This is common sense to me, a stadium shouldn't just be a stadium. It should be a district surrounded by shops, cafes, restaurants, bars, clubs, hotels, the ability to host outside socials, etc. Going to an event should encourage people to look to stay for more than 2 hours, more like 2 days and put funds into the economy.

Exactly, if not the whole area is dead. A stadium should be a part integrated to something bigger. For example that's one of the success of the London 2012 legacy plan, the olympic stadium is part of a big (and needed) metropolitan park. And with other services and urban equipments for the community in the northeast London. An arena or stadium should have the capability and flexibility of different activities in its grounds, inside and outside of itself as you say.

It is common sense to most of us but the way our society works is by a mix or bureaucracy and profit-driven market which don't care. Reusable containers for things like shampoo makes sense from an environmental perspective but you rarely see manufacturers put effort into it.

The arenas and parks in munich are still heavily used after Olympics 1972. The Olympic Park is one of the top 3 nice and big parks in the city

I can confirm that stadiums are put to good use after the events they were built for. I lived in Nanjing a few years ago and they had once hosted the Youth Olympic Games years before. I visited the stadium and the public is welcome to use the courts and tracks for playing badminton or just jogging etc. There were many lovely restaurants to visit and boutiques and a lot of office space was being leased by businesses. It was a lovely spacious and calm place that was definitely not sitting empty and abandoned. The success of China overall is their ability to think and plan ahead, not just looking at the present.

Most of the issues on construction are the changes during construction. Once enough changes happen, that initial work would be obsolete.

As a experience Project manager before ( Now Retired ) , this Project shiold be SUBMITTED for Project Management AWARD at World Level. Design and Build of this Super Sport Complex within 30 months is "JUST IMPOSSIBLE" if the Arch, Project management, Contractors and Specialist Contractor are used. More REALISTIC time would be 60 to 72 months !!! And 90% CHANCE of COST OVERRUNS !

Very few countries pull this off because of politics. Politicians typically have to overpromise to get elected, and they inevitably under-deliver. Asia used to be an exception because of a culture of modesty, but it looks like even Japan has now 'Americanised'. Switzerland is the only country I heard of recently where they built the world's longest train tunnel, and completed it ahead of schedule and under budget. But that's the Swiss. They are organised, competent, and they must have a culture where telling the truth rather than advertising is still a thing.

@@rui4762 When I visited a Chinese city, I saw some construction workers still working past 9 pm. I think many workers work in shifts to finish a project quickly. It's still better than those hardly working workers who take years to finish simple road projects in the US.

A project similar to this was supposed to happen in Calgary, Canada as well. It was called "Calgary Next". It was ultimately abandoned as the location was contaminated with creosote and the cleanup costs were astronomical.

This is a beautiful stadium. It also looks like another similar facility in Shenzhen. Now that the video explains it, I understand why these are shaped as they are - combining several multiuse venues into a single venue with amenities in between. It is also good to know the planners in China have thought about the community, and what happens to the facilities after the events they were designed for are over. There are far too many poorly planned Olympic bids that ended up saddling cities/countries in debt, and they are left with useless facilities. Hopefully that will not be the case here. At least China's large population and increasing sporting profile makes it more likely these projects are viable and sustainable.

Not exactly. Sports facilities in the US actually get built quite efficiently because they are actually profitable, not like many ppl thought. But things such as public infrastructure projects do move very slow because they can not turn profitable quickly.

@@Joemamahahahaha821 sponge city is even not designed for such severe circumstances, such city need more lower places like more lake and park, and enlarge the current drainage system and river, so it can hold such big flood in the future. This isn't just problem of zhengzhou, a city in north china that doesn't have a lot of rain in the past, it's for every city in the world, the severe weather will only be more, not less, climate change is just the beginning, the worst days are not coming yet.

2 1/2 years to finish....they have been working on the Brooklyn bridge, Manhattan, Bridge, and Verrazano bridge for well OVER a decade or more - EACH. And they ALWAYS pick the busiest time, morning rush hours to do the jobs. The incompetency and profit over everything else is KILLING our infrastructures. WE CANNOT EVEN FIX small bridges OVER A DECADE!

canada, toronto, just started subway expansion, 7.8 km, gonna take at least 8 fucking years, if every goes well, but u know the rest of the story... compared to China, within 10 years around 20 to 30k KM of HSR built, and that doesnt include subway lines lol.

Shame about unused Olympic venues in places like Rio and Athens. Surely the government can fund some youth sporting programs for local junior schools, high schools and universities to keep them in constant use. Was their plan just to leave them after the games and do exactly nothing? Luckily London had a legacy team who’s specific job it was to make sure they remain in use well after the games. Did the Brazilians and Greeks not think this was worth their time?

Brazil and Greece weren’t fit to hold the games economically. However a few brown envelopes under the table was enough for them to get it. London, Sydney and Tokyo all have exceptional Olympic parks still in constant use because they could afford/already had the infrastructure and interest needed to sustain their parks. I imagine Paris, LA and Brisbane will all have successful, long lasting and in use Olympic parks

@@kushal4956 No. China ranks poorly on HDI mainly because they aren't a 'democracy'. The UK still has pollution problems despite the loss of most of their industrial base, and higher and worsening rates of both street and white collar crime, but the HDI glosses over these. China has lower suicide, alcoholism and drug use rates than Finland, "the happiest nation in the world", but Finland is a Western style 'democracy'! China has far lower rates of crime and homicide than Brazil, but Brazil has democratically elected Jair Bolsonaro and his criminal cronies.

Chengdu has a population of 21 million, so as the video said, is not like it will be unused after the Universiade, contrary to the Brazil Olympic games in which they build crazy stadiums in the middle of nowhere

There many examples of this type stadium complexes designed with public use in mind in China so this is nothing new frankly.. :) All 1st and 2nd tier cities have these.

Actually some City’s do a great job of building stadiums & Parks that are used long after the games are over but some like Rio don’t take advantage of the games!✅
