Thank you for watching our ear wax removal video today. The ear wax extraction featured in todays video was carried out using endoscopic microsuction. This procedure uses a small camera called an endoscope to visualise inside the ear canal whilst a small suction tube is inserted to gently remove ear wax.

Ear wax plays a vital role in ear health. It helps to prevent ear infection and helps with ear cleaning by picking up any dirt or debris that accumulates in the ear canal. Normally this ear wax would fall out of the ear taking any dirt or debris with it.
How to remove ear wax?
Many people use q-tips/cotton buds for ear wax removal at home this is one of the worst things you can put into the ear as this can lead to an increased ear wax buildup or in extreme cases impacted ear wax. The best way to remove ear wax is to let your ears clean themselves and not to put anything smaller than your elbow in your ears!
How do I know if I have an earwax blockage?
If you experience a change in your hearing, discomfort in the ear or jaw or a feeling of fullness in the ear canal you may have an ear wax blockage. Our advice is to speak to your Doctor or local Audiologist who can take a look in your ears and assess whether ear cleaning is needed.

Please do not apologize for the rant. I was a pediatric nurse for years. The pediatrician I worked for was always gentle and kind to his patients. He did ear wax removals himself, and the kids were mostly very cooperative because of his demeanor. The world needs more health care givers like you!!!

I had a terrible Pediatrician. Experienced chronic ear pain for over a decade from age 3. Finally, at age 14, I saw another MD who was aghast at what she saw. Her first and only question was "what antibiotic was prescribed?" The answer? None. All that time I was given only hot oil drops. My Pediatrician insisted the pain did not exist. Hopefully, parents will read this. Listen to your children.

I had horrible pain as well and no antibiotics. I’m pretty sure my mom didn’t insist. She was horrible to doctors and didn’t advocate for for us, just blamed them when a miracle didn’t happen.

First Rule. Do No Harm. That includes psychological harm. I don’t blame you for being upset. This practitioner obviously did not care for pediatric patients. He probably doesn’t treat adult patients much better! Kudos to you! ❤

I had an ENT consultant as a kid who was an absolute monster, he was so rude and dismissive of everyone and was a bit of a bully to be honest. I have a friend who used to work with him and she said he was exactly the same with her and his other colleagues. Sometimes I think consultants forget that they're treating people and get swept up in their own stuff and god complexes.

So true! I worked for a cardiologist like that years ago, he was awful to his staff! He would butter up his patients and then talk rudely and make fun of them after they left. Was so glad when I got a job elsewhere

Anyone who has been a patient, or worked with the NHS, knows about these people - I have an impression (from limited experience in just one NHS Trust) that arrogant consultants are subject to better controls now than they were decades ago: I know of one in relatively recent years who was routinely rude to his patients, and to everyone else; it was sad, because he was a good doctor technically, and also he did soften appreciably if you stood up to him: but there you are in a backless gown, there is the consultant in his white coat, you're not feeling much like locking horns with the person who's supposed to be there to help you. In the end, this doctor was sacked - because he wouldn't or couldn't change his attitude and complaints were rolling in by the bucket-load. Back in the day, I've known of others who just went on and on, well past retirement age, patronizing, bullying, and insulting their patients. They're not all aware they're even doing it - maybe better training would help?

Was this in the Norfolk and Norwich hospital in the sixties and seventies? The ENT surgeon there at that time was brilliant at his job, but his (lack of) bedside manner was legendary.

I’ve met with quite a few consultants like this! I had a horrible consultant radiologist who did an ultrasound on my tum, said he saw bleeding but didn’t know what it was! Then glared at me as if were up to no good! Very brusque and rude. Turns out I had endometriosis which had migrated into my stomach area !

Been there. Many an MD are really a walking ego furnace disguised as a person. It's all about them. So much for do no harm. There are fine doctors available. They can be difficult to locate.

Yes just explaining the basics & letting a child hold/feel the tools removes a large percentage of any fear. Some people explain well to Adults more than the Little ones.

I have worked with disabled people for the past 14 years. It still amazes me how a medical "professional" can dismiss an issue. I have been thanked by their parents and doctors on how I advocate for them. This is what you did for this boy and I APPLAUD you!!!!!! Good job all around.

