Alex is there a way to see where that leak came from near the the turbo by visual inspection? I know it was covered by the heat shield. I had my coolant reservoir replaced because it was a leak and 2 hoses because of coolant damage because the hose was soft. The shop did the work. Put pressure through the system before to check for leaks and and after when the work was done to check for leaks. I left and 9 days later same issue. Come to find out there was a secondary leak from rusted pipes from coolant line going to the turbo. In your opinion if you did the work on the reservoir and 2 hoses wouldn't you check other lines leading from or associated with the coolant just to make sure there isnt any issues so you might want to inform the customer? Thanks. Oh I have a 2012 Chevy Cruz Eco with 116k miles.
@AlexTheCarDoctor

They definitely should’ve looked over the whole cooling system for you for potential future failures,I don’t see why not it benefits both you and the shop if they find something like a rusted coolant parts

I just replaced the coolant reservoir on a 2012 Cruze a few months ago. It was definitely cracked and leaking. Now it's back in our shop, came in after overheating. Coolant was low. I filled it and pressure tested again. No leaks, no pressure drop. Sat on the lift under pressure for 30 minutes before I got drips. If you pull the tube the leak goes away. Not an obvious leak and sometimes doesn't leak depending on how it's positioned. Just poor design by GM.
@AlexTheCarDoctor
@AlexTheCarDoctor 2 года назад
If there was any rusted coolant lines I would most definitely let the customer know . You can easily see rust on the outer lines but I do know sometimes the outer lines will look fine and it will rust from the inside out that you can’t really detect. Thanks for watching buddy

Thank you very much for that awesome video. It made this repair much easier for me. I do have one question though, what brand of parts did you use?? I used Zonfant, which I bought from Amazon. About 1 month after i did the repair one of the coolant lines on the turbo is leaking due to a faulty part. So Im going to take it all back apart and replace it again. Im not very impressed with the Zonfant brand. Is GM Parts the best for this, or am I just paying more for the name? Any info. you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Brian

Thanks @Alex for the great video. I have a coolant leak from a car very similar to this, coming from one of the lines attached to the turbo. My mechanic told me that it's best to replace the lines as well as the turbo itself just to make sure that the leak is fixed. Do you think it's necessary to replace the turbo as well? I want to see whether I can save some bucks by using the same turbo. Thanks again.

Informative and thorough, your work deserves more attention. When I did this job on a 2011 Cruze, I didn't take the cat out. It was enough just to remove the bolt on the bracket holding it to the engine, that allowed enough wiggle to pop it off the downpipe. I like how you kept the budget down by only replacing the parts that were broken. If your fixing your car on a budget or just getting in to doing your own auto work, keep in mind that OEM parts are expensive and not always necessary. Sometimes, they're not even the best quality option. Most of the time, a third party option from Korea or China will do the job just fine. This does not apply to the cheapest knockoff of the most complicated engine parts, but generally: if it's on Rock Auto or being sold at NAPA, it will be good enough to last until you upgrade your ride. I've ran multiple third-party water pumps, belts, coils, and even engine bearings for 5+ years, until I have sold the car. But use this guy to tell you how to install it.

Hey there thanks for watching is your car Chevy Cruz and what engine size. It’s definitely not normal to smell any fumes inside your car that’s actually dangerous make sure you have the windows down to vent out the gas fumes while driving

I can't remove the bolt from the top of the catalytic converter 🥲 I used a 10mm extractor and I just smoothed it out more and continued with 3/8 and it doesn't fit.

@AlexTheCarDoctor

You can get away with out replacing it especially if it’s metal gasket but if you can I recommend replacing it so you won’t have to do the work over again if it leaks

Great video 🙏🏽. I just have one question. When installing the turbo and coolant lines you removed with the 17 mm or Vice grip. Did you have a problem with the coolant line on the left reaching the hole? For some reason that coolant line for me won’t reach any tips you can give me I am ordering the new coolant line hopefully it works better.

On my own personal cars, I don't put those plastic panels back on when I have to remove them. Up north, they trap the salt and keep me from rinsing the bottom of the car. So it's a lot easier to rinse the salt if they aren't there and obviously to reach everything to fix it.
