I'm a Chinese and I've lived in Australia since 2014. When I first left my home I was dumb I thought I wanted to live under a western culture with more "freedom". But now I think everyone just lives under society contracts. The way people distinguish free or not isn't really depending on the true freedom, it's on the political operations of these contracts. This coronavirus pandemic made me decide I'm going back to China in the future. Every country has pros and cons. But the arrogance I see from most western countries could be dangerous. The way and the contents western media talk about China actually block people's eyes. If western world sees China as an enemy, at least they and their people should know their enemy well. I see some inefficiency and inability in western world nowadays. They don't emphasise on STEM education as China does, even worse, they talk bad on what China is doing. I think those sanctions on China can't put China in danger, but it put US itself in danger. And as a Chinese, we never want to be top 1 and control other countries. An easier and safer and more stable life is what Chinese people want. And we can only achieve this by keep learning. This attribute is deep down in Chinese culture and history.
Honestly, nowadays it is rare to hear a brilliant voice like this, no bias, fact-oriented, and dive into the root cause of achievements in China. Good job!
Actually Chinese are already smart. Look at Malaysia, the Chinese always have the highest grade. Look at Singapore Chinese. The opportunity now in china is wide open for the brilliants of Chinese to shine now!
@Yen River, smartness has nothing to do with it. The Chinese culture induces, through the traditional family education (Kar Kau) concept, hard work to the children. Nothing can be achieved without hard work irrespective how smart one is.
Yen River, you are darned right. As I have mentioned elsewhere on this forum, Chinese are already smart, no way they can be smarter than they are. Not only in Malaysia but also in the land of the brave and the smart, the great US of A. There are more PhD students in the Universities there and ar the secondary level, Chinese students shine in Maths and Science. And even in English - would you believe it? Yours truly always got A plus or plus plus and the Prof said "this guy writes a alot better than you native American speakers." Americans do not speak the Queen's English, but the President's American.
What can I say, you did an excellent job, you hit it out of the park. Brilliant, absolutely honest and realistic description of what is currently going on in China and the west. Best of all you articulated in a clear simple manner. Top marks.
Hi. I found you via Gweilo60. I usually watch on smart tv so can’t see comments or comment myself Have had to use phone to make this comment. V difficult due to my disabilities. I was university lecturer before becoming disabled. I saw how hard working my Chinese students were and I started learning Chinese so I could be more welcoming to them Then my illness. Physical and cognitive. I can’t do much of anything anymore. Need carers. But I still help Chinese people practice their English online. I’ve even met a few in person. Their modesty, drive, ability, kindness, make an amazing combination I still continue to try to learn Chinese but my memory snd concentration problems along with frequent illness make this an arduous task. What others manage to learn in a year takes me about ten years even though I persevere and use all my efforts to do this. It helps me “escape” from my bed and gives me something to strive towards I see you use Chinese subtitles and I’m very keen to read these along with the spoken English. I understand most of the vocabulary. Are you bilingual? Are you HSK 6 Level and beyond? I’m teaching myself HSK 5 right now but my brain is not working too well at the moment. It’s wonderful when my brain works better for a while. I had about three months in 2018 when my brain worked a bit better and I made progress. Do you write your subtitles yourself? Thanks for connecting me to China. I’m English, too
Thank you so much for sharing your story, Actually my Chinese is not so good, we had someone do the subtitles for us. I'm not good at learning languages but my son is doing well with it.
Thank you so much for sharing your view and experience, this is very kind and inspiring. I've been studying many years in Europe and I knew how grateful and lucky it feels like when you have Professors, lecturers or classmates who have the kind of open and unbiased mindset as you showed. Of course China isn't perfect, but it definitely needs to be understood and discussed based on facts and reasonable judgements. Your kindness and open-mindedness would have great impact on the students you encountered, both Chinese and Non-Chinese. Hope you get better and would love to help if you want to practice Chinese!
I was educated in UK and spent few years working there. I totally agree with you. I found a very interesting thing when I was a part time lecture in one of the top University in UK. There are so few white British engineering students in the class. Majority are Chinese or Asian students. The top students always Chinese. that was in 2005.
Some Chinese are worrying about the abroad students may not come back in the future, because thay've seen someone who abandon their motherland and keep insulting it in the Internet. It really hurt the native Chinese's hearts.

