People from Chicago know that southside gets so much attention because of the musical artists and their beefs/murders, but the westside is crazy. Westside brings on so much money too. Stand around for 10 minutes on a street like Trumbull and you'll see them serve 25 or 30 people
Being from the west side and watching this and seeing the blocks I use to drive pass to get to my people house makes me so happy I left chicago a year ago. I don’t plan on going back. The streets can’t have my boys I’m sorry.
I stayed there for about a couple months not too long ago. Met a few nice families on the block my friend lived. A couple nights, we listened to music, and danced a little in the street. Had a good time. They did tell me after a couple weeks though, that I shouldn't be walking around myself in the hood. And do your shopping, early in the day. Take a short drive east, to Tony's Mkt. Nice store. My friend moved a couple years ago, I haven't been back, but had some invites, from those I met there. Good people. I'm hoping they're alright. No contact for a wee while now.

Any cop in Da Hood will tell you that the reason it's so hard to solve crimes there is because nobody wants to talk to the police, yet gang members turn informant all the time. Was at a block party in West Garfield Park last summer when a car pulled up and started shooting. The first round got about 6 inches from my head. The west side is much smaller than the south side is but the Herion trade that exists in this part of the city is what truly drives it to be the most violent part of Chicago.

Lifelong Chicagoan here. Can confirm this is true. I lived 3 blocks away from O block and would (cautiously) walk alone by myself but you could not get me out of my car in west Garfield park. It’s an open air drug market, they don’t even try to hide it.
I'm a white boy, but a retired GD, & East & West Garfield Park was my stomping grounds in the mid 80s, till early 2000's when I moved to Nevada, & was really able to go to pretty much ANY black hood in Chicago, regardless of gang, because I was an anomaly out there, but the Latono hoods, that's a different subject.....😂
I want to clarify that Chicago isn’t as dangerous in general as most people seem to think. The truth is that a lot of this city is great and safe (so long as you keep your nose out of others business like every other American city), but the bad parts are REALLY bad. It’s honestly not even describable tbh. When you go to these places it’s so bad that it just completely oppresses your soul and makes you feel hopeless. We gotta fix our city and the perception of it
Exactly.. I'm a white boy farmer from the middle of nowhere wisconsin, and i recently moved to chicago. Everyone in my family was shocked I liked it here. I've been around garfield park, 63rd, the wild hundreds, ect and as long as you keep your nose out of other people's business you will be just fine. Even when people are fighting in front of you, just act like you're not there and they won't touch you. It's all about being cool and not acting sketchy. And no matter the race, there are alot more good people than bad down here. I absolutely love the city and the people.

As a guy that lives in Chicago, specifically on the west side. I find it funny how people who don’t live in Chicago believe the south side is the most dangerous part of Chicago. Back in the early 2010’s when drill music was at its peak, the Austin area on the west side of Chicago was the most deadliest part of Chicago.
The Southside is known as being more dangerous because it's bigger. So it's more murders on this end. Westside is smaller, but has a couple neighborhoods with outrageous murder rates tho. We shouldn't be arguing which side is worse because all that shit is bad fam.

It’s wild cause I have a cousin that lives in like a gentrified part of the westside, anytime I ever asked him if Chicago is crazy as they say, he always says “the real danger is on the westside but it doesn’t get as much media coverage”. Crazy, the westside also much more well known for selling drugs
Man tbh i really dont feel to safe out west its alot smaller so there isn't room to hide the south side is huge i find it easier to avoid the bad areas the west side is just like a black hole just sucks you in
West side is an open air drug market. They care about making money more than shooting. They’ll shoot you if you mess with the business but not over something petty. The southside has some small scale dealers but it’s mostly a few guys selling for their block of gangbangers and they all shoot each other over stupid stuff.

Graduated from Navy boot camp in 2004 and got lost in down town Chicago walking around. A subway security guard stopped my friends and I probably seen me wearing my dress whites from walking into south side and said if we walk one more block a good chance we will not be walking out. It just started turning around before the recession (ironically crime didnt rise much during). Apparently tho, a lull in crime was due to police arresting a large array of gang leaders, but many are out now, and causing problems again.
? Have you been to Pilsen? Pilsen proper has does a 180 in fhe past 10-20 years. Humboldt Park also starting to turn, and bits of Gage Park. Little village just staying the same tho, despite its commercial areas being only second to the Mag Mile.
More mysterious maybe to the outside world, since they don't do the rap and social media as much. Supposedly it's always been just as turned up. It just didn't have the same "drill scene" representation.

Im from Chicago and have lived here my entire life. I think what leads to so much happening is a few things. Its somewhat more densely populated than a lot of areas in the southside. Also, you have so many blocks dealing, literally every other nlock is a dope spot (sometimes different dealers are less than one block from each other) And the highway 290 runs right through west Garfield park. Ive seen tons of national tv news segments talking about "heroin highway. "

Those areas are way more extreme than a typical hood in another US city or even most Chicago hoods. The frequency of shootings and blatant open air drug dealing is more comparable to hood in a South America. Only a few other places like that in the US
Well i can say this from experience. Things may have changed a bit for sure but back when i was in the streets in Chicago u wouldnt be able to walk into my "hood" without getting "checked" which would consist one or more of us a possible gun in your stomach, patting u down and looking for tattoos (never robbing anyone) asking u "what u is, where u from and what u doing round here?" & that would go for anyone of the Hispanic persuasion 15 years old and up. Thats when gang banging was still at a peak and we were out on the block on every corner whistling back and forth to each other in what we called "patrolling" the hood. I dnt see or experience that anymore but then again im a civilized person NOT in or near those areas anymore.

Chicago really needs to build better/new rail infrastructure in west and southwest sides of fhe city. Letting less well of people access free services is one step toward creating a better generation.

I used to live in Humboldt Park, which is 2 neighborhoods east of Austin, and one neighborhood north of West Garfield Park. The most shocking part about this area of the city is how you can go from relative economic prosperity to absolute poverty in just a couple of blocks. In particular, Austin is right next to Elmwood Park and Forest Park, which are two of the wealthiest suburbs in the entire state. You literally cross a street and you can instantly tell when you've entered Austin. People here still get by though. Austin is not nearly as bad as it used to be, but unfortunately we can't say the same for West Garfield Park. If you go anywhere outside of the area where the Garfield Park Conservatory is located, you're putting yourself at risk of being carjacked or shot if it's dark out. (Or sometimes even if it's daytime).
East Garfield Park is okay. I don’t really have any issues there. It’s just west of the park that is still a disaster. I have taken the green line to Pulaski a few times then walked south; it is nothing but vagrants, tweakers, and drive-up dealings right next to me.
@@ChicagoMike97 Pulaski is a nightmare from north to south. I don't know what happened to that corridor but the entire thing is destitute--Homeless people, violence, carjackings, robberies, you name it. That was the one area of Irving Park that made me a little nervous when I lived there.
