I decided that I want to transfer more of my alocasia collection over to Lechuza pon since they love this substrate and it's saving my plants. I am transferring 2 more alocasia over to pon from being in soil in today's video. I also propagate tons of corms I found during the unpotting.

Put my Dragon's Breath in Pon and WOW did they adjust well. They were both in soil for about 5 months and had death plugs on both. I got scared and only did one of them at first. When the plant doubled it's size in about 10 days, I transferred the other . I am so incredibly pleased with Pon for my Alocasia. Really excited to see the updates!

You mentioned something about them going into shock when moving them, And that's definitely accurate from what i've seen. I swear, my dragon's breath is the most resilient baby ever! I have literally put her through the Ringer and she is still alive and well😂😂😂 Just a future tip, the soil on the roots comes off super easy with a feather duster! I'm sure you know this, but you don't have to get as much off when switching to pon as you do with leca

I’ve gotten SO many alocasia varieties over the summer and the last week as well, and recently bought some amendments and supplies for semi-hydro. I’m so scared about rotting them, because the ones that I have are all in a chunky soilless mix that I made, and have been thriving I’m worried about changing anything, but I love the idea of pon and leca so I switched a cuprea that I have mixed feelings about into leca, and then one of my variegated frydeks into a diy pon mix with mini leca mixed in as well.. I have 1 juvenile var. frydek that was sent to me already in pon so I kept it in that, and it seems to be doing well/giving me lots of new leaves, so I figured I’d order more stuff for semi-hydro and give it a shot 😅 It’s good that I got the GT Foliage Focus as well because it’s definitely been the most recommended one I’ve been seeing lately online and I already knew of an Etsy shop that sells it, and I’ve been liking it so far!

I'm glad you're trying it out and got some supplies! I really want to DIY a lechuza version lol. My regular fydek that was in soil has grown back in like 3-4 months in pon which was really fast I feel like. If some drop leaves or roots rot from the transfer I feel like they'll bounce back in no time. I'm just so happy I gave it a go because I thought for sure soil was going to be my go to for everything. I had no idea how much I would love it!

Woow your Frydeks are the fullest Alocasias I've ever seen🤯😍 but soo pretty! Mine only stay as 3-4 leaves and don't push out more...but they were in soil lol. I gave mg black velvet away and kept the corms and mg Pink Polly is back to a chonk stem because it dropped all its leaves on me🤣 but also saved her corms lol.

Could you give details of how you care for your plants during the transition from soil to pon, do you use a reservoir straight away? Have you encountered root rot on transfer? Love your videos Melissa!

We have a 100% corm success rate in Pon! 6 corms so far. We put them in Pon inside the Ikea grow cabinet and water them every few days due to them having little to no root sometimes

I haven't made a specific video on it I would say I just have some various plants I have transferred to it. Mostly alocasia and some anthurium and philos. I feel like once I actually start to add fertilizer and get more experience with it I can definitely make a dedicated video. I started using it in June so I still feel new with it! I've had pretty good transfers so far and haven't lost anything yet.

Yes! The same thing happens to my heterophylla. Grows giant leaves and then the stem gets mushy 🤯. I havent made the move to semihydro with it yet but it pushes out so many corms that i might just experiment and try that with a new corm vs transfer. Looking forward to seeing how the transfer works for you. ❤ the video.

It's so weird! It's the only alocasia I own that does that after I water it. Hoping it stops being in pon though I am very curious to see how it responds! The corms seem to do well in stratum so thinking it was a soil/water thing.

I transferred a large stingray to pon and it threw a fit. Lost 4 huge leaves and of course many soil roots rotted but it’s finally adjusting and pushed out its first new leaf in pon. I think it’ll be ok. My less mature alocasia transferred with no shock. So you’re right about the longer plant has been in soil the higher the shock.

I think if you dust the root system with Mycorrhizal bacteria powder then people would have a 100% success rate with medium change. It takes the worry out of a lot of plant issues. I call it "zombie dust" because you can save the deadest of plants. I once regrew an entire root system on a tomato sprout that I accidentally broke off while separating. And I mean the entire root system broke off, the whole thing. I pretty much take all my new starters and wash the soil off to sit the plant in a spring water/Mycorrhizal mix until I have an insane root structure. Then I plant in whatever I want. I can't say enough good things about it in the garden and in the house. I'm redoing my entire property rn (had an invasive vine problem that I'm allergic to). Had to spray my entire lawn so I'm replanting grass plugs and I even put the Mycorrhizal bacteria on the plugs

Ok, you got me! Ordered some Pon and gonna try it. Got a baby 2” pot Frydek on a clearance shelf of all places at the nursery and will transfer my struggling azlani and lagging scalprum as well. Pon eta still two weeks away, so they are moving into water now to help transition and into the new substrate when my Pon arrives hopefully first week of December.

I recently repotted to leca, but I think I should have transferred to PON, but it was cheaper with leca. My Cuprea is responding well. My silver dragon has a new leaf, my black velvet lost the lone leaf. 😅 But I have corms that are in stratum, then PON. Fun!

You can make your own PON 1 PART ZEOLITE 1 PART PUMICE 1 PART LAVA ROCK Slow release fertilizer 4 in, pot 1-1.5 tsp 6 in. pot 2-3 tsp 8 in. pot 4-5 tsp

The very pointy tip goes up, but if you can't tell which end is which, lay the corm on its side. Plants know what to to. The roots will find their way down, and the leaves, their way up. Depending on the medium, humidity, warmth, and light, you might see sprouting in 3 weeks or 3 months.

