Interesting... I saw the original BLM statement. I did not realize that it had been removed. My opinion as a Black woman... If you don't stand by your convictions, it feels pretty disingenuous. It was probably better to never have said anything at all. Very good video! You presented facts and you were fair. You are entitled to your opinions!

I 💯 agree. It is sad to learn a company isn’t willing to be vocal about black lives mattering because they don’t want to offend some of their customers (even though it’s clearly NOTHING anyone should be offended about), but to go a step further and make a statement and then take it back? That hurts.
@lanetteb8744

I just searched through the Facebook page after I leaving this comment and I did see that she addressed it and vocally confirmed her support for black lives in a different thread. I do not think it was a good choice for her to remove the post what so ever (extremely bad one and very hurtful), but I do think she was meaning to be sincere and showed willingness to learn in her comments afterwords. It looks like she held community chats after the fact for those who wanted to participate. I am still absolutely disappointed, but I feel a little better that the issue wasn’t completely swept under the rug like it is so many other places. I am tired of seeing companies value having a safe space for white people over black lives. I’m sure you are too. But at the end of the day, admitting that they have a lot to learn is at least a step in the right direction. Just felt the need to clarify.

I had absolutely no idea about the BLM comment! I just recently got into Chic Sparrow and did order my first journal but I noticed some odd things that she cleared up perfectly in the video, in regards to made in the US and the scratches and tears on the leather. As a person of color myself I feel like that was very cowardly of her to take the statement down and is offensive to a degree. It all just seems like a marketing approach. I also feel like some Chic sparrow products are over-priced.

I love love LOVE these in depth reviews. I'm glad that you're using your experience as a leather worker to give insights into the products. The technical aspects of the creation of a notebook are interesting but I really valued the points you shared at the end, especially the marketing process. Kudos to CS for knowing how to speak to their demographic but I prefer having all the information up front and readily available and you provided just that!

So. First, I appreciate your video. I disagree with some points and agree with others. I disagree with your stance on the handmade aspect. I personally think that if there’s a person sitting at a sewing machine putting a notebook together, I consider that homemade. That being said, I don’t particularly care either way since I can’t hand stitch or machine stitch lol. I was exceptionally bothered by Jennifer’s backtrack on BLM. Possibly just as much as her backtrack, I was bothered by the negative response by so many people in the group to her original statement. I want to say that PERSONALLY, I don’t believe that Jennifer is racist. I believe that SHE BELIEVES in her original statement. I was profoundly saddened to see that she bent to the pressure of uninformed people (I see some of those people in the comments of this video) and chose to do what was easy instead of what was right. I was brought up as a Christian, so I know that SHE KNOWS that God has called his people to stand strong in adversity and that he will bless those that do what’s right. Backpedaling on her BLM statement is the opposite of that. If this situation was a test, I can’t see how she passed. Temporary peace in a Facebook group isn’t worth denouncing your beliefs in my opinion. Black. lives. matter. I don’t care how many people I piss off when I say it. I don’t want to know those people anyway. If that’s not good business, I guess I’m glad I don’t own a business. As a white person, how she handled the situation hurt me so badly. I can’t imagine how her Black/POC customers felt. I hate that it happened, and I hate that I no longer can support a company that I loved for so many years. This *isn’t* political. Lives ARE NOT political. EQUALITY is not POLITICAL. Anyone who makes it political is missing the point and their opinions belong in the garbage. Sorry, this just bothers me a lot. I appreciate your thoughts and applaud your even tempered responses to some of these truly heinous comments you’ve gotten on this video. Thank you.

Thank you for your comment! I agree with everything you said, and also that it is indeed handmade, like everything leather or fabric is. That's why I go through each step to show just how "handmade" something is. Realistically, since all leather goods require a pair of hands to use the sewing machine, I figured that it's less meaningful to look at the binary (handmade vs. machine made), and more helpful to look at it on a continuum. The distinction between hand stitch and machine stitch has more implications on the way the threads and weaved around itself and the types of threads used than anything else. And thank you so much for your discussion on BLM. I too, don't think that there was any I'll intention behind retracting the statement, but an action like that could hurt many people of color who are already hurting, and I personally would prefer to stand behind a maker than stands behind their support for black lives despite push-backs.

