In this video, I give an update on my Chilean Guavas (Ugni molinae). I have a few different varieties including Ka-Pow, Flambeau & Butterball. I also do a tasting of my first-ever Chilean Guava and give my honest review. Of course, the plant is still very young and container-grown so not at its full potential.

Here in Ireland, generally i find they are at there best early October when fully ripe. They are very sweet with a upfront strawberry flavour and pine aftertaste, overall when ripe they are delicious.

Thanks! That's good to know, I imagine they will be ready at a similar time here too then. I recently got a new variety of Chilean guava that was covered in fruits, so I'm hoping to be able to compare a few different types when they ripen up 🤞

I have a Chilean guava bush and they taste similar to strawberry and cream when ripe , the berries grow to the size of small cherries and have a nice fragrant smell when ripe

@@PeterEntwistle don’t know the variety but looks very similar to yours . Mine is 2 years old and has grown to almost a meter tall and one meter wide bush . It has lots of flowers and berries growing at the moment

@@paulodelgado7281 Nice! Is that in the UK? I think in my location I'd have to give them some winter protection on the coldest nights. Hopefully, the unusually cold spell we got last December here was a one-off.

@@PeterEntwistle yes it’s in the uk , I’m based in Silverstone, Northamptonshire. They are hardier than I thought , the pots froze up in my green house last winter but the Chilean guava bush didn’t get affected. It’s planted out in the garden , I will cover it with some fleece over winter. My pineapple guava bush has been outside for 6 years now and I never cover it over winter , it’s almost 2 meters tall and I had few blooms for the first time this year

@@paulodelgado7281 ah, nice! I was planning on planting one of my Chilean guavas. Yeah, pineapple guavas are very hardy, mine didn’t suffer any damage last winter.

I got Ka-Pow, it turns from red to slightly yellow on the sides when it's ripe.

I find them a bit small to have much flavour. I'm extremely suspicious of the old wives tale that they were Queen Victorias favourite fruit 😂😂 Hopefully next year I'll get some fruits again 🤞

Haha, yeah I'm a bit suspicious of that one too, it sounds like a marketing ploy to me lol 😂 I didn't know you didn't have any fruit set this year, hopefully you get some next year 🤞

@@lyonheart84 Oh, that will do it lol 😂 I knew that your in-ground Flambeau had died, didn't realise you lost your others 😢 I think my Flambeau might have flowered if it didn't get cold-damaged 🙄

Hi peter, youll see them plump up and change colour slightly... what ive found is the name varieties are pretty much rubbish in terms of taste...press the fruit and if they are hard dont eat, if they are soft to touch they are ready.

Thanks, Oliver. Yeah, I think the ones on the kapow were still firm. I had no idea what to expect from them but I think the Butterball variety hasn't got the best fruit anyway as it is mostly grown for its ornamental leaves. I'm not actually sure if the one I had was fully ripe, I think it might have started drying up before it was ready.

I bought a small one based on your video. Looking forward to it fruiting. Are they self fertile Peter ?

Hey, Gordon. Yes as far as I’m aware they are self-fertile. The kapow variety that I got produced some flowers and was the only one flowering at the time and did set a couple of fruits. The main thing to watch out for is very cold winter temperatures. I will probably protect mine when we get any temperatures below -3°C, as I don’t want to get the tips damaged like last winter. They should be able to take a little lower without any damage, but as they are all in small containers I’m just going to bring them inside during any very cold spells.