Source: _Wikipedia: List of countries by research and development spending_ In the West, researchers often have to worry about funding, so they write papers and cite other peoples work to improve their credibility, so that they can expand their academic circles, get approval of grants so that they can publish more papers. It has degenerated into an academic system and many researcher's ideas remain on paper, instead of being turned into actual products. Whereas in China, research funds are available at all tiers of society, from corporate to government sector, and a struggling research can easily get a $40,000 funding approval, thus freeing the researcher to concentrate on his/her research instead of having to worry about funding. The idea-to-product transition time in China is short too, so many researchers can feel a sense of satisfaction, witnessing their ideas being turned to actual products. Thank you Lee and Oli for sharing your thoughts about China. I truly appreciate your work. I'd like to add that some Chinese inventions that we use today are compass, paper, printing, toothbrush, gunpowder, umbrella, wheelbarrow, silk, multi-stage rockets, etc. The Chinese have never said that other nations have stolen their (Chinese) technology. We should strive to make the world a better place by sharing and spreading knowledge.
I'm Chinese but wasn't born in China but the other "Free" China, had been fearing, hating Communist but always love China, because of all the propaganda's we all do . And I and my family, as well as most friends, have completely turned around over the last two decades seeing what modern China has done, reigniting the hope of rebuilding China and seeing it become a reality in my lifetime is wonderful, as it was but a pipe dream before. China is doing a lot of things right as with China in the past 200 years doing almost all wrongs, the people are the same, but the government has been pragmatic in developing, planning, organizing and even go as far as changing the cultures, coupled with the underlying, hardworking, sharing, family oriented nature of the people, and shall I say much wisdom from the history, a new nation is reborn! China couldn't have risen up with learning from other countries(that opportunities exist for all other less developed countries too, and let's not use the stolen smear), but China only did after she had fallen to ashes after losing all its pride and confidence. There are many qualities that other countries could learn and adopt from China, and a few wise people would see that, but human nature dictates that majority would be in denials, or worse, and never come to terms until its too late! It's a long process and takes centuries to evolve, but we are just witnessing the change of powers! The Western people are repeating the same mistake the Chinese did in the past as history repeats itself!
@Phoenix you clearly don't understand China. No one cares or talks about communism in China any more. Freedom of thinking in the west? How about the thought policing sprawling across those so called freeland nowadays.
I remember being at Trinity College Dublin in 1979 and we had Masters students from China,we undergrads in Maths were in awe of them. They also taught us a valuable lesson of hard work and more hard work. I think they were shocked at our poverty a well .
Poverty, is not an enemy or something to look down upon. That’s what was taught by the Communist government. They believed that everyone should be a peasant to understand the labor and hard work that goes into it. Everyday trials and tribulations. The difference is the bourgeoisie who looked down on someone because they are poor, but don’t realize they would easily become poor without their riches they are born into and without a work ethic.
I'm a HK Chinese and lived in the UK for an extensive amount of time. I'm so glad people like you are sharing a far more balanced story that the mainstream media is portraying. Keep up the good work and would be great if I could meet you in person next time I'm in SZ. Best of luck and Cheerio!
Thank you for your positive comments about Chinese education. I, as an educator, know that we are not perfect, and still need to stay humble and learn from the western world, but still, we keep our own way of learning and developing. Being consciously and rationally in this massive world will help us to gain real respect from the western world. I hope we are doing that. Time will prove it!
I am a Chinses living in NZ, experienced racism at work and personal life. It is hard sometimes to defend your own country to use your second language, it made me felt very lonely. Nice to see the positive video towards my homeland, Thank you.
If the Americans know their history, they would be aware they 'stole' the mechanisation of cotton weaving from England in the 19th Century, something the English tried so hard to prevent so much so that they did not allow their technicians in those days to travel abroad least they take the technology with them. A smart Yankee actually visited several of the spinning establishments in Lancashire and memorised the concept and implemented it in America.
@Dust , I am not sure if you heard the whole video above. One of the points raised was the misconception that Chinese stole Western technology when, in fact, the technology transfer was one of the terms agreed in allowing foreign companies to invest in China. Being cheeky, I was merely reminding any American readers what happened in the 19th C when there was an actual theft of technology from England.
@@pplla7821 , you may have heard of the term 'standing on the shoulders of giants'. We all start from where others left off. Otherwise, we must all start by reinventing the wheel first.
