I should have just bought a Trail Boss! Chevy charges too much money for the new ZR2 when it's hardly better than a regular 1500 Silverado, let me explain why.

I don’t know… hearing your complaint that this is an overpriced Trail Boss doesn’t hold water for me. Sure, if you’re driving it around town, doing the basic mall crawl route, then I can see that being a valid complaint. But if you got the ZR2 to do what it’s designed to do, which is drive 60 mph+ on a dirt road with zero drama, or actually use the front locker for rock crawling or climbing out of mud and sand, then the TB is not going to measure up. I’m hearing the complaint from a lot of truck bros that it’s not worth the price. Well, if all you want is to drive around town with a leveling kit and bigger tires (which, btw, actually do affect your fuel economy. Unsprung mass, especially without re-gearing or adjusting the speedometer will show up as incorrect readings and underperforming acceleration), you absolutely should have just gotten a TB. But unless you’re going to use this truck for what it was engineered for, then no wonder you’re upset. It’s like buying a 911 GT3 RS to drive your kids to school then getting upset there’s no backseats.

You're not entirely wrong, but this truck is built first and foremost to use as a DD. No one is buying a ZR2 and strictly using it off road. You have to factor in all the other uses for the truck and it's faults in that department, which I cover. And you'd be kinda nuts to use this truck for rock crawling considering it's small tires and low ground clearance. The lockers are awesome, no doubt, but the rest of the off road capabilities of this truck are underwhelming and way behind the competition. It's literally a Trail Boss with DSSV shocks and lockers.

It's not about affording the data plan. It's the fact that GM brags about all the features but doesn't tell you that you'll have to pay monthly for them. Over a 5 year ownership that's an extra $1200. And I won't get into GM selling your driving data to insurance companies.

I was pretty stoked when Chevy announced the Silverado ZR2. Then the commercials popped up bragging about being on 33's. Huh? The Raptor is on 37's now. And only one engine option? When there are perfectly good diesels and near 700hp supercharged V8's in GM's inventories? Seems like a pretty good vehicle for the Blackwing Hot-V motor Cadillac spent $20 million on. Ram has the T-Rex and Ford has the Raptor R so Chevy must have wanted to start from the 2nd row. Even the 2023 Colorado ZR2 is slated to have 400+ horsepower. I'm pretty underwhelmed.

Thanks for the video, very informative. I just recently got my hands on a trail boss, white and black like yours with the duramax. A few months ago I ordered a GMC Sierra but because of the constraints I was not getting the truck that I wanted anytime soon. My sales guy called me up and said this is what we got in now off the truck as someone opt out of their order, I felt like at this point beggars can't be choosers. I have always owned a GMC truck and to switch over to the Chevy side is a big step, it is a nice truck I admit and I certainly hope I don't have issues as GMC has always been good to me. As someone who has owned both the Trailboss (2020) and now the ZR2 (2023) I can assure you that the ZR2 is one bad truck. The ride is smoother and takes on trails like butter thanks to the upgrade in suspension. As for gas, no one gets performance vehicles for fuel efficiency. Test drive a new ZR2, don’t blame me when you fall in love with it 😎

Great content. Clearly they got really lazy with the Silverado ZR2. Some team put a ton of hard work into making the Colorado ZR2 Special - many different parts as you know. Then they took the ZR2 brand and just plastered it onto the big truck to make more money. Sure front locking diff, but how much did that ZR2 badge cost? Reminds me of BMW's ///M brand that used to be reserved for very special, very capable vehicles. Now they'll slap an ///M on anything if you spend enough money.... Nice E36 BTW! This is an example as to when it comes to my choice of trim level for a Sierra for example, I could go between an SLE or an Elevation Trim and just leave it there, this may sound lame to those who want more, but it's also proof that having the top Trim Models for some of these trucks, can also come with setbacks, just an example that the parts that are needed to put these trucks together and to function properly are of low quality; especially for the electronics, that certainly goes for all Trim Levels across the board.

The auto highbeams not coming on with the fog lights makes perfect sense. If you have your fog lights on they are on for a reason like fog. You don't want brights in the fog.
@strozyvoodoo5395
@strozyvoodoo5395 Год назад
The real reason is that most states have laws limiting you to a maximum of "4" front facing white lights on at any given time, unless it is an emergency vehicle. The "fog" light on newer vehicles isn't even a fog light anymore. It's actually called a "driving" light. It just shines a little more light onto the road surface and out to the sides a bit. However, the driving lights are white and not yellow, which are useful in fog. So basically it's really about the law and nothing else. There is an aftermarket mod, can't remember the name of the company, but it's called the "4-hi" or "6-Hi" mod. It was basically a harness jumper that would allow you to run your brights, lows, and "driving" lights at the same time. Very useful in rural settings, but you can achieve better results with a Rough Country LED front light kit.

