The Platinum Alocasia was the most carefree easy going alocasia I ever grew. I grew it in semi-hydro leca. I neglected it, I forgot to water it, it didn't get premiere lighting, and it was so drama free I sometimes I forgot I had it. It never dropped a leaf. Never had crispy edges. And it grew a leaf so big I thought it was secretly a spacecraft and it was going to fly away.

Melissa, personally I don’t think you will have issues with Bisma, the only thing I found with mine in the last 1.5 years is that it didn’t like as much light as other alocasias. Also its leaves are much thicker and it doesn’t require as much water. But this of course in my environment and my low humidity ( 40%) with your expertise you should do fine ❤️Thanks for all the great content!

Hi Melissa- just wanted to let you know to look at the ingredients of your TPS. Mine came mixed with sugar and it brought SO MANY ants into my room! I'm curious why you go from soil to water to pon instead of soil to pon? Wouldn't it be an easier transition for the roots to go from soil to pon? It's my understanding that soil roots tend to rot in water, and water roots dry out in anything but water.

Pon question. Since the roots haven't gotten down into the reservoir yet, aren't you supposed to treat it like soil and top water for a few weeks, and then after they grow down into the reservoir you fill it with water? Or am I doing it wrong hahah
@plantsbymelissa
@plantsbymelissa 8 месяцев назад
No, I think that is how you're supposed to do it! I keep a little water because I'm worried it will dry out too fast lol. So far everything has worked out minus the one alocasia I transferred from soil. It rotted really fast.
@shvnique

Did you keep the Anthurium in the soil plug until you transferred it to water? I order from Green Escape very often and I usually just trial and error with my potting lol. I usually repot them right away and remove the plug and so far it’s been okay but I want to learn safer ways to care for my plants upon receiving them.
@plantsbymelissa

I put it in water right after the unboxing! the rootball was so small and it didn't have a plug or a pot just some soil wrapped around it and most of it came off after I pulled it away. I could have potted it up right away into a pot with more soil but I am loving semi hydro for anthuriums!

I've found alocasias to be the easiest to transfer to pon out of all of my other genuses I grow. I've also found that rot happens more if you don't spread the rootball out within the substrate when potting it up. So if it's got some well developed roots I try to spread them as best I cant while potting deeper than what I would initially expected then pull up on the plant a centimeter or two to get those roots to stretch out and then backfill with more of the substrate.

Yes! I have some lava rock, zeolites and pumice on my amazon for DIY pon - I haven't made it DIY though because after doing some research - some argue that it's not really cheaper and just to buy Lechuza. Lechuza claims their pon has the ideal water to air ratio for plants. I'm not sure what the amounts are of each component but I believe there's less zeolite.
