Plan a trip here and you’ll have a place to stay. Actually, that would be so fun!! And UtAH is gorgeous this time of year .

In my experience Hoya Curtisii is more thirsty than my other hoyas despite the succulent leaves. While I can get away with underwatering a lot of my hoyas, the curtisii is just one that doesn't like to dry out. Putting it in pon or leca wouldn't be a bad idea, tbh.

for alocatia corms, a method that works really well for me is in water. I use a small glass and fill it with clear vase filler beads (I think you could also use perlite, but it´s harder to see the white roots) and then water, this way I can stick the corm in and it does not sink and stay upright, and there is space for roots. I tried moss first and nothing happened in 2 month, after 1-2 weeks in water you could see the tip getting green and opening, and little root bumps.

Fluval stratum is a great 👍 👌 rooting medium...

I had the same problem with my Hoya Curtisii…it was yellowing and dying. I tried to rehab it and I lost it…it is on my hard no list for now. So you are not alone on this one. 😊

You could also try tinting your skylights so that the suns rays aren’t as intense? That would help with cooling however I’m not sure how that would take away from your plants receiving natural light

I’ve found that my hoya curtisii is quite fussy when it comes to “disturbing” it. So anytime i repot it or move it a bit, it throws a fit. But once I leave it alone for a while it is fine. I also have mine in a greenhouse cabinet!

My husband has done loads of research into air con for this summer and we're going to get a unit from Meaco. They're a UK company and you can get replacement parts etc. so much better than a system you'd have to totally replace if it broke.

Hi Claire! Thanks for another lovely video :) So excited to see your tattoo!! I am also SO excited for the progress you and Joli have made- I am certain you will continue to get on well with her now as I have gone through the exact same process with my rescue girl Zelda. I got her when she was about 1y/o and she was just THE most prey-driven, anxious, and unfortunately fear-reactive pup I’ve ever owned. I struggled desperately to socialize/train her for ~3 yrs before going through a “Feisty Fido” class at a nearby Humane Society that changed everything for us. She is ~8 y/o now and it is just amazing to me how far she’s come. With very deliberate attention and lots of patience & love, we have been able to socialize her with multiple additions to the family including her own emotional support pup when she was ~5y/o (who significantly helped calm her, I must say). But more impressive is her acceptance of 4 kittens who-after 2yrs of painstakingly socializing her with a basket muzzle and very controlled environments-she has deemed a part of her pack and lives with peacefully 🥰 (..I wouldn’t trust her with just any cat, of course, but I am just amazed at how careful attention and positive reinforcement has been able to calm her prey drive to the extent it has). I have long felt that your struggles with Joli are akin to what I’ve gone through with Zelda, and I am just over the moon that you’ve made so much progress recently. 🥹😁 On a planty note: I would hypothesize that the roots on the Frydeck in pon are so much more dense with the finer secondary & tertiary roots because the semi-hydro keeps them from drying out and dying back, so they have a much easier time proliferating. I believe alocasia in general have a really hard time maintaining the thinner root structure if they dry out too much, which ends up stunting their growth quite a bit. This can cause a difficult balance to strike in soil mixtures when root rot from overwatering is more of a concern, but under-watering repeatedly causes secondary & tertiary root death. I have actually taken to using self-watering pots for many of my plants that are very sensitive to drying out, but I am still using a soil mixture with very chunky pearlite mixed in to allow for enough oxygen…seems risky, I know, but my plants in that set up are loving it so 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ I will have to try pon one of these days, I just haven’t invested in it yet since the other method seems to be working for me. My curtsii did the same thing so I cut it up like u would the soh and put it in moss in a closed container and left the moss wet not dripping but wet and it took forever but it rooted:) I hope that helps

I’ve been using Lechuza pon for a long time and I add perlite and orchiata but pon alone is good enough. Tips on using pon 1. Wash your pon until sediments run clear. 2. There are 2 types of Lechuza pon the Basic one without fertilizer and the common one with fertilizer so you can use whatever you prefer. 3 i find that adding perlite and orchid bark specifically orchiata makes my plant root stronger rather than just pure pon. Pon is reusable, you can boil it to sterilize it and one more thing is if it’s exposed to light it will eventually grow algae so pre emptive flushing with diluted hydrogen peroxide solution will prevent that.

Looking at that sphagnum filled root ball on the begonia gives me hives😅 I think if it were me I'd let it grow in that a bit longer and then just take a bunch of cuttings and start over🤷🏻‍♀️ most of my begonias root up pretty well so chopping it may be the easiest route. I have same issue with heat in the summer months. A fully installed air con with separate internal and external units is the best solution but costly to have fitted. I bought a 'portable' unit for about £200 few years ago which works well on the days its needed. Do use a lot of electricity though, when its running and cooling its uses about 1kw/h so at today's rates around 35p an hour. You do need to have a bendy pipe out the window, but I bought a fabric surround from Amazon to help seal the gap. Air con does seem a bit extravagant but in a warm apartment on days its 30+ degrees C you'll be so happy you did!

Yeah I reckon choose a really good long movie and sit with your Begonia and just do it 😆 It's too beautiful a Begonia to not put in the effort IMO. Thoroughly enjoyed watching the transfer to pon and potting up the rescue plants. And I hope Yule's transformation continues for the benefit of both of you 💪

Hi Claire! Beautiful plants! I have a question: once you moved your alocasia to pon do you add hydroponic solution to the bottom of the pot or just water? How do you feed your alocasia in pon?

