In this video we start start rust repair on our 1970 Chevy Nova junkyard rescue project. We start by cutting the dash and quarter panel off the car to begin our repairs. Instead of breaking the bank we work with what we got and make repairs to as much of the original metal and cowl as we can.

Doing patches, is the right thing to do... Replace only the bad metal... Clean up the surface rust... Don't forget, if it hasn't rusted through, in 55 yrs, if you stop the rust now, it's going to last for a really long time. A buddy of mine has replaced anything that had any rust on it... Dare I say, that there's probably only 10-15% of the original car left (I find that rather sad) Let's keep as much of the Old Iron on the road. ❤❤❤ Keep up the Great Work...

Your goals for the car are realistic, and your work looks good. No sense building a total rust bucket. On the other hand, ya gotta know where to stop! ,,,DUBS,,,,

My hat off to you pal for such an ambitious project ! No way you could do this with modern car. Hope all this work is worth it for restored great classic styled car. 😊

I agree that sometimes you have to do do what makes sense relative to what the value of the car will be when finished. I like the freedom of working on a car that isn't anything special. I feel like if you have a rare or valuable model, you are locked in to doing everything a certain way to maintain the value. With an average car, you are free to do anything you can imagine. Keep on kkepin on and thanks for the videos. Gives me inspiration. My current project is a 1976 Nova that originally came with an inline 6. I built a 383 stroker for it and am cutting down a Ford 8.8 to go in the back. Planning on a 700R4. Street/Strip but probably won't be really good at either. ;-)

Pretty cool , I’m working on a 68, bought a 72 donor car for the extra parts
@hatchsrecreationalengineer1997
Having a donor car can be a life safer for some of these parts that are not reproduced.

Not sure of the 78,000. Mine has 500,000 and is good shape.
@hatchsrecreationalengineer1997
Good point however this was a northeastern Pennsylvania car. So based off the condition of vehicles I have seen come from this area it’s pretty solid. I do agree with you though that high mileage cars can be pretty solid. My 69 has high mileage and looks far better then any of the other cars that I’ve owned but it came from California.

Where did you purchase the cowls. I got R/s from Muscle car central (AMD)and needed to split and pull apart upper inside corner and patch and weld. D/s i got from American performance (Ebay) aka Taiwan absolute junk., Is there anything made in America anymore?
@hatchsrecreationalengineer1997
@hatchsrecreationalengineer1997 6 месяцев назад
I don’t think any of it is made in America anymore. I did not buy any cowl panels for this car. I just made my own patches for the existing cowl. It the top where it rusted I spot welded brackets and seam sealed it and at the lower corners where it was rusted I used old sheetmetal from a ford econoline van and made my own lower cowl. Being that once the front end is on you don’t see any of it I wasn’t to worried how “factory” correct it looked as long as it functioned

That would be a good car to mini tub. Roll cage.
@hatchsrecreationalengineer1997
I considered the mini tub but ultimately abandoned it due to the cost of some of those kits. Also couldn’t bring myself to cut into the good frame rails. Roll cage may definitely be in this cars future tho.
