Just based on the the comments and other countdowns I've listened to, AYDY? is their most divisive album. I love it, I think it's literally perfect, but other people hate it, I think, because it signaled a change in sound and that they were going to put out another Hatebreeder.
Forget the albums, It’s all about Alexi playing and singing ‘Hate Me’ in Finnish acoustically on the street before being bundled into the back of a police van and taken away. But no, HCDR all the way 🖤

People shit on Bloodrunk, but it has my favorite COB song in it. Banned from Heaven. Banned from heaven has such a good verse riff. Hellhounds ROCKS too. Same with the title track, Tie my Rope, etc. it’s my favorite album of theirs
I'm a metalhead. I've been a metalhead for 12 years. I've been listening to Children of bodom for 11 years. I'm so saddened by Alexi Laiho's passing. He was definitely one of my favorite guitarists in metal besides Dean Lamb of Archspire and tons of others. The first time I heard Children of bodom was the songs, Blooddrunk, Are You Dead Yet?, Needled 24/7, Sixpounder and much more. My favorite Children of bodom albums: Are you dead yet? Halo Of Blood Hexed Something Wild Follow The Reaper I Worship Chaos Hatebreeder In this order. I love the other albums as well. 🤘🏽Great video.

I know, HCDR is so good and sometimes I wish I put it at no.2!! The top 3 albums are all as good as each other really! Just depends how I'm feeling as to which one is my favourite!

Hatecrew is my favorite album, but the solo(s) on Kissing the Shadows was never dethroned as my favorite of theirs. I need to do a re-listen from Blooddrunk through Hexed. Once they released Relentless, I really only gave every album from them a listen or 2 and that was it. Are You Dead Yet (got into COB just after Hatecrew) grew on me over the years so maybe some of their later ones will do the same.
I thought Hexed was a good redemption for any mis-steps in the chaos that was COB's career. Some real cool sonic moments. Cool band. Interesting perspectives. Thanks for the video!
Relentless was the first Bodom album I ever heard, so it holds a special place in my heart. Halo of Blood is probably my favourite, although I have to say that I don't think Children of Bodom ever released a bad album.
I’ve seen some other rankings that were “questionable” to say the least, so I came in expecting more of the same. Happy to say that I was wrong. I can see people switching some albums around, but as a whole, this is a very solid ranking. Well done. After all these years I’m still finding cool little things in their songs, which is something I can’t say about most bands. Rest In Peace to the Wild Child.

Theres so much awesomeness packed into relatively short albums to discover, and I still notice subtle things I hadn't before too! The new Bodom After Midnight sounds awesome too. Glad we got one more release with Alexi on, but sad to hear the potential this project had and that we wont get more. RIP Alexi indeed
People get confused with bloodrunk, they were not conforming to any American thrash sound it's the same grass roots as are you dead yet, and hatecrew. Alexi and company have always had a heavy thrash influence going back to dead night warrior. Bloodrunk is one of their absolute best and Alexi's vocals really became the best they had ever been. Jaska on drums, maybe his best work.
Bodom fans always ignore vocals lyrics and rythm despite the fact that those are some of the best parts of their songs. Even their most simplistic song (prayer for the afflicted) is absolutely killer because what it lacks in melody it makes up for in lyric and emotion
Giving a top three I'd go with: Blooddrunk Something Wild Hatebreeder Blooddrunk really put me on to become a fan of this band in 2008. I had heard a small handful of tracks before like Are You Dead Yet? In Your Face and Angels Don't Kill, but they didn't grab me like the tracks on Blooddrunk did. I was blown away by the power from the title track, and Alexi's guitar creativity on Banned from Heaven. Plus that chant "BANNED FROM! HEAVEN!" Just the power man.. love it love it love it. The other two albums? For the speed, whirling constant tempo changes, again, mind-blowing. I think the guitar solo at the end of the title track "Hatebreeder" is legendary in itself
Blood Drunk is a great album. Everyone just didn't like it, cause they were fans prior. And this disappointed them, because they changed their sound. But this is stupid. Because Are you Dead yet, was just as a drastic change, from the albums before it.
