Love the fact that you did a Monza! A 1980 Monza was my first car in Highschool, bought it for $300 back in 1989, it was black 4 cyl, 4 speed, had the motor swapped for a v6 and had a cherry bomb that was mounted under passenger seat. You could rev it and get it to shoot out a flame with the loud pop and crackle after. Loved that car. Finally started rotting out because of our Western NY winters and salt. This episode brought back a lot of memories. It was the same body style.

Back in the early 1990s, my buddies and I scored a 1980 Monza hatchback with the 3.8L V6 under the hood. The car was toast - expanding foam sculpted to replace the rusted-out A-pillars, and when you put it in reverse, the driver's side lower control arm was rusted away, so the front wheel contacted the inside of the wheel well. The Buick 231 ran like brand new so the car would still smoke the tires off. Naturally, we put a 10-day trip permit on the car, and then drove it as fast and as hard as we could over the roughest roads we could find. Rolled it, covered it in mud. The control arm still didn't break off. Bunch of teenagers riding back into town with a Monza with the roof crushed in and we're all wearing motorcycle helmets. Police car pulls right up beside us at a red light. The cop looks at us, hold up his hand like a horse's blinder, puts on his lights and sirens and blows through the red light. :) That Buick 231 3.8L V6 ended up in my 1980 Chevette. Hooker even offered a motor mount kit and headers. The V6 Chevette was scary. I grew up around cars of the 1970s and 1980s. It was very rare to see a Vega 140 engine, they had all been scrapped before I got to owning my first socket set. I think I have seen two of them in the wild, both in junkyards. Up here in Canada, the snow and salt killed the Vega/Astre/Monza/Sunbird at least as quickly as those horrible engines. The sad part is that the Vega could have been so good, but GM cheaped out and really damaged its reputation with those things.

The car is a Tank and engine is bulletproof. You be able to go anywhere with it. It's worth restoring a true automobile that the industry doesn't make anymore. You got what you paid for back then. Your a lucky man to find such a gem and family like yours.

That's a good woman you got there mate. I was halfway through a turbo upgrade and alternator replacement on a toyota landcruiser diesel engine when I fell off a ladder fixing the shed & demolished my elbow and ended up in a cast. My little woman came out to the shed and fitted the turbocharger and alternator & rewired the duel batteries exactly how I described it to her . She's a legend 🤘