I own a Summit White Silverado ZR2. I've had a different experience. My front camera module went out at 300 miles - it took two months for the part to come in, but now works again. I'm still waiting on heated steering, but that's minor. I subscribe to the data plan so I have the fully functioning Infotainment Center and it is AWESOME, quick and responsive. If you're buying a $75k truck, don't chimp out on a data plan. I optioned the truck with rocker protectors, sun roof, multiflex gate, and performance exhaust (made by Borla). The Borla exhaust is quite loud on cold start - I believe it's the attack version of the Borla exhaust. It has deep, muscular tones. Mine totaled $74,500. I traded my 2020 Summit White TB LT (5.3) for this ZR2 and I do not regret it. The tries aren't small; they compliment the wheel travel and designed that way. Also, I don't know how you drive your truck around, but I get 19 mpg on the highway, and 15.6 in the city. Considering its a 6.2, it gets better mpg than my TB LT. The interior is amazing - the best interior of any vehicle I've owned. The truck is a turn key solution; if you want to fuq boy your truck, yes, stick with a TB. This truck is perfect out of the gates. It is NOT the same ride height as a TB. Technically, it sits 1/2" higher. This truck is more capable than a TB, although most people wont tackle the terrain that differentiates the two trucks. The DSSV and lockers separate this truck, and those upgrades aren't cheap. This is still a version 1 tuck so be patient as GM works out the kinks. In all, I'm definitely pleased with the step up from my 2020 TB LT! High Country owners are jealous of this truck's interior. I think this truck measures up to its billing. It has tremendous curb appeal; when I leave a restaurant or store, there's a 30% chance some dude is checking out my truck. One guy even asked to see the interior.

I shouldn't have to pay extra for features each month, regardless of the cost of the vehicle IMO. I have to disagree on the tires too, 33s are TINY in today's world. Most non off road trucks come with nearly a 33 stock. I drive the truck average, I don't baby it but certainly don't drive fast everywhere. I'm hoping GM steps their game up but I really don't think they're interested in a long travel truck.

Valid concerns but I want to be fair with a few things: 1. You have after market rims and tires. The tires are bigger than factory so of course you are not going to get factory rated mpg. It’s still terrible but I don’t think they were dishonest about it. 2. Fog lamps aren’t going to automatically switch to high beams because if high beams kick in it’s going to blind people and make GM liable for a crash. 3. CarPlay has always been a little slow, but I think it’s the connection rather than the software. Definitely still GM’s fault on that though.

I have the 22 refresh 6.2 trailboss but I totally agree with you on the apple car play. it seems built around googles system and my android connection is instant all the time. IMO the Zr2 is not worth the near 90k price tag from dealers when the fully loaded TB is at 65-70
@matt13ross
@matt13ross 2 года назад
The wheels are the same size and tires are only 1.5" bigger though, should effect MPG THAT much (I don't think). The high beams don't turn on unless the road is clear, that's what intellibeam is. I'm guessing CarPlay is faster when plugged in, because it was much faster in my Colorado.

The ZR2 vs Trail Boss (re)assessment seems pretty valid considering your planned mods. I looked for months at Ford (Tremor) and Ram (Laramie w/mods) and by the time you add it all up these alternatives were noticeably more (10%+) than the GM, especially since I found a GM dealer who negotiated off of MSRP. All Ford dealers wanted $5k - $10K over MSRP. Social is full of various quality complaints on every make. The subscription stuff is going to get a lot worse - everybody is doing it and several makes seem to have worse plans than GM. "Owning" a vehicle is going to be radically different in 5 years. As always thanks for the vid Matt; very useful to learn from your experience.

All the people reporting on social media complaining when gm tried to give you a interior that wasn't expensive and now that you got the fancy interior your still complaining about it, everyone on social media did this to themselves so now just suck it up and deal with it because truck prices will be expensive from now on especially considering everyone just keeps on buying them at the prices they are and if you compare the prices the high country Silverado is a bargain compared to the Ford and ram top trim levels

Interesting and points you raise. I studied the window sticker you show at 1:34 and can't believe they don't even put the VIN, engine size, color or model anywhere. There is also no crash rating which is a bit concerning. I really don't like having to buy some kind of additional data plan so that features continue to work. We see its $200 plus per year but who knows maybe they raise the rate at some point or say they don't support the feature any more in the future... I hate the long delay on screens. Deal breakers really. I love the looks of the truck and think they did a great job on exterior styling too but quality issues are another huge problem. deforming interior door panels and paint chipping, low shock mount clearance on an off road truck....made in Mexico and they still want 71K. I believe I will pass. What's up with no steering lock???

