Come with me as I take the Chevy Bolt EV through 183 miles of summertime driving. It was really hot out and most of the drive was spent at 70 miles per hour, but the car still did pretty well.
Here's a link to my winter range test:

That is great that they have a shift interlock for the charge cord! There have been people in traditional gas engine cars accidentally drive off with the filler hose still attached and they ripped the hose off of the pump! That can't happen with electric.
@Kriss_L

A couple years ago, I saw a van on I-90 with a gas pump nozzle and hose still in the filler. It was doing about 70mph and the driver was oblivious.
@fireyblackdragon

I had an original RAV4 EV back in like 03, and it also refused to shift into gear when plugged in, so I assume it was discovered pretty quickly that people weren't used to being plugged in at home, so the interlock was important. However: the parking brake was manual, so if your garage was ever so slightly sloped, you could release the brake and begin to roll backwards. Even though the connector just kinda slid in (there were no latches on that charging cable), and it was on the front, the cord connected at a 90deg angle, and so could still cause tons of damage. Totally not speaking from experience, though. (it was caught in time, but still a scary event)

Thanks for the metric units. I understand and can comprehend feet and inches but I don't have a reference/understanding of miles, gallons, pounds and so on.
@seraphina985
@seraphina985 6 лет назад
A pound is 454 grams so at small scales thinking of it as half a kilo is a reasonable way to get a sense of scale, sure it's about 10% off but that's probably not much worse than the estimate error a person would typically have if you just dropped a pound of stainless steel in their hand and asked them to guess the weight so at human scales it's close enough. Also miles it's about 5 miles to 8 km roughly. Gallons however are a pain in the ass because there are multiple different units commonly all simply called a gallon that mean different things.
@crystalsoulslayer
@crystalsoulslayer 6 лет назад
People only really "get" a unit when they use it on a regular basis. It's a bit like learning a language. When you start speaking that language more fluently, you think in that language rather than translating from your native tongue. I know that a meter is roughly 3 feet, but I don't "think" in meters. It might be helpful to give you an idea based on everyday examples: - If you buy your milk in one-liter bottles, one of those weighs a little over 2 pounds. - Four liters of milk would be roughly equivalent to a US gallon. - Walking for 5 minutes would cover about a quarter of a mile, assuming you walk at the average speed of humans, about 3 miles an hour. - The average speed limit in European cities is about 50 KPH, which is roughly 30 miles per hour. US highways have a maximum speed limit of 70 MPH, slightly slower than the 75-80 MPH of Europe's average (120-130 KPH). Most people speed, though, which I find irritating. All this being said: _why can't the US just convert to metric._ I'd be happy to learn a new "language" of measurement if it meant conversions were that easy. How many feet are in a mile? I don't know! _Nobody_ knows! This entire country Googles it!
@ataksnajpera

Thanks for the review. I heard it while working as a process server in Phoenix, who drives crazy miles in my Bolt. The temperature was 110F and it definitely takes a toll on range, but I still have plenty. About once every other week, I have to top up at a level 3. Most of the time I leave the house with enough to do my work. I will admit to a little hypermiling, on occasion.

EVs really benefit those households the most that (A) have more than one vehicle (B) have charging available at home where the vehicle is parked. (C) Drive 50-100 miles at least 5 days a week. This list is a huge number of households and represent the 'lowest hanging fruit' to EV adoption. If you meet all 3 of these criteria, get an EV an start saving money on fuel and maintenance. Once we start getting EVs in the garages of single family dwellings, then we can figure out how to help the on-street parking and apartment dwelling folks. Around this time, the secondary EV market should be a bit bigger and it should start to become more clear just how much easier and cheaper it is to drive electric and it will no longer will make financial sense to keep driving a gas powered car every day.

Over here in the UK, we have many rest stops (or what we call Service Areas) which were built over the road, mostly in the 1950s and 60s, it's kinda cool to sit there and eat your food watching the traffic racing past... Also it may interest you to know that *every* UK service area has at least 2 AC fast chargers provided by the utility company Ecotricity as part of their electric highway scheme. I enjoyed this video a lot and laughed at your commentary! :)
@richdaley9982
@richdaley9982 8 месяцев назад
I realize this is an old comment but there are federal laws in the US preventing most commercial activity in highway rest stops. 80 years ago when the system was built, people were worried that drivers would bypass their town if they could eat and fuel up on the road. It resulted in travel plazas being built near exit ramps so they didn’t save their towns anyway.

