Lol ive never seen a sbc loose oil pressure from a broken oil pump drive plastic retainer breaking . Ive pulled mainy oil pans and found them in the bottom or pulled distributors and the oil pump rod has came out with the distributor but never lost oil pressure from one missing . Ford does the same thing in there 302 and 351 but its a metal retainer worse thing that happens they come out with the distributor. That updated oil pump drive shaft is actually for high-performance applications and high volume oil pumps because they've been known this shear the oil pump driveshaft because of the additional drag it takes to turn a high pressure or high volume high pressure oil pump . They are also a higher quality Steel usually made from tool steel and not cast like the factory one it's a good upgrade but as for that nylon goody they go for over 100,000 miles and there still be where it belongs . They don't even use those rods in remanufactured Motors they use plastic it's one of those things it's a small investment for a little peace of mind . My thoughts on the oil pickup clearance is I set the the pickup level or Square with the bottom of the pan because the closer it is to the bottom of pan the more likely to suck the garbage from the bottom pan . I do believe welding is a good idea or just tacking them in place . I have many aftermarket pumps that I've installed and the sumps do not fit right poorly or loosely . And in rare cases I have seen some sumps come off and fall in the bottom of a pan mainly on remanufactured Motors because of some poison. Installed correctly .

Sir, I had a 67 El Camino. I put a 74 400 small block in it. Engine ran great but had low oil pressure. I installed a Big Block oil pump in it. I now had 50 pounds hot of oil pressure. It was a direct bolt on. It was a Melling oil pump. Later I found out this engine had a bad camshaft. A Crain cams along with a Edeldblock 2101 performer intake and a 650 spread bore. I could pass anything but a gas station. Those were the days.

Melling is good stuff for sure and you are correct those where the days ... thank you for watching

Do I have to weld it
@CountryMileGarage
@CountryMileGarage 8 месяцев назад
No you don't have to it's more of a precaution because the last thing you want is the pickup tube to fall off and lock your engine up. Thank you for watching
