PORTAGE, MI -- "It's for fun. And it's not because we can't afford it," Brianna Franks said with a laugh.
"It's a beautiful day in February," Franks said. "There's nowhere I'd rather be than at Chick-fil-A on a 70-degree day in February in Michigan."
She and her husband Andrew each took a vacation day from work and arrived at 5:40 a.m. Wednesday to be among the first 100 people to access the new restaurant at 6202 S. Westnedge Ave.
The restaurant set to open at 6 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 23.
For their dedication, they will receive digital cards that entitle each of them to a year's worth of Chick-fil-A meals -- actually 52 free meals that can be had all at one time or in any amount per visit, until the card is exhausted. It is part of a 4-year-old pre-opening promotion called First 100 done across the country by Atlanta-based Chick-fil-A.
Chick-fil-A is a group of more than 2,120 restaurants known for its chicken breast sandwiches, promoted in a catchy television advertising campaign in which cows humorously urge people to "Eat More Chickin.'"
The Franks were among 60 people who pitched tents early in the day outside the just-built restaurant to participate. The unseasonably warm weather was a help. People registered for the free giveaway as temperatures approached 60 degrees. Those who camped out for the Jan. 12 opening of the Chick-fil-A restaurant in Grand Rapids, the restaurant group's first location in West Michigan, braved freezing rain and weather in the 30s.
