This is a fix for saggy worn out door hinges on a Chevy Blazer that my buddy Marc came up with. Disclaimer: THIS IS NOT A WELDING TUTORIAL. We know the weld sucks, but that's not the point here....

UPDATE: July 2020. So the fix has held up! We know this was not supposed to be a professional fix by any means. Neither of us are very good at welding, but we hope this inspires others to give fixes a try and save some money. I also end up fixing the door jam latch. I hope to edit this video soon and share some more less than perfect fixes.

What if you don't HAVE access to a welder?! I'm about to try JB Welding the bored half of the hole smaller, but I cannot imagine that working for long.

Good job fellas. Welding comes with practice. The only correct repair would have been weld in new hinges, and that's a lot of work. I like the initiative and the time you took to share.

Hey a. what hes getting at is its not the bushings, i had the same issue with mine. the holes in the hinges get wallerd out and new bushings will either break or fall out. only other iption would be cutting those hinges off and welding in new hinges. But good job guys, i think its a great fix

Would have been nice if you told us the diameter of the hole your buddy drilled in that scrap of metal you used. No biggie. I'm sure I can figure it out. Wondering if using a chunk off an old wrench handle (tool steel) would be a better choice? Maybe last a 'lil longer. Thanks for sharing this video. I may just have to give this a try.

Bro I attempted drilling into a wrench handle...It is NEAR IMPOSSIBLE. I used a drill ol press on low speed water and 3 burnt bits

Look at the hinge pin on your Blazer. Measure the width. If not sure how to measure or don't have calipers, then get scrap pieces of wood, hold each wood drill bit in your set on top of hinge pin until you find one that seems right, drill the wood, see if it fits snug. If too small, try the next biggest bit and widen the hole. If too big, drill a new hole with next smallest bit. If the smallest bit to make a hole that fits the pin is still too big, go with the smaller bit, and file the hole evenly until it fits. Then repeat this with your metal strip and metal drill bits and metal file. I've no experience, but that's how I'd approach it. Some may try to shortcut by skipping the wood sizing stage and metal file and just wobble the smaller drill bit to widen the hole, but this risks making an elongated, oversized, or irregular hole, depending on skill. The longer method using wood mockup and slow hand filing mitigates that risk.

On my vehicle, I have the same door symptoms, except the hinges themselves seem to have some rust around edges and a slightly deformed door frame surface indicating some rot inside there behind the metal the hinge is welded to. Also, the roller on the pin rotted off, and the spring won't stay in. There are no replacements for the hinge pin with the roller thingy. In my case, I may need door frame surgery, so there's something solid to weld a new/used hinge to.

Are there any safety concerns, while welding in that area, from the flying sparks?
@SevenFortyOne

Yes...you have to always be careful when welding
@Warp9pnt9

Eye, face, ear, skin, hair, and clothing protection. Welding mask, ear plugs, leather gloves, apron, etc. Basic welding safety. As for the vehicle, leather, wet leather, or wet towels on upholstery, floor carpet. Cover the wires in the door (black rubber accordian tube thingy). Cover the plastic door panel and dash. Maybe protect the tires as well. Also, the fuel line runs on top of the frame rail. Hot slag might get shot up from concrete floor. Just drape something (leather, wet towel, etc) down from seat to floor. 1 or more fully loaded fire extinguishers NEXT TO YOU, not across the shop somewhere, buried in a junk pile, and half full. Think it's overkill? Sure, 80-90% of the time you can just wing it with no precautions and you'll be fine. Just accept that sooner or later you'll permanently injure yourself, damage irreplacable vehicle parts, and set your vehicle and shop on fire, because you're too lazy, too egotistical, too machismo to spend 5-10 minutes on safety prep.

This is a common problem with S-10's /S-15's. Before you make a poor attempt at welding a "bracket" onto an otherwise good door and hinge you should look into buying a hingepin kit that comes with bushings to make the repair and is intended specifically for this problem.

I have 19 year old GMC JIMMY with no rust, age has nothing to do with how you fix it. I want to keep mine as nice as possible for as long as I can. I don't jerry-rig vehicles my kids or I drive in. The kits only cost $11 . I can understand if you have a piece of shit that will be heading to the junkyard soon.
