I just purchased a new iCarsoft i900 scanner based on this video. The new ones look a little different and I had no problem navigating the menus to find the SRS module. Only took a few minutes. It showed it's the right side airbag sensor. This will be the fourth time I've replaced a front impact sensor on my 2008 Silverado. Did the left about two years ago. Then the right a year ago. Then the left again about 6 months ago. Now the service airbag light is on again. Had been guessing but decided to buy a scanner to make sure this time. In my experience, the Dorman replacement sensors only seem to be lasting a year or so. May try a GM original part this time even though it's twice as much.
Wow 4 times in 2 years? That seems like a lot, maybe your right about the Dorman sensors. I have only replaced this one in the 14yrs/170k miles I've owned the truck. I also live in Florida so maybe that helps, when I lived in NY I had to change sensors more often because of the salt. Thanks for the comment Phil!
Much appreciated. It was the driver's side, bulging in the middle. Michigan winters. Heard there was a recall coming on the Takata bags, hope mine isn't involved.
Great video, very well explained. This is my 2nd install, this time to passenger side. I was apparently lucky doing my first as I neglected to disconnect the battery..won’t do that this time.
The b1000 code is for the electronic control unit. It could be the ECU itself, any sensor going into it (seats, SRS, drivetrain control ect.) or possibly just a bad connection/ground from the wiring harness. My best backyard advice would be; pull the -battery terminal, disconnect the 2 or 3 harnesses on the ECU. Look for a bad connection or corrosion, clean/lube as necessary, then re-install, then put the battery terminal back on. Disconnecting the battery will at least re-set the codes and pulling the connectors and cleaning sometimes works. If the code comes back, it's out of my scope of expertise. Hope that helps.
All the Airbag wiring has yellow connectors throughout the vehicle. Also be careful using air impact tools on any make or model with the battery connected.
Sorry if I missed it in other comments, but I also have the tire pressure monitoring warning in addition to the airbag warning. When you restarted your vehicle, both were gone. Are they related in some crazy way?
Not that I know of. I had cleared all the codes before I replaced the SRS sensor. When I started it the tire monitor was off because I cleared the codes. Tire pressure monitors take a few minutes or miles of driving before they read again.
Thank you for mentioning that you used the iCarsoft i900. My Actron CP9690 would not read the air bag code on my 2009 Silverado 1500 5.3 LT even though it costs 2 or 3 times what yours did. I'm going to order one. There are many scanners out there that claim to do SRS on these trucks but actually don't so I was looking for something fairly cheap but wanted to make sure it worked first . Turned out to be the exact same sensor on my truck also.
I payed around $100 for the icarsoft, it seemed to be a good choice because I own 2 Silverado's ('08 and '17) As many reviews mention, directions are weak but after 15 minutes of playing with it I found the menu's for SRS, ABS ect. (I think they are in "Libraries" - "body" sub menu). I appreciate the comment!
Is this just with a bad sensor issue, my truck had a passenger side collision that set my airbags off if i replaced the airbags i bought the icarsoft scanner and cleared the code from the module would that be the same thing or will i haft to replace something else
Thanks for the video.. I was going to buy a reader but watched this figured what the hell let me check that airbag sensor anyway.. and it was split right in half.. ordered new part going to change it shortly and have my buddy flash the system after.
If it was physically split in half, that's an obvious problem. Disconnecting the battery should be all you need, as long as everything is in order no flasy-thing necessary. Thanks iliketobuildstuff.
@@astrodiver1 got it fixed.. parts guy gave me the wrong part at first, and it ended up costing me nearly $700 in parts :/ but it is all fixed now. Thanks again
@@astrodiver1 was 700 cad. Got the wrong parts first which were 300, then got the correct parts for $400. We get ripped off up here, parts prices are usually 1.5-2 times what they are in the states, plus the conversion rate.