You did an excellent and measured job with the discussion of Jennifer's business practices. Because TBH, it's really easy and there is A LOT OF MATERIAL to take it much further. I've never seen a business owner be as controlling about her product as her. She is inflexible and doesn't take constructive criticism well (lordy, the whole "orphan" notebook drama with her...that's what really turned me off). I think you summed it up pretty well...her products are great, they are good quality. Her business practices and her treatment of people who aren't sycophantic is a huge problem.

Leona Rodriguez people asked her to change the name from “orphan” to something else. As an adoptive parent myself, I agreed as it made a connotation between “orphan” and damaged/2nd quality. Jennifer pitched a fit about it. She could not see one glimmer of the point at all. She eventually changed the name to second change, but not after some drama.

Thank you for addressing the controversy. I'm not active on Facebook so I wouldn't have known. As a brown woman, I am uncomfortable with the sheer amount of white ladies in the community because what if they think people who look like me deserve to be spat at? Bombed? Deported? Thrown in a cage? There's no way of knowing unless there's an explicit statement and continued solidarity. Also, social justice has been relegated to a fad. White people like to say BLM then they never follow through with any sort of real change or advocacy. To them, it begins and ends with voting. Caring about others means doing something. I would love to support WoC cover makers so a list or video with recs would be fantastic.

When I ordered my first Chic Sparrow, it was a Creme Black Beauty-Classic, Personal size and....i feel that the edges weren't burnished enough or something like that bcuz it had a lot of "threads" or "bits of leather fraying all around it". I was surprised to see that bcuz I know they usually have clean, straight and they always look well finished online in their shop. I never told them about it bcuz I doubt they could do anything about it lol and I wasn't in-love with my very first Chic Sparrow (I was actually a little bit disappointed with how it looked). I was also scared to trim it at first, then after I heard leather doesn't "run" like nylon stockings and one day I trimmed it finally. It was bothering me for a long time lol. I still feel like it needs to be burnished but I'm not sure how to do it plus I don't wanna do it myself bcuz whats the point in buying the supplies if I'm only going to use them once? I don't know how to do it properly anyways lol. I also never realized that their elastic are tighter then other. I have only Chic Sparrow...now I'm thinking about changing them. I also have always thought about why Classics aren't cheaper too bcuz like you said they are not hand cut and less work goes into making them when compared to the Deluxe. Thank you for all the information you've shared. It's super helpful 😁
@eberhartstudio3547
@eberhartstudio3547 3 года назад
I don't think you can burnish that leather since it's not a veg tanned leather, but you can apply a clear coat of edge paint. You can check your local Tandy leather stores if you have one near by for them. One bottle lasts for a while and you can just use q tips to apply it. Other makers do something like that too to leathers that can't be burnished!

I fell down the Chic Sparrow rabbit hole last year, and before 6 months I had brought and sold over 60 covers till I realized it was too much. I prefer the classic covers, because I didn’t like how she designed the pockets for the deluxe. I agree the price point for the classic is ridiculous. I now own a rainbow collection of CS standard covers and am not purchasing any leather covers from another company. I am satisfied with what I have. I’m Ok with the FOMO. I also felt like some people on the CS FB community were a little cultish..... There’s no room for objective opinions in the group and there were members there that would rally around the owner in an uncomfortable way to placate her ego if an option slipped threw the cracks. Their are definitely wonderful people there but the few minions were too much I couldn’t participate anymore. And am very glad to have that out of my system.

I think that saying the leather is only sourced from the meat industry is very misleading, not because it’s not true, but because you can’t prove that every single hide came that way. Especially if you purchase leather from Europe. The maverick is water buffalo, I don’t see many people eating water buffalo in the USA. Maybe they do outside of the USA, but can you really prove that claim? It’s like saying ethical Diamonds, the only ethical Diamond is a lab grown Diamond. So I agree with you about chic sparrows marketing.

