In this video, I'll show you how to lay a children's book spread for Amazon KDP in Procreate on the iPad. (For a single page, see previous tutorial)
After you watch this tutorial, you can go through and create all your pages for your children's book. Stay tuned for the rest of the videos in this series, where we'll save the PDF and create the cover!
After you create all of your children's book pages & save as JPGs, you can combine those JPGs into a PDF file to upload to Amazon KDP. (Stay tuned for my tutorial on how to do that as well!)

Just caught this video. So far, seems THE BEST tutorial I’ve viewed so far. I’m going to check out your other videos, but I just bought an iPad Pro. I plan to LEARN IT ALL- the entire process- so I can make some children’s books for/with my now 4 year old in mind. I’ve been wanting to do this since I first started reading to him. Excited to see what other tutorials you have to help walk me through this entire process. He’s only 4 and wants to create his own books LOL so I thought I could use his ideas and drawings to inspire whatever I create.

Hello Heather! Thank you so much for your video. My partner and I have been working hard to figure out how to get our pages all the way to the edge (Bleed). We used Canva and Word I am wondering if you have any advice.

Hi Heather!! I'm so happy I stumbled across you!! Do you recommend a specific canvas size when working in procrate? I don't know how many pages are needed for my friend's book. I remember you saying in one of your videos to be careful not to enlarge the artwork too much because your artwork would appear blurry in procrate. Thank you again for all the info!!!

Hi! It would really depend on the final size that you want for your book. For example, if you're doing an 8x10 book then you would create your artwork at 300dpi, 8.125"x10.25" (always add .125" to the width and .25" to the height for bleed). Hope that helps! Thanks so much ☺️

Hi love, thanks for the information. Have you printed a book off of procreate measurements? Or just Photoshop? I have another way of doing the template but tried it your way to see if our measurements lined up and they did. But I have not printed yet off of procreate measurements. I want to be sure the prints actually do come out right.

Hi, I haven't actually printed from my procreate file but as long as they are the correct dimensions and DPI you should be good. You can open up the exported JPG in Photoshop or another photo editor and check the image size there, or another option would be to print it out on your desktop printer (without doing any "fit to page" etc, just actual size) and make sure the quality looks good. Hi! Yes the term "trim size" refers to the page size after it is trimmed. The page size "with bleed" means before it is trimmed, so it's bigger. So for example, page height with bleed may be 8.5", but trim size is 8.25" because they would trim off 1/8" off of either the top and bottom. Does that make sense?

Hi! Thank you for watching - so glad you like my videos!! Yes, the formula would basically be: width = 2xbleed + 2xpage width. For KDP, that would be 2 x .125 + 2 x 9 = 18.25 height = 2xbleed + page height. For KDP, that would be 2 x .125 + 9 = 9.25 However, if you are not using KDP, you'll need to find out the bleed size of the publisher you are using. May I ask which publisher you are using?

@@MariamPoppins Hi Mariam, are you able to ask the publisher what the bleed measurement is? It may be .125" like KDP, but it also may be different. Is this the part you are confused about? height = 2xbleed + page height. For KDP, that would be (2 x .125) + 9 = 9.25 This is for the height of the page, whether it is a single page or a spread, it will still be the same height. Just the height of the page, plus added bleed on top and bottom. Does that make sense?

@@HeatherCashArt I can ask 😃. In the video you said your book size was 8.25 x 8.25 on the right the size was 8.5 for a single page and I think it threw me off. So I did the formula for a 9 x 9 book and I wanted to do a double page spread so…my math looked like: 9+0.125 = 9.125 x 2 = 18.25 but I didn’t know the single page number - the height I’m assuming is 9.25 ..so my procreate canvas would be 18.25 x 9.25….and forgive me if I haven’t caught it. It’s been a rough week. Thank you for taking the time to break it down.

@@MariamPoppins oh ok, I think I know which part you are referencing. The 8.5 for a single page is the height, not width. A single page will have .125 top bleed + .125 bottom bleed, so .25 total bleed added to the height. For width, you only add the bleed one time, so .125. What you have calculated sounds correct!