For anyone having trouble finding the Airbag diagnosis, if there are multiple options for radio type, you need to pick your radio type before you can run airbag diagnosis. This is how it is for 2005 silverado c1500. Seems counter intuitive. But once you select a radio type you can then scan for the codes on the specific systems like you can on other models. hope this helps someone
@@astrodiver1 Yes the definition said front passenger sensor. I read on a blog that the HD model Chevy trucks only have 1 sensor and mine only has 1 in the middle. Airbag light is off. 👍
I recently removed the steering wheel cover with the airbag on my 2007 Silverado to replace the damaged emblem because I had to bend the mounting clips back to secure it. I did all of this while the negative battery terminal was disconnected from the battery lead post. Anyhow, when I reinstalled everything back and started the truck, the service airbag warning indicator lit up on my instrument cluster. I'm puzzled as to what could've tripped the error code because prior to removing the airbag, i didn't see any warning lights. I ordered a CGSULIT OBD2 scan/reset tool on Amazon and will attempt to clear the code but am wondering if it's a coincidence that I have a defective impact sensor tripping the code right after I removed the airbag. It's an old truck with over 195k miles on it and i think the electrical components are starting to fail one by one, as I recently had to replace my driver side low beam bulb.
Thank you for the video! Excellent explanation. So I replaced the sensor and the service airbag notification is still showing on my dash but when I scan it using an OBD2 scanner it no longer finds any error codes it was showing B0083 prior to changing the sensor, which is great but since the scanner at autozone doesn't finds any errors there is nothing for it to clear. I don't know how to get the Service Airbag message to go away. Any ideas? I've seen some posts that mention disconnecting the battery connectors for 30 minutes, but I understand that this will reset the computer itself and that this method may not be the best idea. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Sorry Keith I just saw this. I don't remember the code I received and can't make it out from my video. Maybe both front sensors are bad? If you see this please let us know how it worked out.
Finaly, an at home video worth watching and with steady camera. Right to the point. I'll be doing this tomorrow on my 07 Sierra new body. Damn northern weather cracked mine.
yep having the exact same issue withy my 08 Silverado with aprox the same mileage. I purchased a different air bag reader just came in if it doesn't work I'll return it and get the one you used. Aprox the same price range
used kzyee pro srs reader obdii from Amazon worked fine but its saying its my passenger presence module that's bad not the impact sensor. Of course that's a much more involved and expensive repair My Luck!!
Great video here and great info from all the replying. Can anyone show me where to obtain a wire diagram for my SRS on my 2003 Silverado. I found one broken wire in the driver side seat track, so I soldered them together and still have light on. I removed the two sensors and read NO continuity across the two terminals on either of them,,,but not sure if this is a good way of bench testing them for this design sensor. Think I may need to do some "circuit circus" :(
Does that effect the head lights? ...had a old cave that would not let the daytime light work. As I was working on the heater core an had the air bage out
Where you have worked on srs for a dealership, I wonder, have you ever seen a clock spring fail just for airbag, but the steering wheel controls still work? Great video!
My 12 has the airbag light.. and my friend tried to scan it with his snap on scanner and the truck wouldnt communicate with the scanner ( for the airbag system) .. trying to figure it out.. did have some white crusty fuses.. but no difference
So I replaced my sensor but the airbag light is still on. I had the dealership run all the codes beforehand so I know for sure it was the front left impact sensor. I did not have them clear the codes yet though after I put the new one in. Any ideas? I’m not super vehicle savvy, just kinda went after this when I saw how simple it was to replace on your video. The sensor is the dorman one.
I have the same code on my truck, my right side sensor has a bulge on the front face. I assume that is the one that is bad for me? The drivers side is smooth but the passenger side isn’t.
My scan tool defines left or right, yours may not. The sensor part # is the same for both (2008 model) I would buy one sensor and replace the obvious one, if that doesn't work then just swap them.
I'm a year late but I'm currently having this problem. Now I've heard that these normally fail cause they ground through the bolt and corrode on the inside?
Good morning thank you for the video. I have 2 scan tools but they don’t read srs? Not sure what that stands for also? My wife’s 06 Envoy airbag light came on and would like to fix it. What is the scanner you used? Thank you and have a good day
Does the Icarsoft or whatever you used to connect to the laptop allow you to look at the alcohol levels of the gas? My 08 "flexfuel" 5 3 was giving CEL's, had the alcohol levels reset at a shop and it's been fine since. Would be nice to be able to do that myself.