It’s odd to me that out of all the channels I’ve seen reviewing the Zr2, you’re the only who’s truck didn’t come with all the features standard (the park assist, wheel well liners etc) did you order the truck yourself from home or did you have a dealer do it? I’m just curious because I ordered mine with my dealer and it arrived in 2 months fully kitted and nothing missing on it. And also having been in the trailboss, it just doesn’t feel as comfortable sitting in it in my opinion, still leather but it had a different texture I think. But I love the truck personally, took delivery, immediately took a road trip, off-road, muddy beaches things like that and I have no complaints. Even the infotainment systems is no where near as laggy as yours and connects as soon as I get in the truck ha, (that would drive me crazy) and as far as mpg…we got a 6.2L Brick on wheels lol. I bought a 2022 Silverado LT Trail Boss with 3.0 Duramax this September. I have 1700 miles on it. I LOVE the truck, I smile every time I drive it, it checks most of the boxes including fuel efficiency, nice interior, cool exterior, color, features etc… the only complaint and one of the biggest was the Infotainment system. I was so excited to have their newest system and it has been a disappointment in the sense that it is laggy. For a 64K truck I wanted it to be flawless and not react seconds after my actions. Once I basically got “used” to its mediocre respond time I love everything else and would recommend it to anyone. They did fix it free of charge i got the truck back in about a week or so, I guess I was fortunate. As for the LED light bulbs, that's not a big deal to me, brightening up a license plate I just don't see the purpose. I have halogen bulbs and the rear lamps I think they look great the way they are and the bulbs are cheaper to replace. I did recently deactivate the DFM with the Pulsar LT so I'm hoping I won't have any other lifter failures. I got my truck for about 34,000 the wheel to wheel step bars and it's the all-star edition. I've gone and looked at new ones, they always try to get me to trade my truck in telling me I can get what I paid for it but then I have to pay like $25,000 more for pretty much the same truck with less options so no thanks. Any high performance truck or off-road truck wouldn’t get you the best gas mileage if your worry about gas mileage then stay with normal truck or car but again majority of car/truck owner know it when they see the ads but for average joes it’s the best looking truck till they see the sticker. But owning a off-road truck comes with some pro and cons it’s all about the research if you couldn’t find info about the vehicle when they first come out then look at others that been out for a while because at the end of the research they all the same but for others is worth getting an off-road truck or not. Lifting it, adding bigger and heavy tires and wheels can lower the mpg because your adjusting the geometry of the airflow through the truck. So you need to think is it really hiding from the people on the ads or is it just basics error when buying a new first gen because how I see it and as a mechanic is a simple fix but due to the shortage and problems in the world that it will take time to get all this fix. My thing is on the Silverado zr2 is the suspension, off-road tune engine and front lockers that other competitors don’t have its nice and I agree on most things in your video not all but at the end of the day it’s just human error no machine is 100% free problems especially through out the years of vehicle manufacturers. Now for the fog lights and the auto lights some vehicles have it where you can have the auto and the fog lights but it’s annoying when driving through the fog because the high beams turns on and the fog lights turns off never like that on the Honda. The sensor/camera sensor dark spot now regular vehicle when turning the high beam the fog lights turns off it’s normal on all vehicles so it’s not a big deal and a safety feature from gm for the auto lights with the fog lights just saying

The small level kit, and slightly larger tires (same size wheels) aren't going to effect fuel mileage this much. It just sucks IMO.

My 2018 Silverado is as new as I’m going to go, not a fan of the new body style Chevy Silverado’s.

I have a 22 trailboss custom which means base model I guess lol but I wanted one with the digital dash too but I was afraid for it to crash and not being able to have it because it sit in the shop to get fixed and agreed with you on the holgen bill which they should all be led especially the head lights

Mine has all LED front end lights, which is nice for sure. I'd assume the custom is still halogen.

Yea I'm sure that's super expensive to swap all that out. LED bulbs will do the trick!

Yeah, car play has been slow on every rental cat I've been in unless you plug it in. Do you still need a data plan if you plug in the phone? The fog light thing makes sense because the sensor probably thinks the light from the fog lights would be light from another vehicle. May you should get a Bison and not mod it.

Connecting my phone doesn't give the truck data or internet, per say. So maps, speed limit, etc still don't work. I def do not want a Bison. I think they are supremely overpriced for basically bumpers and skid plates.

So, your 73K truck came without factory Nav? Also, if your using you phone for music and such you may run into the delay factor with the infotainment system.

No they have nav, but can't really be used without a data plan.
