Thanks, Mr. Chris. When I first started with backyard quail, the data available was just overwhelming. Almost chose to not do it at all. Way too much conflicting information. Stumbled across your Slightly Rednecked channel several years ago & was home. Not knocking the other guys, but I wasn't looking to raise 2000 birds, just a few for meat, eggs, and enjoyment. Your advice was ideal for 8 birds back then & equally applicable when I had 86. It works so there was no need to fix it. It's been an enjoyable ride the entire way & your counsel had helped me, and countless others no doubt, all along the way. When asked about how to go about raising quail or rabbits, I help them of course, but without exception I also send them here. From purchasing or collecting eggs, to THE best series on incubation & increasing hatch rates, to care & feeding, to practical hutch design, to processing, to the best Q&A out there in your Thursday night live broadcasts, even to your marinade to cook the little darlings, it's all right here. Two habitual themes appear in your videos are most appreciated: 1) "don't stress about it", & 2) "God bless". Both are clearly essential. Thank you so very much.

Hi! I've been feeding mine a commercial 20° game bird all flock feed, but it got too expensive. I just found a local grain store that's half the price. AND I started SOAKING it. They love it and it uses even less, so I save more! Mine do great on 20°

Great video. Important topic. I feed mine chicken crumble. Game bird feed isn’t readily available here, and it costs substantially more.

I'm from the UK and I give them heygates micro layers pellets in one feeder. I also blend up some pellets with wild bird seed and peanuts in another feeder. Oh and they absolutely go crazy for live mealworms! Keep up the good work Chris.

In Romania 🇷🇴 the most popular food recipe for quail (7 weeks +) is: - ground corn 41% - ground soybean meal 31% - ground wheat 15% - calcium 7.5% - macropremix 2.5% - sunflower oil 1.5%

in my area, the gamebird startena ( purina) is 26.99 for a 40 or 50 pound bag, its the only brand available around here. I buy a bag of that and feed it to my hatchlings until they leave the brooder, then i switch them to purina meatbird, 19.99 a 40 pound bag. i grow mealworms for treats and extra protein.

Nice, fortunately our local supply has Purina 30% protein starter which we feed all the way till laying or processing. For the layers we mix 50/50, 30% starter and regular chicken layer 16%, averages out the protein and calcium well.

I did think about doing the mix of 30% starter and 16% chicken feed 50/50 once they start laying too. I know it’s been some time. Has anything changed on diet?

I'm going to switch over to layer once they get past a certain point. Here in so. Indiana I'm paying almost 20 a bag 😬.

Have you ever had a female just Never lay eggs? I have 1 female who is 10 weeks old & has never laid an egg. I have 1 that lays 2 every day & the other 4 lay 1 egg every day for the past 3 weeks.. They are all 6 the exact same age.

How often do you have egg bound deaths? I find the eggs are too big with that high protein level.

Can the feed mill make a quail-friendly feed without soybean meal? I have a severe soy allergy, so I have to feed my chickens soy-free feed, because the soy comes right through in the eggs. Any advice for the quail? Also, do you have any videos about the characteristics of quail meat? Is there dark and light, etc.

Quail are dark meat My friend orders soy free feed from Azure Standard but I think it's pricey.

@@kelliwiemers6445 Thanks for the help! Dark like squab? Yeah, I thought maybe I could grind my own until I saw the label. Looked to be a difficult proposition.

@@chasmofsar2691 I've never eaten squab. But I've looked into growing them. We had tumbler pigeons when I was a kid but we didn't eat them. I didn't even know people did until I was grown. Just not something my family ever did. But as I understand it you eat squab at 4 weeks. Quail are eaten usually around 6-8 weeks.

@@kelliwiemers6445 We used to shoot pigeons on local farms and cook the breasts. The meat was very very dark. It's the only small bird I recall eating. Fun to hear about other people's experiences. Thanks again!

It is ok to use that as supplement for their feed. I wouldn't rely on that as their only feed source though. It doesn't really have everything that quail need.

Kruse's Perfection gane bird feed is perfect for starting day old chicks on. It's powdery. I switch to game bird crumbles as soon as they're big enough to eat it. About 2-3 weeks. It works. That's what I do. Later switch to 22% meat bird crumbles....it's cheaper.