I really liked your reasoning for your list, awesome video! As for my personal list, I really cannot put all the albums in an order that would be the "definite" order for me, it changes on a day to day basis based on the way I am feeling and especially the 2nd and 3rd place swap places all the time. But if I had to put them in order right now, this is what it would be. 10. Something Wild Don't get me wrong, most of the songs, are very very good and the guitar work is absolutely incredible. Yeah the production is what it is but considering the fact how young the guys were back then it's incredible. The only reason for placing it last is that this is that one album that I basically never DIRECTLY listen to due to it just being so damn raw. If I want to hear a song from this album, I'll look for a live video from around 1999-2007 9. Relentless Reckless Forever As many have pointed out, this album is just dull and the writing isn't really impressive compared to the other production of this band. To me the album kind of sounds like the band doesn't know where to go. I don't know what they thought while producing this album but it just doesn't sound too good imo. There are some very good songs that I really like tho, for example Shovel Knockout and the album name track. 8. I Worship Chaos Imo the production is way better for this album, but still the songs are just too forgettable apart from some absolutely great songs. Widdershins, Morrigan, I hurt, All For Nothing, Hold Your Tongue, My Bodom are the highlights for me. Also for whatever reason the guitar tone of this album is absolutely bone crushing to me. I don't know what it is about it but I really like it. Especially the Morrigan intro. 7. Blooddrunk Blooddrunk is underrated imo. It really isn't as bad as people at least used to think, I don't know if as many people hate it anymore. There were so many great choruses on this album that I really love. For example Done With Everything, Die For Nothing, Tie My Rope, Hellhounds On My Trail and more. I just really fucking liked the choruses on this album. Yeah the direction the band went with this album is too American but it's still good. 6. Halo Of Blood This was such a nice throwback in a way to the old days of Bodom. Still really heavy sounding but the old Bodom is there. Just more matured in a way. I really liked Damaged Beyond Repair, Halo Of Blood, Bodom Blue Moon, All Twisted, Transference and Waste Of Skin. And I have to add, that Sleeping In My Car cover is fucking great haha. 5. Are You Dead Yet? Are You Dead Yet? is the song that introduced me to Bodom and at the same time to screaming vocals and harsher metal. I saw the EMGTV video of Alexi Laiho playing through Are You Dead Yet and I was absolutely in love with the song. Now at the time of watching that video I didn't know that the vocals that were absent on that video were screaming vocals and I was so disappointed when I found out that the vocals are screamed as I really didn't like this vocal style at the time. It grew on me though and now I wish I could scream like Alexi haha. Somewhat funny thing is that I am Finnish and I remember the only reason for me clicking on that video being that I saw a Finnish name and an awesome looking guitar. I am so fucking glad I clicked on that video, it opened up a completely new world of metal to me and I found my idol for guitar playing. I like all of the songs on the album. 4. Hexed This video summed it up perfectly. I just want to say that the Kuckleduster remake was absolutely insane and Alexis vocals during the chorus always give me the goosebumps. Some of my favorites were Knuckleduster (duh), Platitudes And Barren Words, Under Grass And Clover and Hexed. 3. Hatebreeder Now this is the one I am gonna get flamed for if anyone sees this comment haha. But to me right now Hatebreeder is third. It really is one of metals greatest albums imo there is no denying that. Downfall has one of the most iconic riffs, the neo classical aspects of this albums are incredible, for both guitar and keyboards. To me right now the two remaining albums are just better. I don't think better is the right word. Let's just say that I listen to the two other one's more. 2. Hate Crew Deathroll This is the definition of Bodom. Like said in the video, this album is in between all the neo classical stuff and their heavier stuff. It's just perfect. The production is better than their any of the previous albums and Alexi's vocals are a lot better. There really are no skippable songs here. At least not to me. 1. Follow The Reaper It's my favourite album of all time. The writing on this album is just absolutely insane, It's a complete beatdown through the whole album, just melodies after melodies after melodies. It's a fucking bible of metal melodies. And my god the guitar tone is just something. The part of the song Follow The Reaper where it's just the guitars and occasional drums, make the hairs of my body rise up every, single, time. Yet again, not a single skippable song. I am really sad that Alexi's body gave up, all though it is not a surprise, he gave his body a beating through his whole life. The Bodom After Midnight EP was just too good and it really makes me and for sure many others think of what could've been. Rest in peace, guitar god. Your melodies will live forever.