Thank you for this review, I learned a lot. I really like my CS collection. Did not know about the BLM drama and it's so disappointing to learn about this. I don't mind so much that they sew their leathers using a sewing machine. I have purchased handbags, slg and other accessories from other makers (local, small business owners etc.) that use machine stitching and would still consider that hand made. As for the made in the USA marketing, I believe that the FTC has rules about what exactly that means, so even if they source the leather from other countries it might still be considered as made in the USA.
@eberhartstudio3547
@eberhartstudio3547 4 года назад
I don't mind sewing machines either, I just have trouble with them framing the impressions from the presser foot as "because it's handmade". Also, I think saying made in the USA is very fair to say, but they do go a step further and say that they source everything from the USA whenever possible... Which is not a well defined thing and they do have a LOT of leathers that are not from US tanneries.

Great and thorough video! I am a former customer that really loved their products but stopped giving them my hard earned money and left their Facebook group. When I saw what happened with the BLM statement, I decided that the group was not a group I wanted to be a part of. I had no interest being in a group where such important matters was considered “bothersome” to others. And I certainly had no interest in supporting a company who chose to cater to those delicate individuals and not stand their ground. She could have easily left the statement and then asked people to keep their comments to the product. It’s clearly her prerogative to do whatever she wishes just as it’s mine to stop supporting businesses whose practices i don’t approve of. It was even more of a turnoff then businesses who said nothing at all....so much so, I stopped using the covers I owned!

I think Chic Sparrow is a wonderful company and has great products. They are not a large company. AND since this is a private company they can do what they want. You can criticize all you want but this is a country of choice. You do not have to purchase from them if you are not happy. I feel Jennifer is a real person and is as honest as she can be. Updated information: Chic Sparrow is going to be using a cream burnishing agent from now on on their veg tanned leathers, according to their IG post and comments. Questions for Jennifer: * Since Jennifer graciously offered for me to email her for more information, I thought that we might as well have that conversation here for everyone to see. Instead of just asking "what did I get wrong in the video" since she doesn't have time to rewatch the video, I have come up with the things that I might have gotten wrong because I wasn't sure of them when I was making the video. 1. Are the Outlander leathers a few different kinds of "excel type" leathers? Are they from Horween, or a different tannery making an "excel type" leather? 2. Since you only work directly with the tanneries for some but not most of your leathers, how do you make sure that all of your leathers come from the meat industry? 3. Do you use any machines or devices for painting edges? What about setting hardware? 4. What is your definition of "natural variation"? 5. What factors contribute to your decisions to buy leathers from a US vs. overseas tannery? 6. What are the tooling leathers you use for the hand-tooled collection? Are those also from Wickett & Craig? Thank you for taking some time and feel free to pick and choose which questions you respond to, if any at all. And to everyone watching and reading the comments, I hope this is helpful to you!

Sure I'll do my best to answer your questions, please forgive me if I don't overly elaborate, I only have a few minutes. 1. Outlander has been several different types of leathers, the current ones are and excel type leather but not from Horween. I buy it from a third party and I don't know if the tannery that makes it, only that it isn't from Horween. 2. I work with a couple tanneries, and I've developed relationships with them, as one naturally does with years of partnership, and I've asked them directly where they get the hides. They have told me that it comes from the food industry. Mind you, I do not use this as a marketing tactic, it's only brought up with a person concerned with the treatment of animals asks me about it. Not 100% of leathers do come from the food industry but the Leather industry is heavily reliant on it. 3. All of our edges are hand-dyed (we don't use edge paint, it peels off eventually, dye lasts much longer) with a wool dye dauber. We have never used water as a finishing agent for the edge burnishing, we have always used a blend of creams and waxes. I actually show how to get a beautiful edge on Instagram, if you want to check it out. 4. I define Natural Variation as is anything that happened to the hide while the animal was living and caused a mark, or mole or something interesting, and any naturally occurring variation that might happen during the leather making process. 5. I prefer to buy from U.S. tanneries because there are so few of them and I want to keep them in business. But, if there is a beautiful leather from another country and I can get it from one of my third party suppliers, I'm happy to do so. I don't deal with any out of country tanneries directly because I can't buy in large enough quantities. Also, they are often contracted to make the leathers I want for the third parties forcing me to buy from the third party anyway. 6. Yes our hand tooled leather comes from Wickett & Craig. I would like to also add, that I am 100% open to any and all constructive feedback. I feel as humans we can sharpen each other help one another become better. Which is what I try to do each and every day. Learn from my mistakes when I make them and do better the next day. I'm so grateful for every opportunity to learn and for people like you giving me the opportunity to do so. Please let me know if you have any more questions, I'll be happy to answer. Have a superb day!