I had a mystic alocasia I just bought 3 weeks ago and it started one by itself be getting a yellow leaf that would turn to mush! I was so afraid it was a bacterial infection that I threw the plant away😢..I would like to eventually switch my alocasias to pon too.

I know this question is older and you may know the answer by now, but thought I'd answer anyway in case others come along and wonder too. The medium she used to plant the corms, is Fluval Stratum. Sold as an aquarium substrate at most pet stores and also sold on Amazon. Happy growing! 💚

You will need to yes. Lechuza comes with 6 months of slow release so after that I will be adding a hydroponic fertilizer :)

I keep water in the reservoir and watch the meter for when it gets low then I add more water. I probably add water once a week. Some that are more rooted drink it up faster so I have to watch them more closely.

I have two baby Alocasias, they each only have to leaves. I don't think I water them enough or give them enough humidity, but they are still growing. Do all the leaves die off and the plant grow dormant for winter? ❄️☃️ I thought I heard this on one of the other plant channels I watch.😢

If the environment isn’t optimal for growth during winter they can go dormant yes. I try to keep corms and smaller ones warm in my cabinet and under light/higher humidity to keep them still growing well.

In my experience transferring alocasia from soil to leca only one in ten died (i.e.literally one I tried). They love their life in leca even though I don't fully know what I' doing 😂

Im not use how to use pon. You mentioned that you dont have to use a self-watering pot. If you don't, what kind of watering schedule do you use?

I guess it depends on how quickly it dries. You just have to keep an eye on the water level and how fast the plant is rooting. They’ll use up more water as they grow more roots ☺️

Hey Melissa, I don’t think rinsing your PON before use is that big of a deal because you are using pots that drain. I use a mix of drainage and no drainage vessels. For the no drainage, it’s a necessity for me. I feel the sediment can choke out the roots. Plus, when it settles it’s ugly (I use clear glass).

What I do for the sediment issue is placing some pon in a large fine strainer and sift it out by gently shaking it over the trash can. This helps to remove a lot of the fine sediment right before I do rinsing. I only rinse my pon because the look of clean pon is just chefs kiss lol but it's not necessary. Hope this helps!

Hi Melissa. Love your videos. I moved my alocasia to pon after watching your videos and they are growing new big leaves! However, I have noticed that on the surface of all of the pon for all of my pots have what looks like white mold. Did you ever have this problem? I am not sure what to do, and I have some concern if this is not healthy for me, since it is looking like a furry layer on all of them.

All of my alocasia do so much better in pon. I would love to have a dragon’s breath. I don’t have one of those. I keep most of my alocasia in pon and in a closed 30 gal fish tank with the grow light on top. My polly grew out of the tank. LOL 😂😂

I use it in a variety of ways, self watering pots, normal pots with holes inside a cache pot, cheapie pots that have a wick others that have some substrate at resovoir level, some I have without drainage just in glass and I keep an eye on the roots and water level, I've planted seeds in pon, corms (though I prefer to start with shallow puddle method then transfer) just make sure all soil is rinsed gently from the roots before transferring The pon sucks water up from the resovoir the top may appear dry but if you stick your finger in its damp but airy

Thank you for showing the step-by-step of transferring to Lechuza Pon. Did you use hydrogen peroxide on the Alocasia roots at any step? Also, what, if anything, did you add to the pitcher you watered the corms placed in Fluval substrate ? Thanks, Melissa! On a slightly different topic, here in the Pacific NW we have lotsa rain already collected to water our plants. I remember you thought your rain water may have caused rot from ______________? (can't remember); had you pre-treated it w/hydrogen peroxide? Or is there any preventive for what you experienced? TY again!

Hi no hydrogen peroxide use just rinsed with water. For the stratum I just use water! It has lots of nutrients already so I just make sure to keep it under light, humidity and warmth to help them sprout. The rainwater I believe caused some fungal issues since it was collected off the gutter :)

@@plantsbymelissa Thanks. My buckets are filled with rain direct from the sky, so maybe I'll continue using it, since I've had no issues in the past. Re stratum, one of my peperomias recently toppled over at the soil line, probably due to overwatering. I plunked the whole plant into a little glass dish of Fluval and the sweet thing is still living after 3 weeks ... hoping it'll grow roots eventually. Really like the stuff tho I still sprinkle a bit of mycorrhizae on the surface where the roots hit, even knowing that usually More is *not* More when it comes to substrate additives.

I haven’t :) I only did the one set of tissue cultures and it was coir and perlite mix that was provided with the kit I received ☺️

Can we transfer Alocasia from soil to pon at any stage? I have big ones in 8 or 9-inch pots, and I'd like to know if they are too big or too old to be transferred to a new medium. Thank you!

It’s Lechuza Pon. Pon like hydroponic. It’s a mixture of lava rock, zeolite, pumice, slow release fertilizer, etc made by the company Lechuza. It’s a way to grow plants using passive hydroponics. They grow quicker and have less root rot. Also no guessing about when it’s time to water.

I dont use pon, i use Mollys aroid mix (worm castings, leca, bark, coco peat). Would my frydek transfer ok from soil to this substrate?

How did the variegated one transfer now that’s it’s been 3 months? I just bought a baby one and I’m terrified I’m going to kill it. I’ve never done anything semi hydro and it’s honestly a new world to me. Want to make sure I don’t kill it 😅

You can sign up for email notifications on lechuza's website! That's what I did last time and was able to buy some. I feel like it doesn't take too long for it to come back in stock. I check amazon every once in a while too. You can diy it as well if you want to go that route. It has lava rock, zeolites and pumice!