Had the same issues with that Hoya had to re root it several times, think I’ve finally got it growing. Lost most of the plant in the process. Did some in perlite & some in moss. Both worked.

Hi Claire I live in Australia, and we use air-conditioning for around 4-5 months 😂. I would suggest getting a reverse cycle air-conditioning as it is for hot and cold saves you from having heaters all over the place and uses the least amount of power. I can give you some info. As you see with your pair of alocasia Frydek. The one in pon has more "feeder" roots ( secondary roots) that are more prone to appear when the top of primary roots find a though medium as a rock ( perlite/pon are an example) instead of the primary roots that grow as taproot ( more chunky because them can store small amount of sucrose ). For a general rule most of the scientist/botanist say that a root system with more feeder roots can be more affordable for you to get a healthy plant. Also because eventually if the root's apex get trimmed or rot the secondary roots can actually became the new primary roots overtime

I only have 3 sorts of Hoya and they're all relatively small, but if you'd like to try a different substrate, mine LOVE Seramis. They're in transparent pots with drainage holes and I water when they're almost completely dry. The structure of the substrate also makes it easy to see when that is as it goes from dark to light, faded orange

That is a Florida Ghost, for sure. Kaylee wouldn't keep a green since it's not a rare plant. Give it high light and hopefully it'll lighten up for you!

I also noticed that when you put the last plant in it's outer pot it went right to the bottom of the pot. I thought if you are having a reservoir the plant needs to be above the water and you use a wicking system. Is that really not necessary?

I don't know whether it works for dogs, but there are those nets that you can install on your balcony to cat-proof them

Why dont you keep the begonia in moss? I have my nepenthes and other carniferous plants in a moss with perlite mixture. And when it grows a bit you can propogate a section in perlite and pot that in a different substrate

Hello Claire! I am getting a saguaro cactus tattoo next month. They are from my home state and I am moving before fall. Maybe one day I will own if my own; however, a nice tattoo is more affordable than a cacti. I’m excited to see your plant tattoo!

I don't know how available or affordable they are in the UK, but we chose ductless A/C (aka mini-split). It does have the outside compressor, but each room has its own small unit with individual controls. You don't have to cool every room at the same level saving energy. I live in Southeastern US. 🥵

We have bought LG air conditioner at Costco it was about $800 but keeps our small apartment comfortable.

My Curtisii was doing so well and I dropped it had to repot it and it’s gone down hill since.

plop the begonia with the moss into a pot of pumice, water for the moss, the pumice will draw out excess water, pot with drainange holes or orchid pot 👍

Can I move my mini monstera and my Adansonii to pon. They are only small and in 2" pots right now. Can I go up to a larger pot with pon than I normally would if I were planting them in soil? I have some 16 ounce and 24 ounce deli cups I'd like to use after putting some holes in them but I'm worried they might be too large for these small plants?

I have the same problem with the Curtisii! I have had 3 separate cutings of it and i have failed to root it successfully in moss or water. Recently, as my last attempt I've put a 3 node cutting in pertile inside a closed jar and its finally looking like it will survive and it started rooting! I believe they are quite susceptible to over watering

I dont know if it has made a difference for you or not, but if I don’t rinse my pon well before using, things die in it.

You are saying that plastic cups are not the best choice but the nursery pots are also made of plastic.

I swear EVERYONE (myself included) could take or leave florida ghost, until they get one. It’s now one of my favorite plants and I really really so get why kaylee ellen is always hyping it up! It’s just so fun to grow and really stands out unlike any other plant! It’s so easy and fast growing too which really just makes it such a perfect plant!!

I just love Alocasia too, but sadly, in the last three or so weeks, I have lost about 7, 8, maybe 9 (I have lost count!) of my Alocasia to root rot...I am to blame. In February, I went to Mexico for about 10 days, and had my daughter care for my plants while I was gone. She is a planty person like me, and did a great job, but she watered the Alocasia a little more than I liked, so I figured I'd let them dry out a bit. Well, I let them dry out a bit tooo much, and when I resumed watering, root rot set in. I moved them over from soil to perlite, with no success. I've had difficulty rehabbing anything with root rot. I don't have pon, I do have Leca, but never used it for Alocasia, because, until recently, have always had success with soil. Have you ever tried Alocasia in Leca? I am thinking of moving the rest of the Alocasia to semi-hydro before I leave again next month, for two weeks - Turkey and Greece. I've never been, so excited to go, but so afraid to leave, at the same time. Any advice? Btw, my curtisii is my hardiest, fastest growing Hoya, so I'm sorry to hear that you are having such a hard time with your drama queen. I've had quite the opposite experience with mine.

Portable Air conditioners aren’t very good ime ..they’ll cool a room but won’t do your whole flat, .. they’re also 2000w+ so very expensive to run (particularly nowadays) cuz as soon as you turn them off the “effect” is quickly lost.. they need venting outside ..also plants hate them.. You’d be better using water cooler fans, they aren’t as effective at AC but much cheaper and because they cool by evaporation of the water/ice in them the humidity unaffected in the room.. this will be my first summer without AC as mine broke last year during that heatwave, I have large south facing windows in my flat (similar size to yours) so it gets mad hot quick in here too 😕 Re the begonia, just put a leca layer at the bottom of a no drainage pot and leave it as it is, I have all my anthurium this way.. begonias hate me though 😆
