Maya Kowalski details her treatment by social worker, Cathi Bedy, in the hospital, including being held down and photographed partially naked.
The $200 million lawsuit against Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital was featured in the Netflix documentary ‘Take Care of Maya’. In 2016, at just 10 years old, Maya Kowalski was admitted to Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital for severe pain and was removed from the custody of her parents after staff accused them of "medical abuse." Her mother, Beata Kowalski, hung herself in her garage on Jan. 7, 2016 after going months without seeing her due to the medical abuse allegations, according to the family's attorney, Greg Anderson.

I’m a retired teacher and I’ve seen how hard institutions fight to maintain “their image” regardless of what was right….regardless of what it did to children and families…. They don’t understand it would be better to just be honest when mistakes were made…our country has just made such a feeling of distrust with certain institutions….imho I believe they would spend much less on lawyers and lawsuits…most people just wanted the situation corrected…. Employees wouldn’t feel as though they could do what they want … they know it’s all “going to be covered up without paying any personal penalty “…… I’m just sick about this and others who didn’t or couldn’t litigate

It's an emotionally wrought case. Fact is she's not being held down in the photo, she's holding the hands of the nurse in the photo not the other way around, she normally has very short shorts on because of the medical condition, and concrete before/after photos would normally be very important evidence if real family abuse was going on. I think it's great she won the civil case because the hospital's gross incompetence needed to be corrected but expecting the hospital to get parental permission to take photos that would prove abuse by the parents, if that were really going on, is just not going to work obviously.

@Rose-pl5jj The crimes are abuse of power, lying and falsifying documents, mental anguish, psychological trauma, and depending on what training the nurse employeed with the hospital and the social worker employed by the state there could be physical and sexual abuse. I work in health care and no matter the age people have rights. Both the hospital staff AND the social worker SHOULD'VE applied a trauma informed care approach and had some damn bedside manner ESPECIALLY if they were assuming that this girl was being abused by her parents. This CHILD lost her mother due to the mental anguish these allegations caused. This CHILD likely now has PTSD and significant distrust for authority figures within health care and other government figures.. And that being said yes if the facility given the situation had to document photos before and after given the situation yes that is understandable. I personally/ professionally had that situation with a few people, BUT there is absolutely a right and wrong way to handle such a situation. And what they did to this child and entire family was totally WRONG.

the only time I had to as a minor, was in a psychiatric facility. I didn’t need to be naked I don’t believe ? but was only in undergarments. that was so they could take photos of all the self harm injuries and scarring I had.

@@jeremyweems4916 they did win. The trial. I'm not suggesting that will ever take away the pain of losing their mother, didn't think I had to clarify that either... But they said themselves that a.) doing the trial would be a sense of closure, that they could move on and finally grieve and heal and b.) it would be awful knowing they lost (of they lost the trial). So they themselves said it was very important to have the trial and win. And no it's a civil case so no one is going to jail. But 200 million dollars isn't chump change even for the hospital. They can't afford to keep losing that kind of money, although it's possible the amount will be reduced. It's so typical of the internet to argue points no one has even said. 🤷‍♀️

The whole picture taking of this child without parental permission or at least dcf approval is just disturbing. The fact she had to disrobe in front of this Cathi Bedi character is creepy and bizarre. Appears to me this social worker had at the least a strange attachment to Maya. Nor only should her license be revoked but she should not be allowed children.

Watched the documentary on Netflix last night, and this story is heartbreaking. Everyone who had a hand in this should be held accountable. How this family was treated was abhorrent. An innocent mother was driven to suicide. Someone has to answer for that.

This happens a lot. I've heard of kids being forced to strip naked and be photographed by social workers in child abuse cases. Even if they don't use threats, kids who are taught to obey the adults aren't going to know how to say no.

@@stacyhunt4783 But that's how you ensure that it is a fair trial. You have to have evidence. And just because someone says something happened doesn't mean it did or didn't. This judge has been on the verge of declaring a mistrial because of Maya's lawyers ' screw ups. The judge is trying to avoid the case being reversed on appeal. Can you imagine if Maya wins and then the hospital wins an appeal based on the judge letting in stuff he shouldn't have and the verdict gets tossed and they get a new trial???A new trial?? I don't think Maya could go through another trial .

I think they will. Every comment is in total support of Maya. This breaks my heart. The Netflix series "Take Care of Maya" was a horrifying documentary to watch but was a Godsend to bringing more attention to this case. Cathy Bedy should be criminally charged ASAP!

I've been checking out this case. It's mind boggling how much shit these people put this poor girl through. They basically killed her mother putting her through hell. Amazing story. The medical system is some kind of money vampire that's not interested in making people healthy.

I hope those in charge will look more closely at the social worker and cohort considering that the social worker was investigating even before she was put on the case and she certainly had no legal rights to do so and she has a bad habit of usually saying guilty and take the kids away. Even though some of her cases have proven that she was wrong. I get it isn't easy to know the right path but if you are going to be looking for children who need help you have to try to be fair and Considering she only presented one side to the judge which said guilty when the other side that she didn't record said innocent.

It is done is cases of visitation to make sure the child returns with no injuries. But in this case, they were going to court so I do not think they had any reason to do this to her.

I just watched the documentary. I can’t wait to see the outcome of this trial. Prayers for this family I hope they win. CPS system is so flawed. Where were they when Gabriel Hernandez was falling through the cracks of the system? That was the child that needed an advocate for abuse, but they took this poor child away from a nurse who knew how the system works.

I just watched this documentary on Netflix. It really impacted me emotionally, especially related to Beata taking her own life bc the hospital kidnapped her daughter. What in the world would this lady want with nude photos of this poor girl. It's so despicable. I'm very happy that the Kowalski family won in court, but it can never replace what they lost in all of this. ❤🙏

This is a live trial so all this is happening right now. We have to wait until the end of trial to see what happens. This girl went back to her home and is apparently doing much better since this experience. Of course All this mentally scarred her for life.

She was forced to stay in a hospital for 3 months and be separated from her family because her mother was accused of abuse. And the end her mother killed herself. This trial is about the family feeling the hospital was at fault. The trial is still ongoing, unless they reached a verdict over the last few days

To prove that when she left the hospital she was in one state and if she looked different by the time she was in court and if she was bruised she’d have done it to herself…ie self harmed.
