China happens to have the MOST sea freight navigating through the South China Sea among all the various nations in the area and has the MOST to protect in is trade routes. So, the U.S. is trying to protect the South China Sea trade routes for China against China? an oxymoron if there isn't one but the U.s. has always a way to contradict itself and tie itself into a pretzel against logic and common sense.
