An Ohio man was charged after a child shot a gun inside his home in a chilling incident that was caught on video. MORE: abc7.com/ohio-child-shoots-gu...
*10 days in jail and two years of probation* 'Columbus City Attorney Zach Klein’s office said the bullet nearly struck the child, burning the child and causing short-term hearing loss. Another child was in the room. In what was the first test of the city’s new safe storage law for firearms, Klein announced Tuesday that the boy's father, 28-year-old Matthew Rivas, pleaded guilty April 4 to two counts of negligent storage of a firearm and one count of child endangerment. Franklin County Municipal Court Judge Jarrod B. Skinner sentenced Rivas to 10 days in jail and two years of probation. If Rivas does not successfully complete his probation, he will face 170 days in jail. Skinner also ordered Rivas to pay a $150 fine and ordered the firearm from the incident to be destroyed.' So much is wrong with this video. The fact that the firearm was left in the most negligent place of all time, the fact that the parents were immediately ready to scream at the kids for setting off a firearm that was left there, then the fact that the father who attempted to pick it up had a negligent discharge as well. Absolute fuckery.
I think you're misreading their hysteria, I don't believe they were immediately ready to scream at their kids. They were confused and terrified. The statements they made out loud were pretty General and indirect not naming anyone in particular (they were experiencing a stressor of anxiety caused by the sound of The gunshot along with confusion) if they had reacted more calmly I'm sure their behavioral actions would be different. Beyond that they are definitely negligent in the safety of firearms

The gun might've learned from AR-15's how to shoot by themselves, perhaps. All you hear about in the media is how they are a problem and not the people using them. 😉
what amazes me most is the fact the negligent adults/parents yelled at the children when they are to blame not the kids. no 1 should leave a firearm unsecured period no matter the circumstances unless you intend on using it its called negligence and gets people killed
well thats not really smart you should scare your kids into never wanted to touch them, ive yelled at mine so bad for coming close to my closet “where i keep my safe” that they wouldn’t dare go near it again, come the time when they are old enough they will learn firearm safety
And then dad doesn't even know how to pick up a gun safely. This is a major problem with some gun owners. Being a 2nd amendment advocate, I believe all gun owners should have extensive gun handling training.
@@DRob-gq3kiall gun laws are unconstitutional Who's going to pay for the safety gun handling course? Are you going to deny some people their rights because they can't afford that course?
@@Jordan23501 I keep a 380 in the car I don't like carrying with one in the chamber because most people go their whole life never needing to use it and its not that hard to rack the slide fast if you train drawing that way
These are the very type of 'parents' that later claim they had their gun secured and have no idea how their child got a hold of it. The very same type who claim they only turned away for a minute when in fact they weren't minding their kids at all for a while. I hope DCS took these kids away and does not return them until the parents have taken mandatory parenting and child development classes.
They shouldn't have guns or kids to begin with if they're so irresponsible that their kids found it in the couch in the first place. We have gun cases for a reason.
It’s people like this that give gun owners a bad name. Not only did he not have accountability of his firearm but to immediately have a negligent discharge right after us straight stupidity
Yeah, but think about it. If he left it out again the kid might remember being scolded and not touch the gun again, which would in turn save the kids life, possibly. So, maybe, it's not all bad. Let your brain chew on that one for a while. 😉
@@qdukezit absolutely is but sorry, it’s not funny…that crap has destroyed so many lives, families…this gen growing up, the kid in diapers…wonder how his mind will be? All parents make mistakes and all parents put their kids' lives at risk every time they put them into a vehicle. I'm not supporting bad gun handling, just stating the facts, ma'am.
@@saxon1177some mistakes are completely preventable, like this one. parents do make mistakes, but mistakes like this, a normal parent wouldn't make. also you're forgetting the fact that they immediately blamed the child. and sure, parents put their kids in vehicles, but they don't get in a crash every time they drive. when a child that size and age sets off a gun, the recoil alone could hurt them. not a good comparison, and not a good argument.
Looks like the man is trying to blame the kid for his own negligence. He should be castrated and not be allowed to have a gun again. I'm glad no one got hurt.
That's a little harsh, don't you think? How about some gun training and a gun safe. That way if an attacker tries to hurt or kill them, they can defend their selves.
stupid parents blaming stupid things on the kids is really a stupid thing. having a gun lying around with children under 10 and then blaming them for shooting is just really dumb
How about we protect kids and Guns by making people responsible adults. I've had guns since I was 18 I'm 41 and I've had two kids and I never left my gun in the couch cushion nor have I left it anywhere else for that matter not accidentally not intentionally. BECAUSE I'M A RESPONSIBLE ADULT.