Really liked your list, here's mine with commentary! 10 - I Worship Chaos: I really agree on you on this album, widdershins is such a good song but its forgettable as an album appart from a few good rifts! 9 - Halo Of Blood: Bodom blue moon is one of my favorites songs, but too many songs on this album does not stick for me. 8 - Something wild: It feels all over the place, even Alexi said it was a bunch of random stuff put together and you can feel it. Red lights in my eyes 1 and 2 are forgettable. Touch like angel of death has good parts but its too long for its content. In the shadows ending is superb! 7 - Blooddrunk: I felt like you about blooddrunk, but when you revisit it, so many songs are better than I though! One day you will cry is so underestimated! I always felt it would have been a good show opener with revealing each musician one after the other as the intrument are introducted in the song. And its fast! Hellhouds on my trail starts you on a sprint from the get go! 6 - Hexed: It was refreshing and so diverse when they release this album, a lot is going on in this one and for the best! hexed is a very good song. 5 - Follow the reaper: Hate me, follow the reaper and bodom after midnight are my favorites on this one! But the rest while good doesnt ends up in my playlists 4 - Relentless Reckless Forever: it grew on me so much with time. I think it has one of the best COB rift in miss pussyfoot at the 2:20 mark. Heavy catchy fast followed by a good solo battle. Shovel and not my funeral are bangers for sure as well. Ugly solo is 3 - Are You Dead Yet: We're not gonna fall is a song often skipped in the greatness of AYDY in my opinion. If you wanna headbang, this is the album for it! Trash lost and strungout is so heavy and fast, sad i could never hear it live. 2 - Hatebreeder: I started playing guitar by learning bed of razors ahaha. the struggle but i'm happy i can play 90% of 4 songs on this album. The album as a whole is so great, fast, catchy and melodic. Special mention to Black widow, underused song ! 1 - Hatecrew Deathroll: HCDR live is unforgettable, the feeling of screaming your lungs out, bouncing around with horns in the airs while everyone sings the chorus with Alexi is such a core memory for me. Dont forget about the 40ish seconds solo! You're better off dead is so good too. Bodom beach terror is quite the GOAT as well!
Like the format with a bit of background of what was going in the band (new members etc) - nice one!! Really appreciate your pointing out the severe lack of keyboard too. All metal needs more keyboards \.fm./ I remember pirating (Limewire, naughty! Much like your dad I imagine...f) CoB back in the late 2000s and downloading random tracks - definitely all of "Something Wild" and as a result "Red Light In My Eyes 1+2" & Lake Bodom are forever fondly stamped into my memory. But yeah, full album is lacking in comparison to other CoB albums. Love that you have to cut when you're getting excited too 😂 Going to have to revisit "Halo of Blood" too as I dismissed it initially. Any chance of ranking Agalloch albums next? 😉
Halo of Blood is pretty awesome! Definitely an underrated album! Agalloch is a good idea, but need to listen through them all properly to figure out how I'd rate them. I know what my no.1 is for them though XD
Yes! I just listened to it the other day for the first time in so many years because I completely forgot about it. I didn’t really like it before. But when I heard it the other day I was like damn, this is actually really fucking good.