America did not steal Brit technology. They were inspired by the Lancashire looms and by trial and errors, they achieve in days when took the Brits years to put together. America, the land of the free and the smart.
Thank you for sharing what you saw and experienced in China. Various voices and options about China should be heard on the world’ stage. Starting from there, individuals can do their own thinking, research or even come to China to explore. Don’t let biase media fool you.
Thank you for your fair comments on this topic,Barrett.I would like to share just one factor that may also help contributing the development of China is that the well educated elites not only abandoned lots of opportunities abroad and came back to China, but also they shared and applied what they learnt, leading more industries and companies to grow up rapidly.Respect them all.And also Xiaoping Deng in 1985 said that ‘let some people get rich first’.Guess it’s not only about the fortune but also about enrichment of education, leadership and spirit. I’m glad to see my own country developing like this, fast, with the efforts of all the people who dedicate themselves to their careers. That can be great sacrifices of entertainment, youth or even love ones, but we are still on the way thriving.最美中国红🇨🇳
Awesome Barrett. I really appreciate your honesty about these China related issues. Prior to my first visit to China in 2015, I was told by my close American friends on how evil China was, and how arrogant the Chinese people were. My experience has been exactly the opposite. I resonate with your videos very well, and agree with you that all this bias against China from western media and governments is because of the geo-political shift of power towards China, both technological and political. Keep on going. And next time I am in China, I promise to reach out and buy you a coffee :-)
Just more comments on this. I am a Chinese who lives in the west in the pasts five years. I met so many westerners showing so less knowledge and some biased understanding about China. I would say the mass meida should take the main resposibility. For this, I am so worried about the west as the current good living condition in the west is due to the comparative advantages over other countries. The relative decline of the west is for sure difficult for them to maintain the current living standards. In a word, the decline of the west in the future comes from their ignorance of the most dynamic power on the earth today. It is really high time for the west to get more objective knowledge about China and learn from the advantanges China owns nowaday.
Something like me when I come to China 1990. And some else I like to add in. 1989 Aug 26 is the first time I step foot into Cuba. I hear so many bad thing about Communist Country IS! But everything is difference from the news (U.S.)

Hard work and discipline have been paving chinese out of the poverty line and gradually into new China and the second largest economy in the world. It wasn't easy to encounter the enviromental control together with the massive labour force at the production line. Though there is a price to pay for the enviroment , the chinese are trying putting up a solution. Not 100% but workable solution in time to come. As a manfacturing factory in the world , china and the chinese are going in perfect harmony after the coronovirus crises , to make the world a better world for years to come.
"Hard work and discipline have been paving chinese out of the poverty line and gradually into new China and the second largest economy in the world. " Or that their government abandoned failed ideas (social communism) and adopted ones that work (capitalism). So once the government stopped holding people down, they were able to rise up. "It wasn't easy to encounter the enviromental control" And they are still failing hard. "going in perfect harmony after the coronovirus crises" Always perfect harmony, no matter the cost (which is actually not a natural harmony, but a forced one, even faked) "to make the world a better world for years to come." Is that how you see the export of the social credit system?
@@nagueryamjadlip5667 Oh man. The heavy-handed way it tries to deal with problems. It's the government getting directly involved with people's lives. If someone spits on the sidewalk, the people around them should voice that that behavior is unacceptable. Not the government restricting where that person can travel, or their ability to buy a house. It's great way to further limit freedom of speech (or attempts and trying to achieve some level of it). The Chinese government monitors and censors all online interactions. If you say something they don't like, heavy punishments can be put upon you. It can introduce more corruption into an already corrupt system. A person whose job it is to walk around a neighborhood, taking notes, and reporting those things to the government (which is the sole decider in what is deemed acceptable and unacceptable behavior) can be bribed (as many already are in China) to either report something, or to ignore something, enriching that person's life. So, what do you think is good about the Social Credit System the Chinese Communist Party is so proud of? (face recognition is now also a thing to be required for having internet access. so if the government doesn't like what you say online, they can prevent you from even having internet access)

The "stealing" happened in the 1980s... Cos that first wave of companies that entered China... Their technologies were not meant to be copied or shared or spread across the country. Why do you think that people like Li Ka Shing addressed issues subsequently ??? I think you need to check... to see what went on.