@@lulz4lulzdude just because some pit bulls are dangerous doesn’t mean all pit bulls are dangerous. You are just blaming the dog because they have a bad reputation.
@@epiccmaneven if it was a Chihuahua, he’d still be right. Guns don’t just decide to shoot people. Some dogs on the other hand, in general decide to go off and kill a person.
@@epiccman it's higher risk of attacks and injuries (dogs with box head like American staffy or a pitball etc) I've seen what dogs can do when they are dangerous and when they are good
i dont really think that they would have mental pain it is but i think that they might end up being scared of guns but nothing really happened to them and everyone ended up safe so maybe they would
Let this be a lesson: if you must leave a gun out of a secured location make sure to keep the safety ON, AND make sure NOT to leave it anywhere unattended! Especially around children!
correction there is never a right time to have a firearm out of a secure location unless you intend on using it safety or not, if a 2 year old can figure out how to use a cell phone you think its hard for them to figure out how to switch a firearm from safe to fire mode i dont think so.
@@rooga85 the safety on guns exists to prevent accidental discharges like this (that’s what it was designed for) If that barrel had been slightly lower when the gun discharged the family would’ve been arranging a funeral instead of a hospital visit!

They should be charged with child endangerment. They put a gun where 99% of the time somebody is sitting at. They put that in the worse spot in the history of worse spots
No, the gun is not meant for hurting anyone it's for protecting, its mostly dads who get guns to protect their family, it a common thing but a gun can't be under a couch or else a kid might pull the trigger
So glad none of the children were hurt! I didn't even read the details in the description to begin with and could see that the "dad" was pretending to be shocked I hope the family are safe now without him
that one of the craziest things ive ever seen... i hope charges were brought up on the gun owner. im pro 2a all the way but this is a disgusting level of incompetence.
I’m glad they’re ok. This could have ended so badly. That gun should have never been left unattended with children around. Educate yourself before owning a weapon. Join a training course, gun safety lessons, and use a safe for proper storage. A gun becomes dangerous when a irresponsible owner is in hand period. This man couldn’t even simply pick it up without discharging it.
@@arthurmead5341no, that wasn’t the 2nd amendment, that was the gun control laws. Gun control laws so the elites can rule over the peasants without consequences.
This is where a portable fireproof safe with a combo lock would come in handy in addition to the trigger lock that comes with every firearm thats purchased
This is why whenever you are a parent who has firearms whether they are locked away or not. . . TEACH YOUR CHILDREN FIREARMS SAFETY…..even if it wasn’t locked away…IF YOU TEACH YOUR CHILDREN FIREARMS SAFETY THEY WONT DO THIS.
Yes teach a TODDLER about firearms safety instead NOT leaving a firearm (with a round chambered) laying around. While you're at it, you can finally leave your car running and unlocked if you just teach your child about road safety. Problem solved, silly kid! If only the child who has probably only recently learned how a toilet works knew not to touch a gun, it would be TOTALLY fine to leave that gun laying around, chambered! Easy fix! 🤦♂ /s
Being a 2nd amendment advocate, this is ridiculous. You should store your weapon behind a lock, especially, with children around. Also, store the ammo separately behind a lock.
Hopefully he got charged with negligence. Needs to be consequences. I've seen a similar video of a little girl accidentally shooting her hand after finding a loaded gun lying in a couch. How tf do you just leave a loaded gun lying around, especially when you have a family living with you? Unbelievable.
@@PRECIADOR true, we should also ban all sharp edges including knives saws and other tools because there are accidents and deaths. Please, seek help if you genuinely believe this bs
Imagine if everyone in America had a gun. How many people would die every day over stupid stuff like cutting someone off in traffic? People would be killing each other over parking spaces lol
Same thing happened which led to the 6 yo taking his moms gun to school and shooting his teacher in Virginia. Mom said the gun was secured in her nightstand drawer
@Dylan Ashley read the comments, everyone is saying this is the fault of gun laws when in reality these people didn't even follow the rules. You are supposed to have your weapon locked up if children are in the household.
You nailed it. Now we are in a serious mental health crisis with a crumbling mental health system. Guns are everywhere. Shootings are now daily, soon to be hourly. Do the math.
1 : All grown ups should be charged to the extent of the law. 2: Never allow all grown ups to own any guns for life. 3: Kids should be taken away. 2 Cents...
These people put cameras in their own house, and now will be going to jail for literally recording their own crimes. Amazing. Self Snitching at its finest.