@eberhartstudio3547 4 года назад
@@jennifer0847 Thanks for responding so quickly! I have a few follow-up question: 2. As I mentioned, I am mostly asking about the leathers from the tanneries that you don't directly work with. Like the few third party resellers you mentioned, or Tandy. As for the marketing part - I've seen a few of your PR people making big claims about them, especially one recently where a PR person of yours with a large following made the claim that meat industry leathers are more expensive (obviously not true) while referring to your brand. How much involvement do you have in what the PR people say and do you correct them if they disclose inaccurate information? 3. I saw the video and am glad to see a new burnishing agent being used. In the video you showed hand burnishing but in a behind-the-scenes video on RU-vid, you showed machine burnishing. Do you do a mixture of both for your products? I have seen somewhat inconsistent burnishing results on your Wickett & Craig leathers, some smooth and beautiful while others not so much. Is this due to a difference in burnishing methods/agent being used at different times, or inconsistency in production? Thanks again for your response!
@jennifer0847
@jennifer0847 4 года назад
Eberhart Studio I asked the sales men where the leather comes from, they said the food industry. I could dig deeper if you need me too? A leathers expense depend on the grain, the quality of the hide the way it’s processed. People who are sent PR are never told what to say or obligated in anyway to say anything. I have about 25 people on my PR list and not all of them post videos or do any kind of social media at all and I’m fine with that. I still send them stuff and if they like it they share. If someone made a video about the meat industry and leather can only imagine that it was an important to that person. Yes if someone gives false information (99.99% of the time it’s unintentional) I do make efforts to help them out with the correct information. But PR people are never told what to say. They are given an information sheet so they know what the have. I apologize for the inconsistency in the edges. I’ll work in further training with the individual responsible for the edges. When I demonstrate how to do things I use what is easy for the person wanting to learn to acquire and get similar results. The burnisher we use is the same as hand burnishing, except it spins so you don’t have to. The results are the same. The tools I use are standard for the leather workers industry. They are operated by hand and none of them are automated Except the engraving machine. I hope that helps.

Eberhart Studio I’m not sure how to link on my cell phone, on Chic Sparrows RU-vid the video is titled “Jennifer Harvey has been keeping secrets” she briefly speaks on a tea company then moves into telling where she buys each individual leather and who to contact if you would like to purchase that particular leather in bulk. ❤️

Thank you for sharing it! I love that she made sure to mention where people could buy those leathers. What I said in the video is still true, though, since most of the companies she mentioned are US resellers of leathers from overseas tanneries. A lot of leathers I love are from other countries, but I know some people might care more about where the tanneries are located so hopefully the information I included could be helpful to them.

Eberhart Studio most definitely I’m sure some people would like to take that into account. I am speaking solely on the fact that she supports American business in the buying of her leather. Where those companies source their leather from is probably all over the world. To my knowledge there isnt a clear definite way of knowing if the cow came from America or different part of the world. Either way to each their own, I respect your opinions.🤗

I've gotten big rolls of elastics from Etsy before and they are pretty soft! I've also had some luck with Aliexpress for soft elastics!

One thing I really dislike is the font of their logo, which they stamp on every cover. I feel like when you are producing something that is essentially a customizable accessory, you should leave as much of a neutral canvas for the customer to add their own personal touches. I think it would have been much better if they had used a simpler, more neutral font, this one is just too characterful in a bad way.