I work in the healthcare industry for over 14 years now and I don’t have the temperament for the kids 🤷🏻‍♀️ my passion is for the older folks , the dementia patients and so forth , some ppl aren’t pleasant enough, kids can definitely read the room and energy and if you aren’t compassionate enough they will not be able to relax, I’m glad this kid parents found you 👍🏼

As a small child I had a dentist as a child who was very rude and told me “shut up!” I had adhd and a nervous talker. I still remember that. After him, I had a gentle very kind dentist but he unfortunately retired early due to health reasons.

I was traumatized by a pediatric dentist- to the point where I ended up having to get a root canal in third grade when I could no longer ignore the pain. Even now, I still get nervous going to the dentist. So yeah, treating patients with kindness and gentleness is a huge deal.

Rhys, I love you. I applaud you and your dedication. I remember being in the hospital as a young teen, and hating being there. The nurses weren't very nice. Years later, my own child has a chronic condition, and she spent years in and out of the hospital. The attitude was so different from when I was a kid. You are just like the people we worked with for my child.

I used to work with little kids. Sometimes you have to sit down with them and work on whatever the problem. Some people just don't want to take the time and be patient with them. Especially special needs kids. They would call me to come deal with them. Most if not all are easy to deal with. If you have patience. I have had some typical kids who are impossible to deal with. Sorry I got sidetracked with talking about impatient people. This is why you and the wonderful Mr Taylor Green are so good with patients. You need to have patience even with the difficult ones. You have other good qualities, to many to list.😊❤

I've had problems with ear wax since I was a little girl. In fact, one of my earliest memories was my mom using a bulb and warm water to shoot in my ear to try and get wax blockage out - and me promptly fainting. I was sitting on the bathroom counter and she caught me as I went. Thank you for being so sensitive to your patients. It takes a hero to do what you do.

As someone with lifelong ear problems that started with a ruptured ear drum at just a few months old I really appreciate your compassion towards young patients. I've had tympanoplasties on both ears and a choleatoma removal in one. I actually loved the 'rant'. I have had ear issues since I was very young and one of my first wax removals was very rough (age 8). That makes a child never want to go back to an ear professional. Thankfully like this young man my second visit to a someone else was so completely different. The doctor was very calming and explained to me what it would be like before hand and talked to me while working and gave me breaks when necessary. At 61 yrs old I still have my ears cleaned out yearly but if that 2nd doctor hadn't been so kind where would I be now. So always 'rant' about things you feel strongly about. Maybe it will help another practitioner improve or help a parent to ask the right questions. Thank you for caring

Oh, so happy to hear that you were able to help this little guy with his ear wax. Practitioners that treat any patient like an inconvenience need to re-evaluate their professions and may need to either take a long break or get out and get a new non-people job. I worked in the medical field for 40+ years and saw many horrendous behavioral issues by practitioners. The ones that I dealt with got reprimanded and one got thrown out of our specialist fellowship program. Hugs, Rhys!

Medical trauma is real. Avoiding medical trauma, especially in children should be every practitioners goal. If you are causing your patients trauma, and upset to the point of tears, it is NEVER OK, and you should reevaluate your career choices. This is why we love you so much. You're kind and patient. You care about your people. It comes across in the videos. I watch several audiologists (I have a friend who just became an audiologist)... You're my favorite.

So much respect to you for your talk in the beginning! I've had slight trauma from bad experiences with medical practitioners as well and it's stuck with me. I've been watching your videos for awhile now and I would definitely trust you with my health

Thank u for being so good at what u do. I experienced this at 5yo from multiple ear infections to boot . Mean ear doc. I screamed. I haven't been back.😢 U guys r d best. 🇺🇸

I work in dental and have had many similar situations happen. I’m so glad there are people like you out there! Even when kiddos are “difficult” they never ever mean to be difficult, they are just scared!

Thank you for helping this little boy. Nothing worse for a child than getting scared. I was made terrified as a child by the dentist, now I'm 63 and I'm still traumatised. I don't get it, it's no not necessary. So thank you for helping the boy.