Unpopular opinion. Blood Drunk is actually a PHENOMENAL album! And has some of his best guitar work. Done with Everything Die for Nothing has an AMAZING SOLO! Smile Pretty for the Devil, and Tie my Rope, have some of his catchiest hooks. Its just, this was a HUGE step away, from what everyone was expecting. From a new Bodom album. ( At the time ) So everyone was disappointed. But if you can listen to the album without that bias, it really is some of their best work.
Nice and interesting list there. I do disagree on some points, but I've also had some similar experiences. Anyway here's my list (Note there is no album I genuinely dislike) 10. Blooddrunk: Same as you I absolutely hated it when it came out. Going back I agree that it's not as bad as we thought, but except for a few standout tracks (Blooddrunk, Tie my Rope, Banned from Heaven), there is just not much to it. 9. I Worship Chaos: Objectively possibly better than my number 8, however I just constantly struggle to remember any song off it. I guess it's consistenly mediocre maybe. 8. Relentless Reckless Forever: Surely not their greates effort, but I think a solid and consistent album with great standout tracks such as Shovel Knockout, Not my Funeral or Ugly. What falls really short here is the production, damn it sounds awful. 7.Hexed: Admittedly, I had never listened to it till recently, because I had lost some interest throughout the years and didn't like the first single. That being said. I kindly really liked this record, so it's definitely looking upwards and might climb next time I listen to it. 6. Halo of Blood: Now this one Is criminally underated, including by me. You're absolutely right saying that it's tough to get into. Every time I listen to it I absolutely love it, thinking about it I struggle to grasp it. However, especially the title track is genuinely amazing and unique to this band. 5. Are you Dead Yet?: Definitely a nostalgic pick, btu 12 year old me would die for this record. A lot of Great stuff on here, though the second have of the record falls short a little. A disagree with you on Punch me I bleed, as it's actually one of my favourite songs on this record next to Living Dead Beat, the title track, In your face and Trashed 4. Something Wild: Yes it's raw, yes the vocals have room for improvement, but let's keep in mind that those guys were like 17-18 years old when they made that thing. And that is absolutely amazing. Plus Lake Bodom and In the Shadows are some of my all time favs 3. Hate Crew Deathroll: This is their transition record and it's pretty much flawless. Their old sound still comes through on tracks like Angels don't kill or Triple Corpse, I love their thrashy stuff like Sixpounder. 2. Hatebreeder: This is a perfect CoB record, it perfectly grasps the vibe that makes this band so unique. Songs lie Warheart, Silent Night, Bed of Razors, Downfall are just all time classics 1. Follow the Reaper: Here I 100% agree with you. Hatebreeder might be their best, but Follow the Reaper is my favourite. Kissing the Shadows is my absolute all time favourite song of theirs and a perfect way to close an album with that stunning solo. Other standouts include Everytime I Die, Children of Decadence. Overall the sound of that record in combination with that iconic album cover is just the definition of CoB to me
Good video man, to each it's own, but listening to the albums on 2021, Are you dead yet? comes to me as one of their weakest efforts, the singles and if you want peace...prepare for war are awesome songs but the rest of the album feels a bit all over the place to me, not trying to be a dick or anything but many of the keyboard parts on AYDY sound like something you would hear on anime theme songs or power rangers or something like that. Don't get me wrong, I loved that album when it first came out, but listening to it now, most of it (except for the songs I mentioned before) sounds like they were still figuring out how to bring heavier elements into their music, I used to think blooddrunk was "more of the same" when it first came out but listening to it now I think it's more focused and sounds more cohesive than AYDY. And the song blooddrunk fucking rips I think it's the perfect balance between their more modern sound and their oldschool blackmetal influences, but anyways, I feel kind of sad of re-discovering cob's music though alexi's passing though. I admit, there a heavier serving of nostalgia for Are You Dead Yet? that is clouding my judgement! But I cant help how I feel about the album. I went back to the album a while ago, and back then, I felt the same as you about it. But this time round, I have become very fond of the album probably more on a personal level. I'll agree it's not musically their best. Glad you enjoyed the video! Discussions like this are exactly what I hoped for when making the video :)

I heard Hatebreeder alot and its perhaps too melodic for me.. i feel it takes away abit the trash and black metal side of it..that part i dont like. In other words i like Bodom songs that are more depressed~feeling oriented, not to show how a good guitarplayer he is.. cuz i know his a guitar master. Are you dead yet album is the most unbalanced album..means there are awesome ones but also the weakest song as Bastards of bodom. Anyhow rip Allu.. you were the goat in metal! Btw i gonna hear today all albums with an open mind.. so might come back if the order has changed!

