I have raised chickens most my life . I was given corturnix quail when I was around 12 . I am 53 now . I prefer quail. I have a electric grinder , so I can grind grains and more to add to the mix . I also grow sprouts . We grow enough to have 3 meals a week for our family from the quail plus the eggs . We also make sausage , jerky and more from the quail.

At first , I didn’t like the quail and they eat a lot until they are full grown. I now love them and dislike the chickens. Chickens will ruin the garden and they are quite loud. Quail, easy to butcher and they are pretty quiet overall.

We live out in the country and have all kinds of birds... If we lived in the city we would probably raise more quail, but out in the country it is more cost effective to raise chickens for food. We raise 1 batch of cornish cross chickens a year and let our egg laying hens hatch out a few clutches a year of our dual purpose birds. The main reason we raise quail is for pickled quail eggs.

I’ve just started setting up a breeding operation and have been documenting my process here on RU-vid. I used to breed quail about 5 years ago. I’d definitely choose quail over chicken if I had to pick between the two. I live in suburbia so smaller poultry works best for me. Thanks for the video!

Useful stuff. My family is moving into a similar backyard kinda situation soon (1/4 acre plot with neighbors on all sides), and strongly leaning to raising quail for eggs and meat to go along with veggie stuff we'll grow. Seems the best option for small spaces.

Thanks Mr. Chris! Very good thoughts. Appreciate your time & efforts. One thought, not applicable to all, is one can keep a fair number of quail indoors without much problem. If their manure is dry there is virtually no bad smell. Can't do that with chickens...your house would smell like a diaper pail....

@@joanncreekmore4067 I started with 8 jumbo coturnix quail, indoors. Ended up with 86 within a year, but I was doing some tricks with increasing fertilization. Was given a British battery hutch which I modified for quail & it was a great blessing. Tall, but with a smallish footprint. The ONLY time aroma was an issue indoors at all was during the time they were in the brooder pen when their waste is moist. That required twice daily cleaning of the pen. Once they were old enough to go to the grow-out portion of the hutch, (3 weeks or so), there was no smell at all. A restaurant opened next door & as we had a suspended ceiling & shared the attic space, the health department put a nix on the quail, which, I think, was understandable & prudent. I thoroughly enjoyed my flock & all that they taught me. I just moved to a new place where I can raise them again, this time outside. I wish you all the best on your endeavor & endorse without a single reservation you learning here from Mr . Chris @ Slightly Rednecked. Listen & learn from him & you won't go wrong. The other RU-vid guys are good, no question, but they're raising 300 to thousands of quail. Chris just does a couple dozen for meat & eggs and looks at the entire process in a more cordial, friendly, homespun, manageable kind of way that serves the small or hobby quail raiser. May God bless your journey with success. -John.

@@joanncreekmore4067 My.pleasure. You don't need roosters if you are just gathering eggs. The hens will begin to lay one egg per day (provided they get 14-16 hours of light per day) at about 8-10 weeks of age, & will continue to do that for about 3 years, without ever having been with a rooster. A rooster is required only if you want to incubate eggs to increase your flock. Otherwise you don't need one. The hens will just do what they do without one.

I have both, 5 backyard hens and my small colony of quail. Chickens are definitely louder and require more space, however IMO they are more hands off and require less attention than my quail. I probably check on my hens once every few days and they tend to take care of themselves. My setup for my quail is pretty much hands off as well, but I probably wouldn't trust them to not kill themselves if I don't check once a day lol.

I have been raising quail for four years. Decided to hatch out six chickens. 3 never hatched and three were roosters. I can't have them in my town. It took six months to hear them crow and realize they had to go. Quail are the best. I actually find the quail smarter as well, they are calmer than the noisy chickens. Give them some sand to roll in and they are so happy.

I have both, in a small backyard. Fortunately my town does not have many restrictions regarding to livestock. Being very new to quail is probably my biggest challenge. At this time I'm not getting anything but drama from my quail. I'm not willing to give up on them, but at this time, they are more work than the chickens.

I am just getting Quail on Thursday and want to be set up, game bird feed is harder to find. I do have three Lavender Orpington chicks so already have starter. I am guessing you would use non medicated starter? Thank you I enjoy your videos....☺️

Very interesting video! I am primarily thinking of raising ducks (great for eggs and meat and good temperament) but wanted a back up producer that won't destroy the garden. Weird question I know, but if you're keeping about 15 or so birds in one cage and three males in there, how often do you swap out/kill the males to ensure that inbreeding doesn't occur and keep your flock healthy? Thank you!

It's funny when you consider the viability of Chickens over Quail when defending themselves. Quail are so soft, weak and pathetic they dont even try to peck or scratch when they feel threatened. You could even hold literally the most violent Quail in your hand and they'll never be able to physically do anything to you. Chickens though can be vicious. Aside from being extreme omnivores that will eat literally anything they can fit in their mouths, they have some nasty talons and weight behind them and they can easily take on rats and snakes. A broody Chicken will fight to the death to protect babies. And dont even get me started on Roosters; they can manhandle even large hawks with ease. You ever see a Rooster take on an eagle? They are raptors through-and-through, and any lack of intelligence or tact they make up for with reckless bravery and pure primal ferocity.