Please tell me someone has told you... If you turn on assisted drawing, your line will snap to that spot on your drawing guide, so you will have straight lines with minimal effort. Just turn it off when you're done.

Hi Heather. I have an even pages of 42 that I created on a spread. Do I have to take it apart as a single page to upload to KDP? The cover page stays at a full spread too. If I upload at full spread on all, the extra blank page at the front wouldn't that be a single page? Thank you so much for all your videos.

Hi! Yes you do need to break your spreads up into single pages. And yes you're right, if you just upload a PDF with all your pages then you will have one by itself at the beginning and it will throw all the others off. So you will need to add a blank page (or title page, copyright page, just any page really) at the beginning so it can be that first page that's all by itself. Then the rest will match up properly. Heather, when you save a page as a jpeg, does that automatically “flatten” layers and “embed fonts”? I’m unclear what KDP means by those terms.

Yes! A jpg by nature is flattened and everything is pixels so no embedded fonts :) Sometimes a PDF will have layers and embedded fonts, which is why I like to save as a jpg so I know everything is flattened (but of course keep a copy of the layered file with fonts in case you want to edit later). Then later you can combine your flattened jpg's into a PDF. Hope that makes sense!

Anyone else notice she wears a long sleeve sweater to rest her wrist when carefully drawing the guides? This is a good idea to avoid smudging. I am brand new to Procreate for writing and illustrating children’s books. The palm support options in my regular iPad settings work OK but also make other touch screen functions not work. I’m not going to purchase a digital drawing glove, it’s one more accessory to deal with and another expense.

Hi! I was lazy and used RGB. But don't do as I do 😉 If you used RGB, then Ingram is converting it to CMYK for you. CMYK contains less colors than RGB, and when you convert, it usually will look duller. But at least if you convert it yourself (rather than leaving it up to Ingram), you'll have some control over it. You can modify the saturation in Photoshop and also use replace color to target certain areas. Check out my video on RGB vs CMYK for more details!

Hi! No, you have to have each page as a separate page in the PDF (so a spread would be 2 separate pages in the PDF).

OOPS! I misunderstood your question!! The size I gave you is the size for the cover. The size for a spread would be 8.625 + 8.625 = 17.25 wide, 8.75 high!

The second I save a pre-existing JPG onto the canvas, it loses quality. How? I made the original image in procreate. And it looks fine while I’m resizing it and Snapping it onto the canvas. But the second I click the arrow, it pixelates and is not usable. I have searched everywhere and no one can explain this issue.

It's probably because you are in Procreate 🙁 Any time I copy/paste, move, or size something in Procreate (even sizing DOWN) it loses quality and gets blurry. So it is probably better actually to use Procreate only for the creation of the art and then use a different software for the rest (splitting up the spread, etc). I think it's better to use either Photoshop or Canva. If you already have Photoshop and are experienced with it, then you can use that, but if not then I recommend Canva because it is easier to learn for beginners. I have tutorials for both! Another thing you can try is setting the transform option to "Nearest Neighbor" which should get better results. BUT, I do still think that Photoshop or Canva is better overall for laying out your children's book (I think Procreate is really great for drawing, but just not meant for graphic design) help.procreate.com/procreate/handbook/transform/transform-interpolate

why is everyone cutting their spread in half after they make it??? Does amazon KDP not do the facing pages spread?? if you upload your spread of 1 long drawing in 2 separate files, wont they cut bleed on all of the pages so in the end the illustration will not feel like its matching? I just cant find any proper explanation on the spread.

Hi! Amazon requires that each page be a separate page in the PDF, so you do need to split it up into two pages. No, Amazon does not trim off the inside edge. When you add extra for bleed, you're only adding it to the outside edges - so you add .125 to the top, bottom, and outside edge. So when you split up your spread, it WILL match up perfectly. You'll be able to see it in the previewer when you upload your book too, so that should give you some peace of mind. I hope that makes sense! Let me know if you have any more questions.
