has gm done any thing to fix this? I am not a toyota fan but they did buy back or recall the trucks that the frames rusted out on. Lets see if you can get us some info and give a honest answer.

I own one, those highway numbers are grossly wrong. It pretty consistently gets 24/25 highway even without babying it, and can hit in the 30s pretty easy if you do baby it.. The city numbers are about right though.

We went from a six thousand dollar S10 in 82 and graduated to a forty-seven thousand dollar version in 2019. Some new car and truck prices are ridiculous.

How was the start up during the cold mornings in up state NY? Did you have to wait s sec for the glow plugs to warm up? Was the cranking time a little longer than usual? If so, then not a good thing to have during the zombie apocalypse where one needs to get going quickly. But I'm betting that the cold temps would slow the metabolism in a zombie.

I’ve owned my 2016 Colorado Z71,4x4, V6 Ext Cab for just about 2 years and 22,000 trouble free miles. We also tow a travel trailer that is responsible for more than half those miles, from home in Massachusetts and as far north as Bar Harbor ME,to as far south as Key West Florida, plus as far west as The Smokey Mountains of Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge areas. I have to say that after owning Silverados an Avalanche and a couple Dodge trucks this Colorado is a fine Truck! Even with the gas engine we average 18 city driving easy and 26 hyw with the cruise control set at the speed limits! Or an average of 14 on our last towing trip to Florida! With plenty of power and comfort! I find this truck that does everything I want, from trails to running down the beach, I’ve never been stuck or needed to go to the dealer for anything but the first two oil changes tire rotation that comes with the purchase. The truck has never used any oil between changes and runs great! Would I like a ZR2?? Sure but I’m not sure how it would tow, plus the mileage suffers with the lift and bigger tires. So with the limited off roading we do I think the Z71 is fine! I have removed the air dam and added a set of slightly longer coil overs for a level stance at 1.5” in front, plus added air bags in the rear to stay level with the trailer after raising the front. I also chose Bilstien Shocks front and rear, that help smooth the ride. All in all I feel this Truck fits the bill! Now as far as a ZR2 is concerned, all this truck needs besides a supercharger, is aftermarket front fenders developed for direct replacement for the needed clearance for bigger tires! But for a stock truck, built for an off road bias? This is the best start. For a decent starting price. In my area at my dealer, you can get an Ext Cab ZR2 V6 8 speed for just under 40k!

guy proulx see I’d rather replace a truck after I get tired of it with a new one! But every truck I’ve sold has gone to a younger brother, that yes has gone passed the 200,000 mark, but has still be sold after that for decent money! Without frames needing replacement!

Its a rip off of the 06 tundra and tacoms, it's pathetic that Chevy had to stoop to this level to compete with the Tacoma. I dont care how good it may look, when something or someone lose its character its bitch made, through and through. The Colorado gets no respect.
@mikemissouri5152

@loganpierce2061
@loganpierce2061 6 лет назад
Thats just ridiculous, the taco is a worldwide icon, the chevy is a cheaply built over priced want to be in the spotlight wannabe. Its trying to step up its game since the 08 bailout. But the 80s chevys were great, love them, but they sold out for profits and build shitty trucks, and lost there identity. The tacoma dont have to compromise with anyone, either you like or you dont and thats what being a man is all about, thats why there no.1.