I was considering getting two. I enjoyed this video. I wavered halfway through, but at the end when you talked about politics - I decided for sure. I’m ordering two Mr. Darcy covers right away. 80 bucks seems fair, and I’m sick of cancel culture. The second that is brought up, I smell an “agenda”

There was no agenda on my end. I only said that I personally wouldn't want to purchase for those reasons, and did not ask for any kind of "cancelation". Hope you enjoy your new covers. I'm glad that you found this video helpful for you to find a seller that aligns with your beliefs.

The statement and retraction was not about BLM not mattering. BLM is not about black lives but a has moved into a divisive political agenda ( Marxist) please open up a history book and educate yourself on the matter . You are trying to do the same thing by politically dividing people by" implying" that she might be racist . You do not have to subscribe to BLM movement to support Black Lives . You are ironically doing the same thing you say she is doing by calling her out . No one should have to claim that they support black lives any more than they should be forced to wave a banner saying I support Christians, LGBTQ, Jewish lives , Mexicans, or Muslim lives . Leave politics and religion out of the work place , be professional , be kind and respectful to all as Jennifer and everyone I have ever dealt with at Chic Sparrow is.

Some people care about the positions businesses take and some don't. Just like no one can force you to stop supporting a business, for some people they would choose to support other businesses instead if it matters to them. Political agenda or not, people are allowed to have their preferences for the types of business they support and in your case, you just have a different preference from mine. I am very well educated so thanks for your concern, but if you have any "history books" you would like to recommend I am open to suggestions.

@@eberhartstudio3547 Of course people can make choices but they should be based on facts not assumptions as you made. She never said anything because it is honestly none of your business. As a woman in business it's unkind and very unprofessional to throw accusations about anyone's moral character.

You seem to be really hung up on this one thing I mentioned out of a 50 min video so I shall clarify for anyone else that's reading the comments. Was there initially a statement about BLM? Yes. Was it removed later? Yes. Do I PERSONALLY feel weird about it and PERSONALLY don't like it? Yes. All 3 are facts and I never once called anyone in the company anything. Unless you have anything actually of value to add to this discussion, I will stop responding because it seems to me that what you are claiming that I was doing was simply not true. I'm simply presenting information and my goal was never to be kind, but to be informative. Sorry that I'm not a professional RU-vidr that you wanted, and I hope that you can find others that fit your standards.

She has all her loop holes to get out of being responsible for her products and screwups! My personal experience.... and some of her cronies are nothing but adult bullies that defend anything the queen does.... (codependent personality issues, high school drama has been my experience with a few of the groups that follow her with tons of rules, really? Feel important policing every sale?) some people ruin everything..... a few bad eggs.... there are much better communities, keep looking.... has been my experience... if you have a problem and state it... you will be shunned. Even removed...

Based on your replies to intelligent comments on this video, you’re obviously easily offended when called out about your, in my opinion, bullying type “opinions”. You take direct jabs at Jennifer and her company and personally I find them greatly unfounded. You basically call her a liar and racist because you didn’t like something. Well, I’ll be the odd one out here and be a little rude in saying I had a very difficult time listening to you speak but I don’t see anyone on here giving their opinion that others shouldn’t listen to you cause you don’t speak properly, in their opinion. If you don’t like her products, so be it, but you do, as you stated. But to say basically she’s a terrible Person because she chose not to get involved in a very controversial matter is just shit, tbh. I think the BLM movement is political at its core and causing extreme destruction and there are much better ways to “protest” but that doesn’t mean that I get to bash the next guy for thinking it’s a good thing or disagreeing with me. Some people find it best to stay out of CONTROVERSIAL issues such as the BLM for very reasons like this. If you say or don’t say something, someone’s going to complain about it and you made that point very clear. I personally hope people do not take your “personal” opinion seriously as it’s based on personal beliefs and nothing to do directly with CS or their products.

I didn't say any of those things in my video and only talked about the company, and not any individual. All I've done in the comments is asking for proof and no one that "called me out" has been able to do that. I appreciate your input on the political part but like you said, that whole part is just my opinion and I very clearly said it's my personal preference. Like I said to many others, if anything I said was wrong, please correct me with evidence.