On a somewhat unrelated note, how do you write your closed captioning? I could never figure it out in Premiere with trying to export CEA-608 and it cutting off the last parts of sentences or with Open Captions only exporting as closed captions sometimes. I have never seen anything in California resembling that Oasis stop. We certainly have conventional oases and we could use more of them because it's hot, dry, and if you get stuck, the first thing you need if you can't get out of there is water and then some shade. There are rest stops sometimes in remote areas, particularly if you go to drive across the desert where there isn't much else. A lot of places just have the occasional town so they mostly leave people to stop there if they need to do so.

Taking the Turnpike (I-80) is always fun when I pass through Illinois, because those oases are so much better than your typical service plaza. In Ohio, they have to build a mirror of the service plaza on either side of the highway, so their budget is stretched more. Some day I hope to have a job where I can travel by road more, because I personally enjoy long highway trips like these.

When we visited Chicago about 10 years ago we were surprised to the oasis stops, never seen one before. We stopped at that one next to O'hare on our way out. Ate breakfast watching the cars go under us. Weird experience.

a dash cam with a properly calibrated CPL filter over the lens would greatly cut back the glare and dash reflections.

get a polarization filter for that dashcam to eliminate the reflections. i even made one from polarization foil bought online

Since I noticed you had the radio tuned to 720 WGN... how's the AM reception in the Bolt? The BMW i3 and Tesla Models 3 and X don't have AM radio because they claim the electric motor causes too much interference (heck, the Model 3 didn't even include *FM* radio until they added it with an update!) -- but somehow GM managed to make it work in their electric cars.
@TechnologyConnections
@TechnologyConnections 6 лет назад
It seems completely fine! I can tell its reception isn't a good at far distances--getting near Peoria you can hear a little static--but it's still intelligible. The only weird phenomenons I've encountered were in the Volt. When I get near my parents house, for some reason there is a sporadic "SSHK" like the static between two-way radio transmissions at random times. This only happens once I get past where I-180 meets IL-29, and it starts like clockwork. It's very strange and I have no explanation, especially as it doesn't happen in the Bolt, and it hasn't happened in any other car I've driven down there! The other thing which isn't the fault of the car was a set of aftermarket LED headlights I had installed in the Volt caused AM interference for a few minutes upon startup, but it would go away. This is no longer an issue as the diodes had worn to the point where they are much dimmer than the halogens and I swapped them back. The Gen1 Volt has terrible headlights unfortunately. Now separate high-beam bulb, just the shutter and projector.

Great video, nice to see you take advantage of the great range of the Bolt EV and show that EVs don't have to limited to only city driving. I did not know it could be that hot (mid 30s Celsius) in Illinois in late May. Do you have idea why your garage only has 208 V instead of the more common 240 V?
@TechnologyConnections
@TechnologyConnections 6 лет назад
I live in a condo building which has a three phase electrical supply. When you tap two phases of the three, you get 208V across them rather than the 240 of standard split-phase household service. It's nothing out of the ordinary, just an odd quirk of industrial/large building supplies. Similarly, my appliances are also on 208V. Most appliances are designed to tolerate that voltage for apartments, condos, etc. And these temps in May are almost unheard of! We were very near the record this weekend, and as I write this it is now 53 degrees (which is 11.6° C). That's more along the lines of normal.

odd question but did you use the ac in recirculate mode? I think i know some ICE cars that struggle to cool down 90F outside.
@TechnologyConnections
@TechnologyConnections 6 лет назад
It's a fully automatic climate control, and the "recirc" button was set to "auto" the entire time, so most likely it was recirculating. It's much more efficient aside from simply more effective
@MichaelFlatman
@MichaelFlatman 6 лет назад
yeah, especially in winter where you can heat fresh air using free heat, it would be wasteful on an electric car.

My mom's 20 year old Mitsubishi Mirage hasn't had it's A/C serviced the 12 years she's owned it and it cools down Southern California Summer temperatures just fine. If a bottom-of-the-automotive-food-chain sedan can do that with a wimpy-ass 1.5L 4-cylinder, then you've encountered people with some shitty cars or you're lying.