I mostly agree with you on almost all points there! The only exception being I rate Halo of Blood and not I Worship Chaos. But none of their albums are bad. My title is a little misleading!
I'm a little late to the party, but here is my ranking: 1. HCDR 2. HEXED 3. FTR 4. BD 5. AYDY 6. HB 7. RRF 8. IWC 9. SW 10. HoB To add a few words: The only albums I barely listen to are Halo of Blood and Something Wild. Everything else is good or great. The problems with Halo for me is the sound. It sounds so boring, generic (almost computer edited, especially the vocals. Compare the vocals on Hexed for example with Halo. On Hexed they sound super naturally and raw but on Halo they sound kind of forced) That said the songs themselves aren't even bad, but it doesn't help if I can't enjoy listening to them because of the sound. Something Wild as you said is that first really raw album and it didn't age that well production wise. The reason why I ranked Hexed so high is because in my opinion it has great songs and the second best sound / production after HCDR. Absolutely amazing final album and a true return to form. Blooddrunk and RRF are generally underrated Imho. I understand why people might not like them but I really enjoy them. Not my Funeral, Hellhounds, Blooddrunk, Tie my Rope are some of the best Bodom songs Imho
You have a pretty unique preference for CoB albums! Not come across many people that would rank them like you. Very interesting! I guess I primarily listen to guitar melodies when listening to metal, whereas it seems your focus is more towards vocals. I hadn't even noticed the difference in vocals on Hexed and HoB. I will have to listen again! Production is something I've never really picked up on, but as I'm doing these rankings, I am starting to get an ear for it. Take my Sonata Arctica ranking for example. @@thegothicviking1388 well I definitely also pay more attention to the guitars, but the vocals need to kind of fit in for me, if you know what I mean. And on Halo of Blood and partially also IWC the vocals of Alexi don't have this "wild, raw" touch to them for me. Luckily Hexed delivered again. Regarding the production thing: I'm not a musician, so I don't claim to have a professional opinion on this. I'm not even sure, if production is the correct word for what I mean. Maybe mixing would be the correct word? I don't know. The overall sound world on Halo of Blood simply doesn't work for me. After all, music is a very personal thing and everyone prefers different things. I really wish I could enjoy Halo of Blood as much as most people seem to do.
COB lost their ways after relentless reckless. Stopped listening to any of their new stuff after that. But platitudes and barren words was a decent song.

Because Something Wild is a bunch of talented kids who haven't really figured out how to write songs yet. AYDY? combines perfect writing with insane energy and creativity. Nearly every song on that album is a Bodom classic.

The 'songs with the word "Bodom" in it' thing is just an observation. The neo-classical elements in their music is what drew me to them in the first place on Hatebreeder and Follow the Reaper. So I feel RRF is just missing the very thing that I liked them for. There are a couple of decent songs and no one is saying you can't enjoy the album. If you like it, that's great!
Halo of Blood is the absolute worst album IMO. It's just so boring and is the least melodic. Alexi's vocals are terrible, and some songs don't even have real solos. Something Wild is is an amazing album, and grew on me over the years. I agree some of it is all over the place, but what do you expect, Alexi was only 17 when he wrote it. In The Shadows is one of my favorite songs.
