CHILD'S PLAY 2 (1990) 4K UHD REVIEW | The Perfect Slasher Sequel In Glorious 4K!

Just finished watching Child's Play 2 and I think this one tops the Original. I love that we get More Chucky in this one. I forgot how Great the Kills were and the Doll factory sequence looked Awesome in 4K. Poor Chucky went thru hell in the factory. I loved that the Film grain was basically gone on this one and the 7.1 Audio track sounded great because I don't have an Atmos setup. Now I cannot wait for my Favorite one being Childs Play 3

I got the set early as well through the Shout Factory preorder. I will say they did a great job overall. My only gripe is that the additional scenes from the TV version are simply rips from what's up on RU-vid already. They are not remastered and still have the Sci-Fi and USA Network logos in the bottom right hand corner. They are also cobbled together in one running feature so it's a bit jarring. Unfortunately, the Child's Play 3 release has the same issue. I was REALLY hoping the scenes cut from the theatrical version would be restored (like the rest of the film has been) here and actually put into an extended cut of the film. At 84 minutes, Child's Play 2 is the shortest of the series and I never understood why the scenes put into the broadcast version were cut in post-production. Even after restoring those scenes, this movie only runs like 90 minutes. With all the said, I appreciate the job Shout Factory did. Since this is likely the only new special release of Child's Play 2 and 3 we will see, it's definitely worth the upgrade. I just wish that Shout Factory had been able to locate the master footage of the alternate and extended scenes.

Yes this is the review I was waiting for! As much of a fan as I am for the original Child’s Play, the sequel completely shattered all my expectations by delivering a wildly amped-up sequel! Everything from the promotional material (i.e. Theatrical poster and trailers) to the lean and mean film (running at just 84 minutes) to the characters to the gore to the new and improved Chucky to the musical score to the wild finale! This sequel took everything that worked from the original Child’s Play and injected it with some severely dangerous steroids to create a sequel that outshines it’s predecessor in every way. Seriously Childs Play 2 is a nasty entry with Chucky on his game. The opening and finale of this film are done with such epic Hollywood style and act as perfect bookends to the story between them. What’s really cool about this film is the filmmakers really paid attention to the art direction and went against the traditional horror grain by making a very bright and colorful film. The Toy Factory, Simpson home and Classroom are full of vivid color which really ties-into the story of a killer doll. This unique direction has not been duplicated since this film and it just dazzles. I swear they used a box of Crayons when completing the storyboarding for this beauty as color is everywhere. The Toy Factory finale has machines and conveyor belts everywhere but what’s cool is they’re all different primary colors with some striped machines too (pay attention to the blue and green striped machine in a certain “eye-popping” kill scene and you’ll know what I mean). The creators of this film clearly cared about the villain and content of this film and threw out all cliches of the usual dark, stormy and cool settings. I absolutely love this film for all the above as it truly was the spotlight that put Chucky on the map! I was 15 when this came out and I again missed seeing it in the theatre! As soon as I saw the poster artwork in my local newspaper in November of 1990, I tried desperately to get a copy of the CP2 poster. Again the poster artwork for this film is so bloody original and colorful it instantly became one of my favorite artwork! So much so that I made a replica of it in my Grade 10 art class (this allowed me to draw it while in school of course and my art teacher was cool with it). Back then there was no internet so grabbing merchandise like posters was no easy feat. I again had to wait until CP2 came to home video on April 11, 1991 before I saw it. Once I saw it, WOW! Oh and then I tried to buy it on VHS but back then most videos weren’t priced to sell so it would have cost me $89.95 which 15 years old in 1991 was a NO-NO! I did however join Columbia House in order to get this film on video before it was officially priced to sell… Oh and dare I mention the unbelievable Home Video standee they released?!?! This thing was an absolute masterpiece! I also managed to get my hands on one of these too and to this day it’s still mint in box (I can’t bring myself to set it up). Child’s Play 2 was also the first film where I discovered that critical reviews were a joke. I remember watching Siskel and Ebert discuss this film and after seeing it, I realized these two guys were not horror fans and they actually referred it to porn. Seriously they made this film sound like it was another Cannibal Holocaust. From then on I stopped watching critic reviews as I understood these guys didn’t like horror films and likely allowed their personal beliefs (not saying religious) dictate what good filmmaking is… Another great review and I insist that everyone pick-up the 4K issue of Child’s Play 2! I’m in Canada so I’m still waiting for my package to arrive!

Just subbed even though I've been watching your channel semi-regular for over a year at least. Kudos to you growing the channel *hopefully* especially w/ Jeff moving right now. SO many amazing 4K films coming in the next few months so need to get the reviews when & where I can. Thank you for keeping the flame alive for physical media lovers & collectors. As a fellow Child's Play fan (SEASON 2 IS NEARING!), dig your enthusiasm for the franchise & I couldn't agree, never gets enough love from my fellow horror fanatics!

Second one was always my favorite also. I have a DVD bootleg copy of Directions cuts of 2 & 3. The qualities so so but they both have a ton of extra scenes in them.

if I’m not mistaken universal did both the 4K scans for childs play 2&3 while MGm did the 4K scan for childs play. I know that universal did the 4K scan for American werewolf while mgm did the 4K scan for Robocop that arrow released. Universal does excellent 4K scans. The northman looked like equally breathtaking! Really some stellar stuff on 4K from universal.

Great review buddy. Part 2 is definitely one of the best horror sequels. Want to compliment you, your enthusiasm in the review is excellent and should make anyone not familiar with this movie want to check it out. Oh on a side note, my brother and I went to a horror convention in 2011 and my brother wanted to go outside to smoke a cigarette. While outside, up walks Alex Vincent asking my brother for a light. Really cool guy and said he really liked meeting all the fans at the conventions.

Why'd they have to put those silver banners at the top of the slipcovers? They eventually dropped that from the Blu-rays, which I thought might have indicated that they realized how much better they were without them, but then they regress back to it with the 4Ks.

Love this movie and the entire franchise might be the most consistent horror franchise with only having 1 bad movie(seed) imo.

Anyone notice the smudges/mold inside the cases? I had this issue and I've heard others say the same

Child’s Play 2 is a perfect sequel in my opinion, can’t wait to pick up the 4K’s that just released.

They would release these in 4k after I got the blu ray collection with the hologram on the front.

Like the first Child's Play movie, I am still agonising over whether to upgrade to this 4K. If the transfer and special features are better than the blu ray, then I might be tempted to punish my wallet!

Best Buy has the steelbook for the first one with the original artwork, which is why scream factory didn’t.

I think this film has a disturbing effect on some kids who unfortunately saw it. It got held up as an example of video nasty stuff . Pretty nasty 🤮. It got associated with the murder of a child back in the 90s in the uk .

Anyone who is watching a ek review is for the 4k transfer and about the sound. You go on and on talking about the film itself. Very poor review.

Shout Factory is so lazy with their special features. It's literally a commentary and a bunch of interviews. Where the hell are the "Making Of" documentaries? Where are documentaries based on the movie in general anymore? Shout is super lazy and cheap. Child's Play 2 deserves better special features.

This and Child’s Play 3 are my favorites in the franchise. Great review!