Cool vid and helpful. Great info about disconnecting battery first but the reason why manuals advise to disconnect ground cable first (not positive) is so your bare metal wrench doesn't ground against anything. A friend was injured fairly severely in this way. Keep safe!
@@socom-king3119 How long were you connected to the 240? put a wrench or watchband across the two 240v wires and see how hot it gets before the (20A) fuse blows. A millisecond? What happens in the case of a 12V battery is your wrench (or metal watch band in the case of my friend) makes contact with the battery positive and any ground (fender, other post etc) it gets RED hot real fast from >hundreds< of amps coursing through it. Disconnect ground wire FIRST and connect last and you no longer risk such a massive short from the positive. For some fun lay a coathanger across the positive post and negative, if you don't believe me. If you don't have a car just touch some tinfoil to both ends of an AA battery. Similar on a much smaller scale. AMPS get you, volts not so much. Also your 240V was fused. No fuse involved when you short 12V source direct to ground
@@casheti The icarsoft 900 is not very intuitive for me but does do the job of reading all GM systems, however from your descriptions your '08 Sierra sounds like an electrical nightmare. Tow truck bills and weeks and multiple flat hours at a dealership.... I would move on my friend.
My airbag sensor light goes off when anybody or anything reaches down under the passenger seat...any idea what too look for ? I dont see anything disconnected but i didnt want to pull too hard incase airbag goes off. Im not sure what else to do
Push the passenger seat all the way forward. There are wire connectors under a piece of plastic, about 4x6". Pull the plastic cover off, check the wires.
when your not sure what sensor it is(driver side or passenger side) can you just unsnap it, plug in new one and start truck?without having to unscrew 10 mill bolt ?
Make sure to disconnect the battery and wait 15 minutes for any residual energy to bleed off. Never work on a SRS system without doing that first (including unplugging connectors) Otherwise that should work but a OBD that will read SRS codes should tell you exactly what sensor has the fault.
Astrodiver 1 thanks. I’m going to have to return the one I have. It shows no codes for srs faults. Could be faulty or something else. Thanks for the great video
Sorry just saw this. The code will be stored until it is cleared by the OBD, however if you completely disconnected the battery (as you should) before replacing the sensor the light should have been off if you replaced the correct component.
Astrodiver 1 thanks for the response. Yes, got the right one (08 Silverado HD only has one. Center of the vehicle on support under radiator if anyone is wondering). Have to do all the same steps as this video. Put a tester on it and I’ve got a broken line somewhere which is gonna be a joy to track down. Thanks for the video was super helpful.
Astrodiver 1 after 3+ hours and finally just pulling the wiring from the harness to the sensor I found the break. Inside the loom, looked like normal bending/moving wear and tear. Nightmare but got it knocked out.
I would have to say no. The sensors are not cheap and if diagnostics say replace "this one" I would do that. Don't know what the reason for the single sensor failure but the other original sensor is still working 2 years (14 years total) since the replacement of 1 of 2 front impact sensors.
Brian, there are codes stored but your scan tool is not capable of reading them. You have 2 choices. Buy a scan tool that is specific to your year and model ( because manufactures use many proprietary codes specific to their in house systems ) or take it to a shop and have them read the codes.
For disconnecting Battery always start from negative post!!! Always, because if you start from Posi tive and tough with your tool to teh vehicle body it could be big deal ((((
I agree. Good point, Negative off first positive on first. I may have been thinking my 80's training to bleed down the electrical system or just not thinking.
Ebay I just checked and they have an updated version? for $119 usd. I payed $100 for mine but that was 18 months ago. The newer model has more buttons. LoL
@@ccccen It was code for my passenger airbag that came on, because it was partially disconnected and weren't making a signal from module which is under passenger seat. I reconnect it, airbag light went off. Thanks for reply and video though, it's still good to know.
They're easy to change, while changing one, you might as well change both since went the other will follow. It's a 1/2 hr job. they are not cheap , it's the labor that's expensive but you can do it yourself once you see them. Why pay somebody over $100 to change them :)
